Heads up Syndrome, it's not just oil; it's the entire commodity complex. Watch for the Fed raising (or chickening out?) interest rates this coming week. If so it will be the first time in 7 or 8 years. Responding to the GFC, rates were dropped to crazy lows which injected one final boom into the commodity complex and emerging markets. Capital was fundamentally mispriced by the central banks: if left to the markets interest rates would have been way higher. Should the Fed raise, all those who took on way too much debt, or producers who cannot now service payments as of oil/copper/iron ore prices being smashed, are going to be under acute stress. Already, junk bonds are beginning to blow up - commodities first this time - while in 2007 it was tranches of home loans with very dubious lending standards. As then, this is spreading to other sectors of corporate debt.

Geopolitically, the Saudi's pumped in the 1980's with the aim of reducing the revenue of the USSR just as Reagan greatly increased US arms spending (500 ship navy and re-activation of Iowa class battleships, for eg) - and history would say that worked. Same again? Or more like the 1930's with the rise of trade blocs, currency wars, embargoes, and proxy wars like the Spanish Civil War?

So hovering around $1.10 per litre is probably the best price we will see for a while which is where its presently at.?

Unless oil drops to $20 per barrel which has been predicted by some lately???

It wasn't a $1.10 when I was driving to work this morning. Way higher than that

Funny how the Tapis crude has dropped along with the diesel wholesale price but unleaded wholesale price is increasing. Unleaded at the pump likely to rise sharply.

Guess that's only fair considering the NZTA must pull in a fortune with those petrol taxes. Also explains why we only have like 6 speed cameras

Just picked up 98 in Auckland for $1.65, I've never seen petrol this cheap since before I started high school hahaha. Yes, I'm part of the generation that got their first car when gas was peaking at $2.10 a litre... and my first car was still a 3L sedan

Ye this just sucks.

I just did a quick calculation and a tank of fuel is almost $15 more expensive at these new prices.

How can they charge so much when the wholesale price is so low???

Yes it does because if Brent and other types of crude oil prices are down, Tapis will eventually follow.

Eventually yes but the wholesale price of unleaded has not. Look at the chart I posted.

Neither the fuel companies nor the government would like the price of fuel to come down. The lower the fuel price the less GST collected.

Just like house prices and stamp duty, rates etc. Keep the balloon inflated at all costs to the detriment of the people.
