Surely being (kind of) critical is a form of help. I've already said the smiley faces work and are understandable, it's just the whole "Rep Power" thing that seems not very effective other than instilling most of the power in to the senior members.

Quick better method -

1) Delete Rep Power/give infinite Rep Power to everyone. People see a post that helps them, they give the poster positive rep.

2) Have a simple automatic counter. If a certain member is receiving heaps of rep points, or a certain member is dishing out heaps of rep points (you guys decide on an algorithm for reps given out over a number of days, or whatever), those people are highlighted, like how reported posts are highlighted.

That way newbies can have their say on what they've found helpful, while the system has a security check in place to help minimise abuse by "enthusiastic" reppers. And, it gets rid of any notions of an "old boy's club" (re jcxr's post quoted by laminge at the top of page 12).

How lucky am i?"

Surely his response will invoke a warning? :

I wonder if I could make some of your rep go away?

Maybe a concerted effort on specific targets month by month?

So if you get a rep point by someone with not many/much rep power, does that face ever go off grey or are the rep points counted as what they are when given?

It's certainly a good thing that there's no Mods in here to chastise people for going off topic, as is done in other threads!
