I see Crown Casino has had it's exemption revoked - but they've just closed the main gaming floor, the VIP rooms are still operating.

I was reading an article on this.

Professor Williams, the dean of law at the University of New South Wales said the following;

"Under section 109 of the constitution, if there is a conflict [between a federal and a state law] the federal law takes precedence".

"So once you get into areas that are clearly subject to federal regulation you could only proceed at a state level if you have Commonwealth support and the Commonwealth essentially providing room for the state to charter its own course".

So while it might be unconstitutional for a State Government to close its state borders, the commonwealth can over rule.

The problem and conflict in closing state borders is because...

"We have section 92 of the Australian constitution and it says trade, commerce and intercourse amongst the states shall be absolutely free."

Yep , that's a curly one but I guess when the constitution was written (unless section 92 is an amendment of course) none of these infection type matters would have been thought of at the time , aka coronavirus , various flu epidemics , SARS/viruses , EBOLA , HIV and such . ..Maybe trade and commerce are the key constituents though if they can find a way to allow that . We're in transit of people lockdown here in Tassie but the Premier insists that freight is exempt at this stage... Interesting ...

By all means quickly trial the malaria drug but that's not going to wipe out the disease for a fair while even if hopefully it's pretty effective on current sick people.
It's multiplying spreading as each day passes so all sorts of decisions not least by Trump's mob have to start happening right now.

Well, never in my life have I ever had to get up at 6.30am in the morning to drive in the dark just to buy bog roll.

And no, I'm not a hoarder.

(My wife could not get any yesterday in our area, after going to 3 supermarkets, and even standing in a long queue for half an hour, after which an announcement was made there was none left).

At 6.50a.m., I stood amongst 50 people outside the supermarket waiting for it to open its doors at 7.00am.

Doors open, and everyone rushes to the same aisle.

None on the shelves, "great!" I thought, then saw a woman with a roll in her hands... "Where did you get that?", I said.

"Oh, you have to go to the back door, they are being handed out one per customer by the security guards".

It's a crazy world at the moment.

Now i am no economist and dont claim to be, but lately ive heard a few very uneducated opinions. Pretty much dumb stuff like people saying the government should give people money and not worry about the economy. Thats not how it works. After the last gfc, it took a long time for my work to pick up. No companies wanted to spend money. How did that affect me as an employee? Simple, reduced work coming in means less overtime. At the moment with so many of my clients working from home, i have not a huge amount to do. So i can sence it taking a long time to recover from this.

This will be the biggest challenge of all after the critical virus threat has settled. Any small re outbreak in the months and years to come is likely to unsettle and undo any economic repair that was done not to mention the possibility of mutations which would render useless any testing and vaccine work currently validated.

Common sense is also being tested here and that’s also a concern as not everyone is adopting the same sense of responsibility. Human and cultural nature really is an interesting differentiator during these times. I just hope we all come out the other end of this somewhat wiser and with a better appreciation and a much higher weighting of the simple qualities of life v the material quantities of life....

A conservative Government committing 10% of GDP and doubling welfare with the stroke of a pen is unprecedented, if that's not enough to open the eyes of even the most ignorant/defiant to the impact that this will have on so many facets of society then I don't know what would be.

When I heard that Trump, the ultimate-right-wing capitalist, was considering giving $1Trillion, not to keep people in work, BUT to instead keep 100 Million Americans to stay at home by paying them... You know things are more than serious.

As a part time milk delivery driver, the average bogan dole bludger is now going to earn more money sitting on the couch, bong an beer in hand, than I make going to work and taking all the risk.

The average 2 child family on unemployment now will have more money coming in AND get all the benefits, than me the missus and 2 teenagers, and she's a health care coordinator dealing with in home aged care, so and we're basically essential services.

Ya got to laugh about it or you'd cry...

Nearly 40% of those Hospitalized for COVID-19 in the USA are under 55. 29% are 20 to 44 years old.

In France, 50 percent of the country’s COVID-19 patients in intensive care are under the age of 60.

A conservative government implementing socialist policy is to be expected. The most radical right wing government in Australian history was Hawke's (and destroyed our country and culture in the process). Menzies on the other hand ran a highly nationalised regulated and closed economy.

Never confuse what they say with what they do.

Im hearin' ya fella, my Wife works in aged care and im a casually employed school bus driver, when the schools get closed this week i'll be unemployed and unfortunately due to how much my Wife earns, which really isn't that much to be honest, we wont be entitled to anything from centrelink unless they lower the combined income test which means we'll lose $1400 per fortnight.
Thankfully we've lived off her wages alone for the past 2yrs and have used mine to pay off debt and save so we have a bit of a buffer we can lean on but it'll only stretch so far.
