I've had a private home phone number since I was 18 so the first question I always ask is "where did you get my number from?" If they say "the phone book" I call them a liar and get stuck into them.. most of them hang up on me.

Just for those who think they are wasting the companys money cause they are making them use a heap of call time from india.

I will introduce you to the concept of VOIP :p

Basically, all theses calls from india go through the internet before they get to you, basically they make a call from india for a local call cost

Being someone who works from home these people annoy me no end, so i just end up playing games with them. Untill there is a registery that is legally binding for all telemarketing companies we cant win :(

I just never answer my phone, people get anoyed with that though :P

Never had a problem at home, luckily, but at work we turn it into a bit of a joke.

A bit childish, but on the rare occasion that I do answer phones at work and get one of these clowns (most of them seem to Irish sounding strangely enough), screaming down the phone line Anne from Little Britain's famous quote seems to get them off my back.

"EH EH EHHHHHHH"

I had someone wanting me to join up to AMEX once on the phone. He craped on about how good it was etc. How I would get bonus points, great rates, great deals... etc. etc. Then he goes would you like to sign up?

My reply was "Yes I would. I applied 3 months ago and you guys rejected me because I was a uni student who didnt make enough money." hehe.

I registered at this site months ago but it doesn't stop the Injuns as they're not registered with ADMA.

I just do as some others have suggested.
I tell them I have to do something and will be back in a minute, then just leave them hanging there.

Don't think it'd work mate, call centers have these glorious devices that take out loud noises and level them to a good volume, always felt weird when I was working at a call center (receiving complaints, not making them) when people were yelling, it still sounded like they were speaking normally.

I've found its not just call centers that are getting ridiculous. I've rang a few places down south recently, and I keep on getting Chinese people that can't understand a thing I'm saying. It's getting extremely frustrating, when I call people- they answer the phone, and they can't speak enough english to talk. If thats the case they shouldn't even answer the phone.

Silent number helps a little but they still end up finding your number.

They used to call my mum's house on average 5 times a day during the week. It was like talking to a computer, almost as if they had automated replies to certain words, was always an indian male though.

Lately they have even been doing door to door sales for Electricity or for Optus etc with very pushy sales tactics, even though you might already have that service they try to make you spend more more and more, lucky I was in the shed with an array of tools but the bloke left after some careful wording.

Pain!

I'm starting to feel left out here. Only had 2 Telemarketing calls in the last 5 or so years, maybe a silent number is worth the extra Telstra charges
This only works if you happen to get a silent number that hasnt ever been used before. Otherwise you will get someone elses old number that used to be called and still is from time to time.

I use the Monty Python method.

Put on an outrageous french accent and say...

"..No Tanks I already got whaaan....." and hang up.

Probably confuses the hell out out of them, but makes me laugh.

Pretty safe there then, had the same number for the last 11 years. Of course even my silent number wont work if the computer uses random dialing :(

My 3 yo daughter loves to talk on the phone, when they call I put her on. If they weren't aware of the wiggles & the 'nanies in India, they would be now.
