Sara Groen takes to the road in a new twist on a retro classic - the Ford GTX1. The 618 horsepower :eclipsee_ 5.4 litre supercharged V8 convertible is the masterpiece of designer Kip Ewing who made it his mission to reinvent one of the classic racing cars of the 1960’s – the four times Le Mans winning Ford GT40. Now roadster enthusiasts can have a 21st Century road-going super-car. |

As much as we Ford freaks love the GT, that wasn't worthy of being shown on a show supposedly showing us new and innovative ideas for the future. Lately, it has become a mouthpiece for whoever wants to pay for airtime.

Ford GT40 (150k US base model at the time)vs Ferrari Modena 360 race spec(200k US at the time) vs Porshe 911 GT3 also race spec(100k US at the time).
Both the Ferrari and the porshe got the same lap times around the test track ~ 1 min from memory (same driver) the GT40 went 2 seconds quicker, which is a huge difference. This thing will eat either of the other two cars easily, and the other two are benchmarks for GT racing around the world. It is relatively cheap too. |

While I agree with a post above about it not being in theme with the show....I don't care. I love the sound of that car.

The gt40 is one car I would love to own. Seen one in the flesh and damn it looks hot. Ford aus should bring a limited number of right hand drive versions im sure they would fly out.

In current motor magazine, they tested the GT40 (not'x') again the Saleen S7. The saleen has an extra 142kw, nearly 300nM extra torque and 240kg's less body weight. But, Still struggled to keep with the GT40. The saleen's donk is quite ancient with its 7.0L V8, 16v, TT. vs The Fords QOHC 5.4L 32v S/C V8. Just goes to show, Power is NOT everything. Drivability contributes massively to a car performance. Not to mention prices ($188,000(GT40) vs $555,000(S7)
"Both forged alloy throttle pedals clack to their stops, There is a gigantic roar from behind as the twin turbo's try to spool up. This saleen is one of the loudest cars i have ever driven. The GT40 immediately jumps almost a car length infront, but thats OK, we're expecting this - Its supercharger comes on boost instantly, while my Garrett GT35R Turbo-chargers take a moment to pump. Now the GT40 is a good car length infront and my turbo's come on song, but the GT40 is holding its lead - Jesus, Its not enough, no way! I don't make up much ground and by the time we're doing well above the lock-up-and-see-you-in-a-year speeds, I back off, beaten" - Motor magazine, July 2006 (page 77) |
