Back in Wang again (Vic. not QLD. GasOLane) today, thought I would try a new bakery and with a name like "Wangaratta Best Bakery" it tempted me.

Lots of nice looking cakes on display and a great looking hot food bar.
I bought 2 steak mince pies and an apple turnover (lastest addiction)

Pies were OK and flaky with the mince a little bland and dry. Like I said it was OK but with 5 other bakeries in Wangaratta alone, this wouldn't be my first choice here next time.

I'll save the apple turnover for afternoon tea.

A life rule for me; any business that has the terms 'best', 'quality' etc generally can't be trusted.

If you need to put that in your business name, instead of allowing your product to speak for itself, there's probably a reason for it!

To be fair the rest of what was on offer looked good but there are to many good bakeries in Wang to dwell on this one.

Yeah,have a pancake place over near St Marys.They reckon they have the best pancakes,well they aren’t pancakes they are crepes and they are a long way from the best.Roddy has probably tried them,so maybe he will give his opinion

Do people still eat Kitchener buns? Can you still get them?

Not that I can actually eat them being as dairy intolerant as I am, but I do remember them leaving you in a diabetic coma once you've consumed one.

Yes, still available in many a bakery in SA and if you eat too many on a regular basis, your body shape will resemble one. BTW, counting Calories or Kilojoules in this thread contravenes many Local, State, Federal and International laws plus the Iaw of gravity/gravy!

How about weighing cakes? I’ve never done it before last weekend but I was curious about the small Chelsea bun I bought from the bakery. 250 grams. It was a decent dessert after my steak and mushroom pie.

The only drive through I know of is Krispy Kreme at Mascot airport, and they’ve been reviewed in earlier posts.
Bread hasn’t been covered yet. Bakers Delight is my choice for fresh bread. None of the hot bread shops can match it and the supermarket bread never tastes fresh. Peanut butter on fresh bread is one of life’s simple pleasures.

I am now addicted to the Vienna cob from Clarendon Bakery.
Not buying bread anywhere else.
Make sure you buy the seeded one if you get there. So good.

On the bread Milawa, hands down. I can not think of one of their products I didn't like. So many good cafe's in most of the towns use it on their menus.

Here in North East Victoria its considered one of the countries major food bowls.
There are so many great places to eat and buy produce directly from the farm gate. We rarely go to a big chain supermarkets.
Sorry to the vegies here but the local beef and lamb here is worth every cent but saying that we often cook (locally made) Tofu satay with local Broccolini.

edit... and do all this outside on a 2 burner butane cooker ...Gaso

I've never heard of a drive through bakery as CB states you have to walk in an experience the smells. imo.

I totally agree but...

If it's a regular haunt, you know exactly what you want and it's pouring with rain, you don't have to get wet to get fed.

A staple in Tasmania. I’m sure there’s also a recipe either in the Dundee Homecraft book or Edmonds, so probably from England.

Are you sure, you are talking about Victorian Apple cakes, like these pictured.

They are usually upside down, filled with apple (what else) Icing on top and made from a short pastry. (biscuit)
Seems weird but yummo. I think Beechworth bakery call them something else.

Yeah, when I mention these to other bakers in other states they think the same or usually shrug their shoulders.
Delish, if done right but I've had a few crap ones too.
