I have rode a proper road bicycle once. The rubber band tyres and no suspension would be fantastic in a velodrome or on a good cycleway, but terrible to ride on public roads. Quote:

How about we stick to the facts and not just go cyclist bashing.
1/ Pedestrian got hit by a cyclist running a light...what a car has never hit a cyclist running a red light? 2/ Cyclist vs car/truck/motorcycle...cyclist loses every time. they break the rules they get hurt, badly. Seriously, yes they are idiots if they run reds or break the road rules, but at the end of the day they come off the worst 99 times out of 100. Can we just close this thread now... |

Cyclists should demand that everyone is treated equally and everyone obeys the road rules. They should be the group leading the push for compliance for all road users. Hop onto any cyclist forum and you will see threads of hundreds of pages devoted to moron motorists. Cyclists go armed with video so they can report people to the police. On the same forum you see "excuses" made for cyclists breaking the rules. The best thing that cyclists can do is to set an example through their own behaviour.

true, but who's the one who has to live with the fact a cyclist went in front of his truck??? not exactly something you'd wanna live with, especially if the cyclists just went out in front of truck with out any warning

this is the smartest comment I have read In this thread. Its also goes for motorists. when I ride my cheap **** $179 push bike I brought 2 years ago. I don't have much problems, might be because I am always aware of whats going around me. I always keep as far left as practical and if traffic is to heavy. I will use a foot path. I actually prefer to use foot paths as the paths take you in places cars cant go (legally) I don't where lycra either

That is true. Car enthusiasts have the same issues with anti hoon laws. Someone has a modified car and they are labelled as a hoon. Lots of generalisations happening here.
I would prefer idiots are removed from the road, whatever method of transport they control. |

If I ever see a cyclist break the law eg run a red light, my default question I yell to them is ' would you do that in a car'? So get agro, some just ignore.
And I ask this every time whether I am riding, driving or walking when see it. Like the hoon example for drivers, the minority can give the rest a bad name - the idea the the rest should demand the minority pull their heads in is admirable but flawed as it will work for some but not all. Some people just believe they are a law unto themselves no matter what they are doing or who else it in endangers. |

End topic!
I couldn't agree more. I used to be amazed but sadly used to it now. Quote:

unless you are 12 or under, or its a shared path, i'm pretty sure its illegal.
i've seen this sort of comment pop up a few times in this thread now and it annoys me, as people obviously seem to think that wearing the right clothes is just for looks or something. you wouldn't go for a jog in thongs or boots would you? would you play cricket without pads? cycling clothes are for a purpose. i'm rarely on my bike for less than an hour, and often well over 3 hours. my longest ride is 170km. try doing that in something other than the right clothes and you would be extremely sore. there should not be a stigma attached to those who like to wear the right equipment. people don't look down on motorcyclists who wear leather. its no different. |

pull your head in mate. you can't continue to tar all cyclists with the same brush. how would you know whether or not 'mcnews' is or isn't courteous and respectful on the roads?? you don't, so stop making ridiculous generalised statements about things you know nothing about. its getting very tedious.

The subject is not black and white. There are issues on both sides and don't forget many people are motorists and cyclists and pedestrians. Well, in fact all of us are also pedestrians. All road space users need to respect each other.
My only two bob's worth is that there is merit in discussing some form of insurance/ID for cyclists to cover those instances where they are at fault and e.g. injure a pedestrian as per the original post. Nobody should be exempt from personal liability. Last edited by russellw; 27-01-2015 at 12:50 AM. |

i would be more than happy to wear ID, and more than happy to pay a fee to cover third party injury. i know many others who think the same way. i believe there are companies out there that already provide this, but its not compulsory to have insurance to ride. |

You're an idiot Tempted. I know we aren't meant to say such things, but honestly mate, you're a dead set idiot.
We (cyclists) would LOVE to contribute to the roads.. Oh wait.. our taxes already do! So you can shut up about that. We've heard you crap on and on and on and on about the bad cyclists that "abuse" the road rules a million times. Gee you've caught us! we are all secretly anarchists. Oh wait, that's complete rubbish too. Yes you've come across some bad cyclists, but jesus mate, let it go. You come across bad drivers all the time, yet you don't seem to have such a big chip on your shoulder about them.. Did a bike bite you once? Is that why you're so irrationally upset about it? You want me to have a licence plate on my bike? No problems mate! Let's do it! I feel sorry for you when you follow me around 24/7 waiting for me to slip up and all you get is footage of my licence plate abiding by the road rules. But wait.. you can't handle the truth that the VAST MAJORITY of cyclists are law abiding riders. You can't handle the fact that some simple courtesy from BOTH PARTIES (you reading this mate? You seeing that I said BOTH PARTIES) would result in a much better road system. I'm not lobbying for cyclists to get everything their way, that is completely stupid as well. I'm simply saying, if cyclists can ride to the law, and with courtesy (which I practice EVERY.SINGLE.RIDE) and Drivers can drive to the law, and with courtesy (which I admit, I probably do a lot less than I should) all would be well. Now, did I space that out enough for you?? Were you able to keep up? PS. I'm just about to head out for a ride, I'm sure that'll annoy you, knowing that I'm out, enjoying life on Sydney roads..

I have said multiple times in this thread I would be the first to pay rego and CTP as it also provides benefits to cyclists that they don't have today Also kills the number one simpleton argument that cyclists don't pay their way So who do I send my cheque to? |
