Securing my car.

Hey guys, got quite a sum of money for my 18th and decided that instead of spending it all on performance/visual mods towards my XF van, to instead get a good security system first, then go from there.

So, just looking for advice on what I should go with and where to get it done etc.

I'd like the back barn doors to be as secure as possible without putting a latch/padlock on the back, and seens that XF's are incredibly easy to break into, want some tips of stopping crooks getting into the front doors as well (if anything apart from alarm etc).

Looking for sensors (back doors, bonnet, doors, smashed glass, tilt/movement etc)/3 point immobilsor if possible/alarm etc and anything else to stop people getting in.

I gig regularly, and would be parking in some shady places.. Plus having gear of around $10k + in the back, I really don't want it going anywhere.

Best kits/places etc to do it in Melb? I would like to spend around $500 at most.. BUT if there's a kit, or extra things worth doing, I would spend upwards of around $800. That's about half of the money I got, but I still want some for tinting/lowering/exhaust/slight engine mods and some music gear.

Anyway quality black wire alarm, fit two internal screamers.
Never leave anything on show.
Hide as much as possiblr in side panels.

Hmm, would it be good to have something as a deterent though? Even flashing light in the dash or something?

A shotgun and a carton of shell's is only about $15o, mightn't stop the first guy from teying but rest assured there wont be a seccond.

Red light will deter 'smash and grab'

Good immobiliser will stop the car going. Screamers will stop all.

Alarms are very cheap!

^How much do you think i'd be looking at for 3 point immobiliser, black wire alarm/screamer (maybe 2?) and the sensors?
I'd like something that locks automatically, as one thing i've found since getting my licence is i've allways got that voice inside my head saying 'what if it didn't lock?' when in shopping centres/movies at night etc. Maybe even pager alert cos i'll spend a lot of time away from it at nights..

I have sold alarms for about 12 years, , and the best advice I can give you is this.

No matter how good the alarm is, , It depends on the installer...

I have seen the best alarms give their owners lifelong headaches cause the alarm was installed by someone who only has done a few.

Find someone who has fitted HEAPS of the same brand, and get that one !

Maybe look for a Python or a Viper.

Look for at least 2 stage immobiliser, and a dual stage shock sensor.

Get the battery backup siren hidden so it cant be smashed with a hammer !

Central locking should cost about $150 extra at the time.

The system should be set to auto arm, , but NOT auto lock, , as one day you will lock yourself out ! ( I had a guy do this at a servo )

maybe also think about putting a second siren in the cab ! ( this works a treat, , as they cant steal the stereo with both hands over their ears ! )

But most important, , make sure whoever fits it has done heaps ( and they solder everything )

as AC/DC says, choose your fitter carefully,talk to the guy thats gonna fit it,let him know you want a real good job,remember alot of fitters work on contract basis,so the faster its done the more money they make,just lake it clear its your pride and joy.2 point immobilisation is fine if fitted properly.we never fit 3 point even on 'target' cars.have heard some insurance companies require it though? not a fan of shock sensors, because i'm not a fan of false alarming from trucks,loud exhausts etc,they're a little old fashioned these days but yes a dual stage can be set to 'chirp' at light touches and trigger alarm when hit hard, although i've seen drunks 'tease' (i live in northbrige WA,plenty of drunks round here) the pre alert by hitting the car,
i use and prefer dynamce products,all black wire,insurance approved, (WA) govt approved (WA has the toughest regulations) laser line are good if not getting a little dated but too expensive
get a glass break sensor,a tilt if you have good wheels, and maybe ultrasonic movement sensors facing into the back if you have side windows that could be an entry point, but if you dont a pin switch on the rear doors will set it off.i dont like to 'over protect' a vehicle as you'll just get false triggers.
check out dynamcos new shock/tilt if you are after a tilt sensor.

oh and get a very prominent (blue is very bright) window mounted LED as a deterant

A few years ago I heard of someone that fitted a distress flare inside his 'old' GT (no, I dont know what model).

Over the years I heard it was stolen about 3 times but only got as far as the end of the street... kinda hard to see through the orange smoke.

Cost him 3 sets of carpet though

Mate of mine is a muso too (lead gtr in one of my bands) had a honda Prelude , never got broken into , he always had "monty" in the car "6ft Diamond Python" he saw a couple of guys look "till monty raised his head" (hehe) only problem it's only a warm weather deterent ....

if i have my guitar and gear in my car i dont park it. i drive to the destination, unload. do my thing. reload, drive home. or somewhere else i know is secure. mates house etc. never leave it in my car. ever.

this wont help with "your gear", but i think a good quality club lock works...
Noone seems to go the club lock anymore...not sure why.

They have gone out of fashion because there has been some research that has proven that they often arent all that effective.

If someone wants your car, and especially at night where they have time all they have to do is simply saw through the hollow plastic steering wheel.

This may be solved by a good quality metal racing wheel though....

These are way to easy to get past. All they do is get in your way.

Get a quality alarm or leave keys in ignition!
