I got Lobethal in Lobethal LOL! I actually don't know the official name of the beer, but I had it at the Lobethal Beirhaus which has been opened for a couple of years now. The beer is brewed locally by the owners, and apart from it being on the menus of some local restaurants in the Adelaide Hills, I'm unsure if it's available commercially.

Anyone else drink Blue Tongue? Sure, John Singleton is a high-profile bogan and the ad was pretty offensive, but it's damn good beer.

Also enjoy a drop of Steinlager Pure, from NZ - Really nice, drinkable heavy beer and quite reasonably priced!

You never see Eumundi Lager anymore either... Used to love that stuff, only 5pc alcohol, but you drink 4 of them and you're sweating like a fat lass and having hallucinations... Liquid speed!

KB Lager is another one to add to the list. My old man used to drink that stuff, that and XXXX super.

I had some blue tongue lager a few weeks back. There pilsner is quite drinkable too...

Steinlager is a great beer. Nice and clean and yes...not too badly priced in general.

Speaking of NZ beers, when I was over there, I developed a bit of a taste for Lion Red... Although I get the impression that it's one of those beers you get judged for ordering - I asked for it in a nice restaurant in Auckland and they looked at me like I'd walked in to Pier 9 in Brisbane and asked for VB with a metho chaser.

I had a JS pilsener this evening...first time for a while...and it remains a truly great beer in the pilsener style. Local BWS had 2 bottles left, sitting there as singles in the 'clearance' section. 2bucks a pop i got them for. Not bad use of some shrapnel in the wallet. I don't think it tops the LC pale ale for me (though that might be becaue i favour PA over pilsener generally) but its damn close. Floral yet sharp to the finish....great stuff.....

They don't make it any more. I was up there 3 weeks ago, asked for one at the Eumundi pub, and was told that it doesn't exist any more. Mind you, they still sold me a stubby cooler with the words "Home of Eumundi Lager" on it!

James Squires, Little Creatures, Fat Yak and even Murrays, not to mention Wicked Elf and Toohey's do a better Pilsner than Coopers.

If it is the Pils you like, try Squires first. You won't go back to the Coopers.

Took your advice and got hold of some squires.

I dare say I won't be changing beers for a while yet.

I think that's been gone a while now has it not? I was told by a mate to try it out but when i went into my usual stockists they said 'all gone mate...they dont' make it no more'.

Correct. Cascade has gone all metrosexual and completely fairy with their 'Green Garbage/Harvest' and some other stupid concoction that is called a 'craft beer'.

The Cascade Amber Ale had a really nice, strong flavour. Easily the best I had...Squires will have to do for now...

I asked Cascade why, and their response was typical...didn't want to give me a real answer.

No money in it probably. I've oft wondered how much 'more' it costs to brew a decent beer than a rubbish one. Taking out the economies of scale alone (XXXX versus LC for example) you'd think the raw ingredients cost would simply be higher for the good stuff. And there is 'more' of it per bottle. And it is usually lagered (stored) for some time for secondary conditioning too.

Alot of the anti-alcohol campaigners say australia is one of the highest beer consuming countries in the world...but the question is 'how many of those consumers are really beer drinkers? If you take out the occasional drinkers (who mostly admit they don't even like the taste of beer) and then the 'i'm getting hammered tonight', XXXX/VB etc. drinkers what do you have left? Add the sadly uninformed (i used to be one) and less than 25% of beer 'drinkers' are true beer fans. That is my impression anyway. Throw in the noticeably higher costs of top level beer (though you can get some good mid range stuff for ok prices if you know where to look) and its no wonder alot of the great beers of old can no longer be found.

Squires and others still bring out some new stuff from time to time but i find its getting harder to find affordable mid-range stuff any more just to stock the fridge with.

I got some Hoffenbrau Oktoberfest stubbies at Hahndorf the morning of your wedding from the German Arms hotel, what a good drop! They brew it each year to coincide with Octoberfest, but puts you on your bum after a few as it's up in the 7% range.

A beer I tasted last week was called Kooinda, 4 guys brew about 800Lt each Saturday at a house in Rosanna, they built a special brewing shed and use swimming pool water recirculated to cool the mash during the brew.
A very nice drop too, won plenty of awards and on the way up

I bought my first slab since being 18 today, anyone had "Ice Beer" before? It was $33 for 30x 375ml cans, plus the box looks pretty cool. Its in the fridge waiting to cool up

It tastes like a generic beer, but its real easy to drink, thats a plus. It aint bad.

Its made by Tooheys. Tastes like light ice, but it goes down real good, a bit weak on taste and only 4%.

Shocked to see this thread so quiet guys....especially with the hot weather and festive season. You'd think plenty of (hopefully) good beer was consumed lately, responsibly of course.....

Here is a quick pick i took of the selection i put together for the family this christmas. I'm sure you can work out which end of the lineup is the 'no so good' one LOL (no i didn't buy the carlton cold....). Have to say that readoak pale ale was interesting....though not as wierd as the peperjack.... Apparently it is a SA ale with red wine (can't remember the variety...). Can't work out if i hate it or love it LOL!

So, how about it fellas, what beer did you partake in this christmas season???

I am over in Canada at the moment and the beer selection is amazing and very cheap in comparison to back home in Aus. There are a fair few nice brewers in Toronto I think my favourities would have to be

Most of my funny "I was so drunk I woke up in a seal enclosure" stories start with mixing red wine and beer.
