I guess the extension lead wouldn't stretch that far either.

Well after getting trenched in the quarry, I was looking forward to a fresh apple cake. Two bakeries later, all sold out, came home with another apple turnover.
Oh well maybe next week. On the croissants.... there are a many good places where they are crispy and flaky but have had others made of a bread consistence. Anyone else notice this ? p*sses me off because you can not tell looking at them from the outside.

Just got me thinking I must like bakeries, our bedroom is a converted ex Boulangerie delivery pantec.
Pity it still doesn't have the smell.

and it was
It was only a 10-15 drive. But still annoying to turn up and see the gates locked. Gonna try again on Monday before work. Get in early and hopefully get some fresh out the oven.

Rutherglen wine region today and a chance to try Valentine's Artisans sourdough bakery.
Yep, a couple of beaut pies. A crispy pastry with a thick dark gravy and a heavy pepper taste which for me was good, others might find it a little overbearing. Thought they might have sold me pepper steak ones. Must come back here to buy some of their breads as they really looked yum, I had already bought some Milawa bread across the street. And again no apple cakes for sale. Couldn't resist posting the E series Falcon and HQ Holden next door both daily's in pristine condition.

Scones. They’re not the first choice of cake at the bakery, although Bakers Delight offer a reasonable selection of flavoured ones; raspberry and coconut is the latest. But when it comes to plain scones, served with jam and cream, the true masters are the Country Women’s Association. The CWA deserves an honourable mention here.
There is also a place in the main street of Leura that serves hot scones in small flowerpot containers. They’re nice on a cold day.

Quite often, regional towns that have an RFDS branch at their airport have a fundraiser group called"The Ladies Of the Womens Auxiliary". There's always scones on the fate days but not just any scones, fantastic scones made by the morning tea experts.

I remember the worst one, raining, cold, big NSW bike ride leg Wingham to Gloucester along the hilly Buckets way. On the brink of hitting the wall and 5 km from the finish on top of a mountain climb, though I was imagining things but....yes, the ladies of the local CWA with huge trays of food. Cake, scones, sausage rolls and butterfly cup cakes never tasted so good. yes I bought a whole tray and sat there eating the lot. When we got down into town we both sat down and ate a roast chicken from IGA. Before dinner. yikes. Beechworth bakery has some really nice huge date scones.

Easy scone recipe. Warm up the oven to 200C. 3.5 cups of SR flour, 1 cup of cream, one cup of lemonade and a pinch of salt. Chuck it in a large bowl, mix till your arm aches. Throw it out on a clean bench and squash or roll out to roughly a 20 mm thick slab. Add more flour if too watery or more cream if dry and re-mix it on the bench top. Once you have the slab of dough, cut to a round or any other shape with whatever you have to cut with. Dip your cutter in flour after each cut. Do not touch the sides of the scones before baking. Surface tension plays a big part on how they rise. A molested scone will not rise evenly. Re-mix the slab by hand to make another one to cut from until there's none left.Once they are all on baking paper placed on an oven tray, brush with milk and bake em for 15-20 minutes. When golden brown on top, they're ready. Should be just over half an hour from no scones to mission accomplished.

How far are we straying from the “traditional Aussie” walk-up (or drive, if you must) bakery range?
Because I really like some of the more ethnic stuff - not sure if it’s legit in here. |

Who isn’t?
Baklava/balawa is an addiction! Freshly baked breads with regular (not fancy-schmancy) dukkah. The Lebanese pastries with a sort of soft salty cheese filling. Piroshkiy with potato or veg inside. When I can find it, the traditional tissue-thin flatbreads. Indian breads hot off the stove. Jalebi, laddu, barfi. I have a sweet tooth! |

For those in SA, not sure if its still operational but there used to be a really good lebanese hot bread shop next to vili's. Never bought from there myself but used to see and smell the products as co workers walked back in after buying from there. really mouth watering.
Like i said, not sure if its connected to Vilis or even still operating. Edit - google suggests it was/is called Flat Bread Bakery. No website i can find. 16 Manchester st Mile End.
