They’re normally just tethered low near the trailing edge, the cable or chain rakes back up to the body or frame at (say) 45°. But it does sound like your mudflaps are courteous to other motorists at your expense - could easily go twice as high.

I was always told that the mud flap had to be lower than the centre line of the axle so if your mud guard was lower than the axle, you didnt need a mud flap, the last trailer I took for licence had solid guards to just lower of the axle line, it passed was only 6 months ago

Taken from https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/in...l-requirements

Wheel guards may consist of either permanent body structure or part structure and other components, including mudflaps. The end of a wheel guard including a mudflap (if fitted) need not be less than 230 mm from the ground.

The trailer is so low to the ground you'd think a mudflap wouldn't even be necessary. It's probably purely aesthetic at this point.

Same Australia wide, that's from RTA NSW, there are some small differences building trailers, but height of mudguard from ground is same or you went interstate you would get defect, so that and light placement are identical, some States though differ in wether you use 1 safety chain or 2, but the rest is the same or you couldn't go out of your State or Territory, mudflaps are optional, if the guard is 230mm from the ground it's legal.

It's not necessary?....did you read the page I posted for you?
My 4x4 had 1 long rubber flap, but it was lifted 3 inches, and my off road camper trailer had a guard on the drawbar, made from sailcloth, to stop stones hitting trailer, the law states that it must be 230 mm, so that's high, that's 9 inches imperial, wish you showed a wider photo, but to put it in perspective a 2 litre plastic milk carton is 240mm with the cap on!

Cheers Billy.

Probs the wrong thread now, but I found this video which gives a good overview of the RAAF HS748 fleet, affectionately known as the Turbo or Draggie to those who worked on or around them.

This video was shot in 1996, which would have been my second year working on these as the avionics design engineer. The video mentions the Solonia tasking; a contribution to maritime surveillance within the Pacific Region, which the Draggies participated in around that time.

That tasking caused heaps of issues, especially with significant amounts of condensation being formed in the aircraft's air conditioning system, the results of which appeared from behind the navigation station located just forward of the propline (seen in this vid where the student navigators are working).

Gosh I miss the sound of these flying around the area.

I did read it but it doesn't really change anything unfortunately. I'm trying to get a roadworthy on the trailer so that I can sell it but the roadworthy guy flagged the missing mudflap. I'd ripped it off the night prior to the inspection.
The white plastic part of the trailer in that pic is 220mm from the ground, not including the mudflap, but good luck having that argument, sometimes it's just easier to avoid the drama.

the way im reading it as long as 230mm and above is covered you dont need a mudflap, so id say you are correct.

Received notice that I’m supposed to be in a jury for three weeks starting early December. After all the nonsense I’ve worn the last six months, I’m going to put in for an exemption. Plus I have a slight vocal tic that surfaces under stress, working a trade solo it can just blend in with someone talking to/swearing at their job but in the relative quiet of a courtroom it may distract from proceedings… Witness takes stand, Juror C immediately utters “**** you”…

What really lit my fuse, though, was a note on juror pay after the eleventh day. From that point, people who meet a “traditional” definition of being employed, receive more than twice the daily rate of those who don’t. It makes a mockery of the notion that we aspire to blind justice, when there is active discrimination against jurors.

Leesa, the standard for building small trailers is National, not State or Territory, go to your local traffic department and ask for a handbook/guide to building small trailers, and ask to see an inspector, show pics that you have shown here, 220mm is legal in all States and Territories, your inspector is probably a local mechanical service in a regional town, all I can say is he is wrong and there is a National Standard, that standard is the go to by law.

I will put more pics up and my book is 22 yrs old, nothing has changed, except light globes and couplings, basic measurements are the same, placement of lights, guards, length of drawbar etc, etc, your inspector has not studied the rulebook, or don't give a damn!

Regards Billy.

slowsnake I don't know how much experience you have being a woman and telling a man that he's wrong, particularly to mechanics whose entire sense of masculinity is often tied to their line of work.... but telling an unknown-to-you mechanic that they're wrong is a sure fire way to start a war.

