I'm getting 2.0 on Telstras best plan. May as well be on dial-up. It's the bane of my life and apparently nothing can be done about it apart from moving house.

Well I switched to the darkside (Telstra) because in my country area they have the monopoly on infastructure and my ISP (iinet) could not offer me anywhere near what telstra could in terms of speed, phone line etc. On iinet it cost me $149 for a speed of 10000kb with 40gb download I then had to pay $39 for phone line etc. I only paid $149 once and went back to 8000 for $79 (still steep). Anyway now I pay $129 for all my calls, 100gb net at ADSL2 speed. My best download so far has been 13000kb, far better than the 700 I was getting with iinet and cheaper. However if it were not for Telstra having a monopoly on ADSL2 in my area I would not be with them. Still a good deal but.

My results

[`[*Test Results from <a href="http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-test/results/13097600">Oz Broadband Speed Test</a>*]`]
[(----------------------------------
Test run on [*11/09/2010*] @ [*01:27 PM*])]

[(Mirror: [*iiNet*]
Data: [*15 MB*]
Test Time: [*11.47 secs*])]

[(Your line speed is [*10.93 Mbps*] (10932 kbps).
Your download speed is [*1.33 MB/s*] (1366 KB/s). )]

Note I used the iinet mirror as the telstra mirror was giving me a max speed of 356kb, go figure

don't blame telstra, it's iinet that need to negotiate with them for coverage in your area. Most other ISP's have deals in place including ones much smaller than iinet so that they can service country areas with ADSL2+. iinet is one of the few who still doesn't.

IInet did as did some others but they wanted astronomical prices. Like $140pm for about 40gb due to having to pay telstra wholesale and passing the cost on. Funnily enough but, since switching to telstra I have a faster speed than when I tried IInet ADSL2 that piggybacked telstra.

I have been with Telstra Cable for a long time now due to having a crappy old house with shoddy wiring and not being able to get a stable ADSL signal.

I was paying $189.95 a month for 200GB and then a month or two back I got a letter saying that my plan would now be $89.95 for same data... Thanks!
Then I got an email saying that the 30Mb cable speed had now been enabled in my area and all i had to do was reset my modem.

I was with Telstra Bigpond out of necessity, but after these changes, I would be with them for choice too - quite happy.

After our home pc finally gave in yesterday ( it was a long battle, it was nearly 8yrs old - she served us well) we went out and purchased a new one.

About 2 months ago we switched internet providers from internode to Optus because we could finally get cable in our area, however internode couldnt match the packages (for data or price) that Optus offered. Now, the speeds on the old Pc we 19.14 for downloads.

I just ran this on the new pc:

The download is fast! Pages load instantly. Not too sure what is happening with the uploads. Will have to look into that

Ahh the wonders of modern technology

Nice - are you on a 100Mbit plan? Your uploads are capped, that is all you get and its faster than most other plans (Except ADSL2 where you get 2-5Mbits upload bandwidth).

There new prices are good, I get 100GB internet at 30Mbit, home phone premium and Foxtel HD Platinum for $188/month - bloody bargain if you ask me.

Cable is grossly asymmetric. It is a system designed to transmit high definition video in one direction with internet as an add on.

Not so, the DOCIS 3.0 standard (which is Bigponds new standard) allows for 48Mbit down and 30Mbit up.

Also DOCSIS 3.0 allows for parallel chanels which can boost speeds to 343Mbit down and 122Mbit up. This is how Optus and Bigpond are offering 100Mbit plans. The only reason the speeds are slow on the upload on any internet service is to prvent people running there own web servers (pirating etc).

Don't tell the USA what you think, their whole internet is based around cable...

No I think I've got the slowest ADSL, stuck on a RIM so I can only get Telstra 1500 :(

Could get ADSL 2+ 40km further out 4 years ago, crazy.
