A quick question - if I am re-building the RS2000 2L for big horsepower - think wild on boost but not stupid horsepower hero style - how well will the 4 speed manual stand up (if at all?).
Have plenty of experience and technical help with the engine and boost part, but I have no experience with the RS2000 gearbox, and while it's been great for the standard output, I get the feeling it won't last 5 seconds when the engine goes back in, same with the std diff. Any experience would be appreciated. Tim |

You are right tim. The standard gearbox is good for only a bit more than standard probably up to 170HP and definatly wont handle the torque of a turbo motor for very long. The diff centre is about the same and it seems axles arent a whole lot better, you can get a Quaife centre and axles which are much stronger but i think in your case a complete different stronger diff would be more suitable.

original 4 speeds are tough as nails but if you dont like the massive jump from 1st to 2nd, want a bit better economy and better pick up go a sierra 5 speed, stronger and much better than the standard 3.56:1/1.97:1/1.37:1/1.00:1 ratios...

What about the old straight cut gear set, refered to as a "rocket" box??
I thought that was a bit stronger than the standard cluster. Bit pricey though.

Yeah the Rocket is much stronger but as you say it is fairly pricey... There is also gear kits available from Quaife in various ratios ,straight cut or helical cut, normal, dog or sequential shift too.. but they are also fairly pricey

Sounds like it's going to be expensive what ever option is taken...
Tranny tunnel mods could be on the cards... Does the supra box fit or are lots of mods required to fit that?

A mate used the supra box on his mk1 esky turbo car. Unfortunately, it was originally an auto so I don't know how difficult it would be to fit a manual tranny tunnel.

The original four speed will handle about 50% more torque easy. There is no real benefit to the Sierra box as far as ratios are concerned. I had a steel case Celica box in mine and now have the alloy Supra box. Much better ratios in the Toy boxes and very strong in the Escort even with a turbo. There is no problem fitting them up. You need a new crossmember which I made myself. Jeff Dellow Automotive in Sydney have full conversion kits including clutch plate, speedo cable, yoke etc etc.
