mate i started at bottom with just forklift experience. try and get your generics and medical yourself then apply at employment agencies saying your only looking for mine experience. warehousing will suit you if you have forklift ticket and are quick on a computer. have some money saved incase your contract is short and theres a few weeks between jobs.
once you get a start learn everything that they are willing to teach you. show up everyday and offer to do the **** jobs. pays off in the end.
im on 32 an hour in mine warehouse with labour hire company but have interview to become permanent trainee for pit i work at.. good references from superintendant and supervisor helps.

We have a lot of kitchen hands and exploration crew jumping ship to drive trucks and machinery atm at our new mine.

It's not always who you know, although it does help, more being in the right place at the right time.

I personally know of two kitchenhands that have NEVER seen a 777 let alone be driving (operating) it within 3 weeks.......................scary thought eh

Yeah, good point mate, just a word of caution to anyone thinking of getting into the mining game.

Set yourself up a plan AND STICK TO IT!

Otherwise you will find it hard to leave "the good life" like most, including me

Whats it actually like driving the trucks? I'm picturing a lot of difficulty just driving the thing.

Though I hear visability is still better than a VE Commodore .

Do they just drive 12 hours straight all day, eat lunch in the truck while driving?

Driving the thing is a P.O.P, operating correctly is a different ball game.

Very limited vision, nasty, noisy digger operators on your bum all day, pit bosses giving directions, dust, LV's to dodge. GREAT STUFF !!!

Smoko brought down to the pit, if ya lucky, park up ya truck and have smoko, then back into it.

Really, some places are better at it, but we have Hamptons where we are

The property ship is sinking up in these parts mate just sold his house for 850 in moranbah the other day. Though I'm in the middle of gettin houses build elsewhere , once you been here a while you can have both , looking for all reasonable investments and a few toys on the side and there Is no real reason to leave , I mean everyone has to work may as well be here , my biggest plan is enough property / businesses owned for a nice early retirement . Mid forties would be ideal probably late forties though . It's not for everyone though which I think is what your hinting ay , and yes o know lots of blokes that have been here all their life with nothing to show

Yes, that was exactly the point.

I personally know blokes who have been in the game 20-25 yrs and have nothing to show for it.

Such a shame really, but it was a fair bit different back then

I knew guys who worked on the oil rigs in much the same position. The Daily Planet, cards, and an ex-wife seemed to take the lions share. I could only shake my head in disbelief. 7 on, 7 off, the off period was entirely spent at the Daily Planet apparently.

Talking about offshore oil rigs, thats another interesting one, would that be the same as a mine in regards to getting a job, or much harder?

Also whats the go with accomodation?

Damo, rigs are a different kettle of fish mate.

Expo rigs are usually 4/4, FPSO's are usually 2/2 rosters.

Best to get in with a 3rd party contractor.

Accomodation on expo rigs are 4/1 share, FPSO's are 2/1 share.

I,m talking 70/80's Russian or USA rigs here.

Yeah Daz, the itchy tit project.

Inpex have the project.

OMS is where you want to be http://www.omsau.com/

Or Downing Teal or Hays.

OMS are preferred contractors on most W.A rigs for catering and services

Easy way of gettin it on bro!

They are just big go carts , air seat , air con ,good stereos .best I could relate is like driving a normal truck mirrors are your only rear ward vision unless your in reverse then the camera kicks in only as an extra safety measure .the size you get over in your first ten minutes , as everything is the same size ....big .only contractor s ride you for lunch breaks otherwise its pretty relaxed as we hot seat change anyway , so you may not be on a truck for your next stint . I myself am a multi skill , shovel , dozer , grader and all the others , so I rarely drive the same thing twice in 1 day .go getters get ahead , lazy blokes dont and will often sit in a truck for years whining about it . I love my job been at it for 8 years now , you get back out only what your willing. To put in .

oh ive got plenty of moola , i hardly spend at all. Ive just recently got my Forklift tickt and on the Logbook hours for the Gantry crane. whilst doing Labour work (hard) and I do enjoy the Job im currently in , its just that its one of those Jobs you do the same thing over and over again. :/

Its time for a change , and the money is borderline between the amount of work we do, and think theyre rippin us blokes off. - everyone thinks about that whatever Job theyre in- but not so in the mines , like 32 p/hr is more like the rate Im talkin about!
