Sometime after the war 2 cats were damaged during a storm while at anchor off palm island. They were hauled onto the beach and bulldozed into a pile!!!
Bits of the wrecks still remain there, and stupid me missed the oppourtunity to visit them while I flew in and out of the Island all those years ago.

There's a catalina wreck up north past the Goodwin Island Chain off the Pilbara coast, interesting dive!

If I had the money I would love to rebuild one. Would have fishing rod holders where the cannons used to be!

FYI The A7 Corsair was a fantastic plane, and far from ugly, and the GeeBee R1 and the XF-85 were just plain cool!

Bit harsh but you are right in so far as 'ugly' being the eye of the beholder. Some pretty famous aircraft in there in their own right irrespective of their appearance. The Guppy was pretty ground breaking when it came out....and i've always loved the A7 Corsair (almost as much as the F8 crusader!) even if its knickname was the SLUFF (short little ugly fat ******) LOL.

I've atcually seen the 'big nose' EC-135 (B707) aircraft from the USAF at cairns airport when i was a kid. Not the prettiest plane out there but certainly looked different! Pretty freaky that pilots say that massive nose didn't reall impact handling characteristics much at all....wouldnt' think it to look at it...

An interesting illustration on how Pave Tack works.....

You can see it mounted in the bomb bay...this was used to prove to the then current government that the F111's were still relevant and capable by aiming a laser guided missile though the Defence Ministers office window in the Russell offices.

They also bolted these to F4's as well...

The F-4 was able to use the pave tack yes, but it rarely was.
In Australian service the F-4 (no pave tack) was limited to carrying iron bombs and was rarely seen armed with missiles or anything else for that matter (training bomblet pod notwithstanding).

Its a shame the F-111 is going. Such a capable aircraft...

Yeah, it used to mount it where the centre luggage pod went....due to it's non-integrated installation, it was usually a hindrance with all the extra drag.

And yes, it' a damn shame.

The pave-tack was originally used with a 'designator' and 'strike' pair. This was particularly the case in the Gulf War where the poms used Jaguar's to target a site and then other aircraft to hit them (perhaps tornadoes....can't remember). Unfortunately it does take up space on the aircraft and so this was a neat trick to get around that issue...though i suspect not very cheap having to use an entire extra aircraft and crew...

As for the F111, I'd say it more to do with maintenance costs than anything, at least in the short-medium term. These days new weapon systems come with maintenance deals and so you can get big savings out of your suppliers if you set it up like this. I'd say boeing is doing that for the airforce with the super hornet but correct me anyone if i'm wrong.

Fact is it has also got alot to do with covering your bum. The defence dep know that when the JSF turns up it will cost (when its all said and done) a motza (as well stealth maintenance) so by getting the super hornet they have a cover should the jsf run late (again) or cost so much they can't buy as many. Then you pension off the Fa18a/b and keep your superhornets and jsf as a two level fast jet fleet. One does air defence the other focuses on ground attack etc.

It also increases your flexibiliy should you go on to decide to build an aircraft carrier (highly doubt this though) because the super hornets retain most of their naval aviation features. I read that most of the second batch of super hornets will be wired for elint/recon so they can be converted into the EF18...very tricky. Its also easier to 'integrate' with a modern digital battle scenario and has pre-existing compatability with a range of stand off weapons that at least partially neutralise its range shortfall versus 'the pig'.

I'm a huge fan of the F-111 (and no not just because it can do a dump and burn) because its is still very very good at what it was built for. Even in the modern era its still a damn good all weather long range strike aircraft...and recon. But its the law of diminishing returns. As a likewise fan of the FA18 (never got the fascination with the F14 tomcat) its not the worst compromise in the world. Doesn't look as good....but then again not much else does!

As far as i know it covers maint and GSE...

There no plan to keep the Super Hornets... at the moment the paln is to give them back once the JSF is delivered and we are stuck with one type in service as our front line fighter which does everything.... not a smart move.

its actually an EW aircraft, but again the aircraft are only being prewired. We arent buying any of the ECM pods.... Its a "just in case we keep them option"

Seen that one a number of times - I have a low turn photo by the same pilot in a Mk VII at Biggen Hill around here somewhere, very low, low as you can go!

What scale is that again? I'm pretty sure I saw some free patterns for airport buildings on the Net that you can download, print, cut out and assemble.

Scale is 1:400 i made a huge error, i was being impatient with first panel and didn't line it up properly, then used super glue on it. The second panel i used ordinary glue stick which has worked at holding it down but also allows me to peel it off the mdf. The panels do not line up properly and panel 2 is perfect but i cant get the mat off panel 1. I am going to have to trim.
