When my car was new i remember it being super torquey :P

Well maybe thats because i had stepped up to a Fiesta from a Mirage (which was an unbelievably good car !!!)

So yeah felt super torquey, but the engine felt really tight, give it 10 thousand kms and it will feel COMPLETELY different, it will loosen up a bit and become a better drive.
