Default lowering quote

hey guys
i recently got a quote from a local suspension specialist (not a brand name outlet like pedders etc)
and the owner/operator drives an AU falcon IRS(bonus!)

to get my car AT lowest legal 100mm it will cost $1500->$2000
with new short struts and camber kit and full realignment in camber castor and toe front and rear

with the front wheels being moved back slightly to keep the rims in the center of the guard. he said somthing about upon turning and hitting a bump they have a tendency to jump up and kiss the guard as the wheel is very FORWARD in the arch.

my brother reccomended him as his boss has been using the guy for years (he is a mechanic and engineer etc)

does 1500->2000 sound like a good price for all that
thanks guys

When you work out what all the parts are worth , your paying alot for labour (allthough alot of it is labour) ! . Im reluctant to say if this is a good price or not , as i haven't had a quote for lowering an AU / with irs , but it seems like alot to me just for lowering ? , have you had any other quotes ?

What brands are being used? Find out the cost of the components & then you will be able to work out labour costs.

Getting the short shocks/struts is the hard part ... and usually costs the extra as well.
By the sounds of it the adjustable caster kit is in there as this allows the wheels to be moved further back in the guards ... and also promotes crisper turn-in as well.

If it is everything included ... like sway bars, new bushes, (camber/caster ... which is looks like) ... and labour with decent components ... it does work out about the right price.

Look at the Whiteline Full Works kit for most cars ... and the full kits come to approx $2000 including labour.

Sounds like you are going to do it the proper way .. and getting it all fitted and aligned together. It is worth doing it all in one go. You will be impressed when you drive out with it all fitted. It's a massive difference compared to just lowering a vehicle with springs.

Did you get the rear-end sorted out on the Fairlane ... I remember you were having alinment issues.

Assuming they are using Koni or bilstein or similar shocks, then the price is OK. You could get a full set of King coilover adjustable height setup for that money though (if they still make it).

I recon that is quiet pricey But I guess its because you want to go so low.
And lots of work has been mentioned.
Its probably good for what it is.

But

Dad has an AU XR8 and was quoted alot less than that by Pedders. But again just a normal lower not a drop on ya guts.

I have lowered Many of my own cars and friends using pedders parts over the years and I think the Most it has ever cost was $750.

In most cases all that was required were new coil springs and a castor camber kit. I think In only 1 or 2 cases Shortened shocks were required. And My 2 utes had to have the rear leafs re-set which was dearer than coils.

Cheers..........Kev

When mine was lowered it cost 800 inc labour. It was for munroe gt shocks all round and king super lows and full alighnment. They said it didnt need a caster camber kit and since getting it done approx 20,000 kays ago the tyres have worn even all round. That is also towing for those kays. Sounds expensive and for that i'd want new sway bars and full bushes front and back.

Super lows
1x King Front Springs - $140
1x King Rear Springs - $150
2x Strut - GT Gas Reflex - $199 x 2 = $238
1 Shock Set GT Gas Reflex - $177.95
3hrs of Labour - $210

All up.. $855.95 + GST = $941.55

If blackers10 has the IRS the rear struts & springs are much dearer than the watts link rear shockers & springs. For memory when I lowered the AU ghia
I paid about $340 for the KingS/L springs & $395 for the pedders IRS super sports P/N9834 struts I left the stock front struts plus $50 for the IRS camber kit as only the XRs have them fitted & shimmed the front which I never had a problem with prem tyre wear & alignment $70.
So a all up cost of $855 & I did the labour so his quote would be close to the mark if he has IRS & changes all struts, springs camber kit & does not get a discount on parts.

3 hrs is about right. If I do it without stopping, between 80 and 100 minutes is about right for all 4 on the IRS setup. Then there would be wheel alignment time, etc. So 3 hrs is not excessive - a bit much, but if they charge per hour or part thereof, then 3 is in the ballpark.

If you want to compare prices, you need to know what parts they are using. Pedders shocks are similar to Monroe GT Gas Reflex. Jax probably use Gabriel or something. Make sure you compare similar items, as the cheapest job may end up costing you more.

If anyone is after King SuperLows for an IRS rear end (KFRL67SL), PM me. I have a set for sale, $90 including freight anywhere in Australia. If you're in Canberra, price is the same, just less loss to me. They were in caspers car for a few thousand kms, and in mine for the same, so are nearly new.

ok went in the other day and sussed this out

the guy knows his stuff (owns an AU and its lowered and is an older guy and bob jane sends all the too hard basket jobs to him)

he wants about $2600 for:-
springs
short shocks (multible brands ie KYB ..pedders..monroe.. no bilstein or konis tho etc)
full alignment that takes 2 hours to do (his works out castor and camber where as bob jane elcheapo doesnt)
camber kit
special extended bump stops to keep the tyres off the guards if you hit a bump mid corner etc also allows load carrying in the rear without scrapin the diff on the ground (his AU has this item and he swears by it)
replace bushes upper and lower on the rear outter control arms

does this sound right to you guys for the price?
i personally think its rather $$
but for 4x short shocks AND what ever springs to bring me to 100mm clearance off the road .. it sounds ABOUT right?

i posted another thread about how to replace the bushes my self if its possible(need pressing out im told?)

thanks guys
