If they drink red wine go to a decent bottle shop and ask them for a bottle that will mature when they have been engaged/married for 10 years if you know date and put a label on the bottle to state this information for them. Something different and doesn't necessarily cost a fortune.

I love the wine idea!

One of the gifts we got for our engagement were towels... with our names embroidered on them.
We use them all the time!

Go to greater union @ marion & get them a voucher for gold class cinema. Its pretty good. Will set you back $60 for movie only or slightly more with a meal/bar voucher.
That sort of money (and less) cold get you a half decent bottle of wine if they are in fact drinkers. (i'm sure there's some wine fans that will disagree on the $$ figure for a good "drop" though) :P

yes they'll love gold class, thats a great gift idea!

try not to get them "household items" like blenders and stuff....... they're the type of things they get as wedding gifts.....!

The movie tickets sounds good, so does the wine. If they go to see The da Vinci code you may need to instruct them to drink the wine first.

I went to a wedding for two people I couldn't stand, so I bought them a toaster............ a cheap one. Gotta love Linda toasters for $17.95.

i did this for some friends but got the bottle engraved. looked fantastic.

if your going to do this make sure you get a bottle with the seam/join on the back, found out the hard way they cant engrave over it

You could do something like i did for my mate.
I got him a Bottle of Jameson Whiskey, that was made on his exact Birthday in 1983. So it was 21 years old exactly.
Could do the same, but for when they first met, etc (if you know)

Every couple who get engaged get a stainless steel toaster. I go to Mr Minute and have "John & Jean - A toast to your engagement" (Obviously names changed as required).

Takes the thought out of buying a present, but still a thoughtful gift. Just got to make sure the toaster is actually stainless and not just a coating before the engraving starts!

For our engagement we got icecream makers (yes two!), a blender (already had one), a lovely vase (classy glass number), some other things (cheque from the parents) but the only things that got any real use was the gift vouchers. 1 was a coles myer (great to use at any coles myer store), and the other was a David Jones gift voucher. Most useful presents apart from the cheque from the parents which goes towards the wedding.

Very much depends on what you want to spend and their tastes.

If they are getting or have a new house and not much furniture, a voucher for Freedom or Harvey Norman something might be good.

The wine idea is a really good one, but the danger with that is that anything less than about $60 or so is just going to be nice table wine, not a real long term gift...

The towels are a great idea too, as everyone uses towels and it doesnt matter how many you have. Catch with that are that they are pretty expensive - we bought a set of two bath towels, matching bath mat and flannels recently and they were nearly $150.

Vases, dinner platters and things like that are also good, if they are decent ones.

Good luck mate, hope the party goes well!

when we got enganged, we made a list of what we did have and gave it to our parents to let people know, was easier then asking for stuff. When we got married we did a register.
