Spot on - currently 4 times higher than China. Altho China is tipped to surpass the US's oil thirst within 20 years and I doubt India is far behind them. Oh that's right - the world cant actually supply that many barrels per day! Fun times ahead

So you guys are telling me the market just dropped out from underneath my purebread virgin camel production facility? Damn!

It is possible to build a car that cheap for that market. Even with OHC, Injection, and electric spark and a ECU. You just have to cut a lot of corners and have a very forgiving market.

You can buy a car here in australia for about $10k, with dual airbags, 5 speed, 3 or 4 cylinder, vented discs, 2 or 3 star safety, etc. And in japan the Kai class shows you can do it cheaper than that still making them in japan.

1 or 2 cylinder motor. 4 speed transmission (or lawn mower style CVT/6 speed). Plastic all outer panels, monocoque structure. no frills.

Very good point. When I went to see the Taj Mahal, there is a viewing point where you can see it from maybe 10 kms away. Well, you're SUPPOSED to see it. Could JUST pick it out between all of the smog.

India is one polluted place, and having cheap cars available which meet a certain emissions standard is sure to improve things.

I might start up a cold sell phone facility here to ring India and offer good deals on the new TATA car?

LOL. So true!

I'd have to be a bit worried about a new $2500 car. If you hit a bird, the car would probably be a writeoff!

When all's said and done I still doubt whether your average villager in India will have approx 60,000 rupees to splurge on a fantastic/plastic Tata stuck together with glue. When I was there the Ambassador (Mk 2 Morris Oxford derivative) was still the people's car. Most the cab versions running diesel. A good solid car still being built/recycled.
