Default The cost of cars

Ok, so I know many here hate Street Machine magazine, for various reasons (but please persist with me)

This months issue has a nice Lime XY GT faker. FR18's, warm clevo (2V heads), pretty killer in the detail etc. I read in the article the bloke spent 80 grand on it

I want a similar outcome, not quite so showy (minus all the detailed underbody, the rims i want are 1000 cheaper), similar running gear but with CHI 3V's and a toploader, same interior, Wild Violet with GS kit on. Autometer dash. I'll be wiring it, will pay someone for the motor, gearbox reco, diff reco, and for all panel and paint work. Will buy the interior as a kit and assemble myself, same with suspension

Im thinking 30 grand tops. Where would you spend 80 grand on the above with a little more razz?

The bloke would have paided someone to do all the work my guess would be and when that is the case the money does climb a far bit to that point

Yeah i've read that article.. theres no way that car has had $80K sunk into it. There's probably $10K worth of panel work, $5K worth of interior, $5K tyres/wheels and $20K worth of driveline so God only knows where he's pulled $80K from. I know first hand that modding a car is expensive but that claim is nothing short of rediculous...

I havn't read the article my self, and don't have a full knowledge of the value of the car of what the mods would of taken, but is it possible that he counted the value of the car within the total costs of modding it??

possible. But the article states the build took 2 years and cost 80k

so assuming it was bought a few years back, only GT's would have cost 40k then

I'm guessing most of that went on labour as he paid someone to do it. I had my GT in the shop a while back for "extensive pre rego work" as I didn't have the time to do the small jobs myself. I walked away $3000 lighter with only a hand full of things fixed. 80% of the bill was for labour.

car 10
paint 20
motor 10
trim 4
exaust 2
diff 2
box 3
wheels 2
tyres 1
rubbers 1
brakes 1
wiring 2
suspension 1
gt parts 2
battery,radiator,starter motor etc, 1
dyno time ,transport,phone bills,tools,roticerys,other labour 5-10
and just about all of those COULD double especially if things like motor, box or paint needed doing twice if not done propely or changed mind. i have just watched my mate pour 35000 plus into vl turbo which he did all labour including paint and panel himself

There is no way in hell paint will cost $20K. My mate has his E30 BMW coupe stripped back to bare metal and body kit re-straightened from one of Melbournes most exclusive and reputable panel shops for $12K.

Wait till you do it,then get back to us,its so easy to spend a rediculous amount of money.
Half the things youll spend on you havent even thought of yet..

Ill give a small example,
You want a hot cleveland, with CHI heads,
you may just find out, after doing it,that the gearbox wont cope,
and then you tear the diff in half,
just there you'll spend as much as you did on the engine,if not more..
Believe me theres more to it than you first think of,
it can drag on and on..
I have spent quite alot, just to get my car quick, and reliable,
and it still looks like a heap, especially the interior...

I also have not seen the mag nor the car, however the quote I got for paint and panel, on a rusty original, using metal no bog was in excess of 20k, that was just paint and panel, if I had wanted the motor removed and the engine bay done it was more. Yes if you know what the deal is you can shop around and get it done cheaper (and better?) for less, but I won't assume the guy in the mag knew this.
