Exclamation FORD wont touch thier own gas system on a VCT??

My car was an auto with Factory tickford gas installed and after a few problems here and there (not with the gas just everything else) Ive got it in the workshop for an upgrade to the VCT engine from an xr6 and a Manual conversion. being the bigger engine and manual (vs auto) the computer is being swapped over to the vct one but the mechanic said that the new computer wont work with the factory gas and I gotta get ford to program it back in before I can run it on gas again.

Rang ford and thier absoluteley useless, offered no help and said that they wont touch it because the car is 'modified'! its using all factory parts and the factory gas was already fitted it just needs to be conected back up to the new engine and computer. to get me off the phone they told me $4000 which is ridiculouse for what im sure must be a 1/2 job tops plus a gas tune.

Any suggestions on where to go in SA that wont pull my pants down over the price?? i was expecting a $50-$100 on a 5minut job

thats exactly what was said to them, Im positive thier pricing was due to the fact that they didnt want to help as the car was "modified or ""Not Genuine" (in thier words). the bloke putting the engine in said it should cost about $50-$100 tops but as its factory gas it can only be done by ford.
I spoke to 6 different people from ford in different departments and dealerships but all I got out of all of them was 5 "we cant/Not Interested"'s and 1 "cant/Not Interested......ok then, $4000"!

i would maybe suggest take it to a place that does gas conversions , that quote you got was rediculous , you can actually get a complete brand new gas system installed for around $4000 to $4500 ! .

Talking Factory Gas!

If it's factory gas, have you tried to give it a ECU reset? That may help!

Cheers

Simon :hihi:

The ECU reset instructions are at www.aufalcon.com.au

the vct can be disconnected , so i cant see why a tune for gas for it wouldn't be possible , even with it still connected - or disconnect it and run a hp chip maybe if possible , sorta defys the point of the vct , but hey - whatever works ??

yea, unfortunateley theres no point resetting the ecu coz its the new comp from the vct which didnt have gas.

does anyone know if theres anything that can be done to my original comp to make it work like the vct one with the new motor which still gives me the factory gas settings (keeping in mind the original comp is auto and now the car is manual)

So, replace the ECU with a normal VCT ECU and then get a gas piggyback ECU fitted.... shouldn't be a prob.... just don't get ford to do it - they are hopeless...

thats another idea ... or it makes me wonder too - if when getting a performance edit if it is possible for the person doing the edit to add the extra gas settings too , if it is possible you'de probably be able to get the edit + the gas settings added for around the same price as just getting the gas settings added with a piggyback from a gas shop ?? im not sure if its possible , might be worth asking about ??

thew factory LPg has an extra pin on the ECU.. the VCT ECU simply wont have the pin , so piggyback chips and edits are out :(

Chaser is on the money, get an aftermarket LPG computer and run that with the VCT ECU

Why not buy an edit and get one of these tuners to do it for you. Could be beneficial

It has been said but the vct computor will not be able to run the lpg section at all.

You will need to have the lpg system reworked with and different system but i think the only system that will siut the factory system is the vaillie after market system from boral.

And to that point the gas computor standard in the car will not operate the vct section.

Sounds like a lot off hassle for the little power gain in the vct engine.

Edit will not work if the computer does not have the hardware biult in to drive the gas or vct.

Would have been cheaper to get an injected LPG system plumbed in and installed ... better power and economy than the old style carby setup than the Ford LPG Tickford system.

If the LPG ECU has an extra pin it is obviously a little different so why not tackle it from the other end and use the old ECU and get the capa edit and custom tune to get what you can from vct maybe thats possible.

Yea thats the sort of thing I was thinking of. I have absoluteley no Idea what goes on as far as the computer systems go (Im a carby bloke).
Problem being the original computer is Auto and the car has just been converted to manual.

the old computer is.....
-stock forte
-tickford factory gas
-4 spd AUTO

wheras the now computer is
-VCT
-No Gas
-5Spd Manual

obviously if using my old computer something needs to be done to get it to operate like the VCT to match the bigger engine, and then something else to get it to handle the manual gearbox.
I dont even know if this is possible but if it is, what should I expect to pay???
alternativeley, can a combo of both computers be used somehow???? I had no idea this was going to be such a complex task just to reconnect the gas!!!

Do you have any issues with the traction control? I test drove a Ghia late last year on gas, the tc light was always on, until you switched from gas to petrol of course!

I enquired also about a gas conversion for a car a while ago, and the guy said most people with traction control have this issue, another cpu is installed and the traction control is then ok.

With a normal gas system you cant have traction control on, as I beleive it cant effectively cut the fuel like an injector, you get a buildup in the exhaust when the traction control cuts the spark and when it fires again your in trouble, my light stays on all the time when its running on gas, think the only way around it is injected gas.
