Default Lotus 907 engine into Mk I Escort

Does anybody here know if there is much external difference (engine mounts, block size, etc) between the Lotus Twin Cam 1600's as used in the Escort Twin Cam (and the Lotus Cortina before that) and the 1973cc Lotus 907 twin cam engine as used in the Jensen Healey, and if it would be possible to shoehorn one into the engine bay of a 1973 Escort XL 1300? Or are they too different to the 1600 Lotus Twin Cam to fit into a Mk I Escort and we'd be better off sourcing a 2L OHC 'Pinto'?

I'm asking because (as some of you may know) we might be able to get our hands on a Lotus engine that came out of a Jensen Healey, and the 1300cc that is under the hood isn't exactly the fastest thing around. But the idea of a stock-looking Mk I Escort, complete with 1300 badges on it, packing a 144bhp Lotus engine, appeals for some reason... :

They are a completely different engine (as you know) they are based on a Vauxhall engine. No idea whether it would fit in an Esky though! I dare say they would be better than the Pinto (although certainly not for parts pricing/availability), but better again would be a Zetec/Jap engine.

Guys you are killing my dream here, guess I better get back to dads, have another look at the engine and gear box and do some measuring up. :

Gary's car seems to run ok on a Zetec motor. :hihi:

Oh well if it doesn't fit, looks like I'll be going the supercharged 2.0 Pinto, at least I'll be keeping it mainly old school apart from having it supercharged. Or I may start looking for a Sierra Cosworth engine. _2:

yeah id go for a forced pinto :P be prolly cheaper than a zetec or jap conversion.

well thats what im doing anyways :P

But I really want the LOTUS!! *throws hissy fit* :P

I wouldn't put a zetec in it, I want to keep it old school.

The Sierra Cosworth engine (yes I know it's fuel injected) would get up and boogie I think. ;)

I'll probably end up going the way of the old Pinto and their oil leaks though.

Oh it's gonna be funny to see people looking at the car with the 1.3 badges on it and then see a white blur as I leave them still sitting at the lights.

I think a worked 2L pinto, with EFI, turbo, intercooler, cold air intake and a few other selected mods in that innocent looking car would definately suprise a few people...

pinto's can make power pretty cheaply, are very strong, easy to work on and very cheap to buy not to mention that parts are every where....
so although you want a twin cam(who doesnt?) id stick with a pinto unless you want to watch cash get taken away in wheel barrows......