He estimated my trailer's weight at 2.5 tonne and when I responded that it was stamped 1.1 tonne, he flew into a fit and got shouty and then felt the need to try educate me on things about my own trailer.. presumably so as to re-inforce the masculinity he thought he lost when I corrected him on the trailer's weight.

As a woman you learn to pick your battles and a $100 roadworthy certificate isn't it, especially when the guy who has just taken offense is the one who in the end will sign the slip or not.

I feel sorry for you, just go throw a brick through someone's window, attend court and pay the fine, then you are excused from jury duty! ...

During the court case for the Milperra Bikie massacre, I employed a juror on nightshift, he slept all day in court, then home for shower and food, then to our workshop, he just welded all night till 6am, no supervision, I had 42 tonne of fabricated pipe to get out, big job for a small shop, but got it done, was for BTR Johnstone Yennora, but the guy I employed loved it, cash, no name no packdrill, too easy!....

Wear a shirt with some kind of gothic statement on it, put some goop in your hair and slick it into a quasi-mohawk... loop a chain from one belt buckle to another and bam, you will probably not be picked in jury selection.

Edited to add: you've had a rotten year but next time you get selected, consider giving it a go if you haven't done it before. I was on the jury of a murder trial and despite being grim, it was an interesting experience and I'd definitely do it again.

Well, he's an ********, and he should not be in that job, I asked if you are taking it to a regional local mechanic?
These guys are on a big power trip, I cop it too but just have to eat crow, so it's not because you are a woman, a man, an alien or any other species!...its because he has got a problem!

Report him, or take it to a major centre, but lodge an official complaint, against him, not the members here trying to help you out.

I'm not complaining about you slowsnake, it's all good, you've been very helpful. He wasn't a regional mechanic, I'm around the city and he was a mobile mechanic specifically for roadworthies.
We've all got bigger issues at the moment so let's leave it be, I'm going to stick another mudflap on it, take it to someone else for the roadworthy and then move on.

Leesa you are not the first one to be done over with RWC by mechanic who thinks he knows better than the regulations and never wrong; sometimes it just easy to comply and get over with it or find another mechanic.
I have empathy for your predicament.

I agree with this. I was selected earlier this year, the only juror that was challenged and removed was a dude in long cargo shorts wearing a hoodie covered in skulls. Everyone else was well presented and kept on the panel.

It was a good experience to see how the system works even though it was also a grim case.

I’d do jury service, albeit in my hi-vis, but the timing is not good for this one. I just missed being empaneled in one of the earlier (2004) trials of Robi Amacha. The only challenge was against a bloke who was probably the older brother of that fellow described by Sneaky.

Today’s irritation is looking like harmonic balancer failure on the Pug daily. It will be a cu$tom rebuild, sadly, if so.

Geez I hate it when the media poke around in someone's career wether sports person, musician etc, just to get a few more likes on their newspapers website or magazines Web page.

But Tim Paine, what a dick head, a real Richard Cranium 2nd!
These idiots know they are being watched constantly and worshipped by children and adults alike, geez so 4 years ago he sent a pic of his old fella to a woman and got investigated by Cricket Australia and cleared?......wow they coppers now are they?

But to drag it up now is just "chopping down a tall poppy" or is there an ulterior motive here, like getting another person into the Captains job?
Remember Richard Cranium 1st, think his name was Smith or something similar, a cheat like Warner, who both through bad management of lesser light players who looked up to them, or worshipped them, sans Cam Bancroft, and then they get on International TV and "Cry" like babies, geez I hate that, crying over losing their income not the respect others had for them, and if they re-elevate Smith back up to the job I will never watch Australia play cricket again, I just hate people who make a big thing about making a mistake, walk away quietly and keep your whining gobs shut!

And yet another cowardly attack on a 19 year old male by another male aged 16 years, they argue at a railway station, the 19 year old walks away, good on him too, then the 16 year old follows him, he walks out of a shop and the 16 year old gives him a flying head kick?

The guy walked away, and now knocked unconscious instantly, the 19 year old is now in hospital, he is WA Police Officer, off duty at the time of the attack

But he walked away, situation defused, I really do hate that!

First time as a hospital inpatient, took 50 years to make that one, not enjoying the saline drip - but had a CT scan and the contrast liquid was intense - so it’s relative…
