Because it still has 6 years to run, and a significant proportion of the development was paid by the Green Car Fund.

FoA covering both bases with a FWD and RWD large car proposal (ie with only one winner); or

FoA making a 2 pronged attack on the segment with a FWD version for fleet and family variants and a RWD for sport and luxury variants (like Lincoln even though that idea seems to have gone quiet now).

Regardless of which one it is, the presence of a Taurus and Ford Fusions in and around Melbourne in 2010 is making much more sense now.
Or the 2 designs could be
* Falcon and Territory/Edge.
* Falcon and Fairlane/Lincoln.
* Falcon and Mustang.
* Mustang and Territory/Edge.

The wheels seem out of proportion, anyone else get that feeling?

In a recent interview Mays suggested that they were future Falcon and Territory
but he didn't give any other info to suggest RWD based or otherwise.

I have one (FG XT), I just checked and the wheels sit inside the wheelarches just like the picture. For further information on the picture, it was off the car news website Jalopnik late last year, spotted by a reader.

I think you are right on the two model design proposals as being Falcon and Territory, I think GoAuto made the reference however it was not a direct quote.
