I drive for a living and the number of people that just go through red lights and just generally not keeping their mind on the job is amazing, also I cant believe how many people drive with out their lights on at night in the city, I drive at night a lot in the city, it's a pet peeve of mine, cant you see you have no dashlight's for crying loud. Territory to return to days of speed

SPEED limit signs could soon be torn down on some sections of Northern Territory roads and limits on many others raised to 150km/h under proposals to go before cabinet next week.

A complete return to open limits has not been ruled out, but The Weekend Australian understands cabinet will be asked to consider three sets of changes based on different levels of road investment.

Signposted limits over 130kmh for rural two-lane highways are a mistake, when we have speed derestriction (//) that is the safer option. A speed-limit often gives something for peoiple to 'drive at'; often come what may. Derestriction offers no such thing, forcing the driver to choose a safe speed for the prevailing conditions.

Could be NT may go this way (with higher signposted limits for cars; ADR category MA) as the derestriction sign was removed from Australian Standard 1742.4 of 2008. Trucks would remain limited owing ARR 25. I'd expect to see signposted speed limits 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 and 150km/h IF the latter eventuates. I'd expect a reduction in the 110kmh rural default.

One of the biggest hurdles to the return of the old de-restricted zones is the condition of the hiways up here. They were relegated as a low priority once the 130 was imposed. Money was spent on the Darwin convention centre and wave pool and other "vital infrastructure" that should have been used for road maintenance. It will take quite a while yet before things are at pre 2007 standard. But it is slowly happening. The road crews are starting to fill the roadhouses once more.

Yep after the Chrissy Holiday period.
Had to laugh at Harold Scrubys' comments about it, considering he's the chairman of the Pedestrian Council, I don't think there's many pedestrians on this section of the Hwy, so it's not going to matter to him & he's out of his depth/area of concern.

The doctors need to appreciate that by having speed derestriction once again, but NOT geographically applied as in the past, but on a linear basis, people will drive at a true 85th percentile speed.

This aspect of itself is the great safety bonus. Because its not a speed limit, there is no 'target' to reach; you simply drive to the prevailing conditions.

Harold Scruby was the loon who tried, as Mayor of Mosman, to ban jogging in his council area; tried to get police fining people for doing so. Best ignored.

The council, however, did not buy into the recent tiff between former alderman Mr Scruby and marathon runner Ms Tani Ruckle.

A few months ago, Mr Scruby saw 60 Minutes footage of Tani Ruckle jogging on the roads of Balmoral and promptly asked police to charge her. Mr Scruby said at the time: "If our police force accepts joggers on the road does that mean that runners should also wear helmets? Can they jog in a clearway? Maybe they should also make hand signals ..."

Ms Ruckle said: "Harold Scruby was so insistent that police fine me that the police eventually had to get the minister to release a statement to clarify the issue ... it's a bit weird isn't it?"

Ms Ruckle now has to use "suitable footpaths".

Drove past that sign in the story a few times between 8-12 years ago when we lived in Alice and I worked at the airport for a number of years. We left the Territory in late 2005 (when we left Darwin to move to Mt Isa) and a truer word was never spoken (at the time) that you drove "off the NT and dropped onto QLD roads". Even then the Barkly Hwy was nothing special but had started to deteriorate badly the last time I drove it in December 2009 whereas the road east of Camooweal to Isa had improved greatly since the days of the single strip bitumen that used to get badly damaged in the wet season a few years earlier!

How times change. It is good to see that some sense is prevailing, there are some awfully long distances to cover during daylight hours up there. My understanding was the single vehicle rollovers did become more prevalent (I now work for the RFDS and we all still talk and compare "jobs" between sections) since the lower limit was introduced. Driving to suit the conditions was a way of life in the NT. I used to also live on a cattle station on the Lasseter before moving to Alice and where most people came unstuck was either at night (fell asleep from too long at the wheel or ploughed into an animal they just didn't see until waaaaay too late) or because of lack of basic maintenance of their vehicle - tyres, wheel alignment, brakes or even a decent set of lights if you absolutely had to travel at night.

The surgeons/physicians/paramedics are probably very good at their jobs. But that does not make them road safety experts. And I did not ask for more politicians I asked for more with balls like Adam Giles. Someone who has the courage to call the nanny states for what they are.
