I predicted this months ago but the reality is that Ford has a huge job ahead of it.

The issue goes to what made Ranger a sales success and that's all thanks to the 3.2 I-5 diesel
being 85% of sales. Obviously, those buyers wanted two things, more performance than
the base I-4 diesel and an engine with more basic capacity that sounds different to an I-4.

Ford did such a great job of up-selling Ranger with the 3.2 I-5 that it now acts against them,
how can Ford now convince those buyers than a 2.0 I-4 diesel is more than adequate?

....and that's before we even discuss the expected $80K price..

The original Raptor had been created by SVT for a special purpose, this does not compare and defeats the original ideas of SVT Raptor creation. Yes I am biased.

Looking at the stats this morning I think it will be a dud here. The towing capacity is 2500kg.

I’m guessing because of the rear suspension set up??? It’s longer, wider and more powerful than the ranger but tows 1000kg less.

If it’s 80+ forget it. I think it will be an awesome truck but really, 2500kg??
Spending that amount of money and limiting yourself to 2.5 tonnes is a negative in my book. The 2500kg may be less depending on the GCM - load the ute up and the 2500kg rating will come down. Wonder what the ball load will be - one would think 250kg but will have to wait and see. The 2 litre doesn’t worry me, the limiting factor of not being able to hook up a full size caravan though does.

I’m excited about the truck and disappointed at the same time.

I was looking at a new vehicle in May but this is now off my list.

See what GM bring out in the not too distant future.

i'd like to see a side by side test between this and the old 3.2 ranger and also chuck in the amarok v6 just to see if the new ranger just a dud with a body kit.

i'd say the new engine is a winner but its a raptor FFS, give it wings!

Anyone considering buying a Raptor Ranger that is concerned about how much it can tow don't understand the concept of the Raptor IMHO.

That is : Trophy Truck (aka Race Truck) for the desert.
'cause lots of Aussies live close to a desert

The Raptor Ranger is not meant as a tradey tow vehicle for the 'burbs', and there is the likely problem, as they are the demographic most likely (with the assistance of work tax breaks) to outlay the required coin. Then they'll use it as a personal vehicle to ferry around their mates and other toys (dirt bikes, jet ski etc.)

A little disappointing to say the least but not unexpected.
I am interested to see a comparison offroad between this and its competitors, it is supposed to be able to handle up to 170km/h off the beaten track.
New and redesigned suspension is key.

Another interesting thing, did the Asian market and their restrictions on large capacity engines influence the design?

Raptor though? Should have changed the name.

Ford have hardly painted themselves into a corner with the supremeness of the 3.2. It’s not exactly a powerhouse. Even the Colorado has more torque.

They have simply undersized the engine with the Raptor. It will still be fantastic and a big seller.

Why on earth would you buy a Raptor to tow?

and 2500kg all of a sudden is not enough

We’ll see what the competition brings to the table over the next 12-18 months.

As long as it's the American market I will be happy. For some reason car companies seam to think we want the same cars as the Asian market. Sorry to break it to them, we have more in common with the American market than Thailand or wherever else these are sold.

Are you even allowed to drive off a gazetted road into the desert in Australia? I'm sure it's illegal and someone will report you. I was told by someone who went in a legit trophy truck in California that you pretty much can drive anywhere you want in the desert as long as it not private property


I didn't see anything about the lights. Since it's 2018 I expect LEDs everywhere except maybe just some Bi-Xenons for the front at the worst.
Or have Ford thought that the same lights that came in cars 100 years ago is good enough?

We dont really even have any deserts that are not covered in vegetation etc

You can do trackless crossings of the Simpson Desert but thats more a slow lug at 10kph than at speed.

Some good beach dunes etc where it would be great fun though.

No one is buying it to tow, but if you wanted as an option one day to hook a full size junko or the like up you can’t. 2500kg is sweet F - all in the van world.
It’s about options, if down the track you could see yourself towing then forget it.

- ask Toyota about ‘not enough’, they got it pretty quick.

be interesting to see what the GVM and GCM is

Ranger can barely tow over 2500kgs anyway with any sort of load, fuel and passengers.

I think success for the Ranger Raptor will be hard to determine. Its size and performance compromises will mean it will likely never outsell a Wildtrak even if they were identical price. Rangers are already big, and this just got bigger. I dont think most local 4wd enthusiasts are too concerned with performance offroad at 170km/h, and would prefer better performance at 5km/h with the suspension fully articulated.

They have done a bit of work on the suspension to ensure it meets comfort and off road expectations

In order to engineer in that capability, Ford has basically redesigned the whole rear end of the Ranger and massively modified the suspension front and rear. The back end gets a specially-designed chassis frame with a new unique frame housing, new coilover rear suspension with a Watt’s link setup, and solid rear axle. It’s not just a straight swap from the Ford Everest’s architecture either. There’s been some serious budget thrown at this one.

The frame design comprises various grades of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, with stiffened side-rails that can accommodate an extra g of vertical loading. The rear dampers are manufactured by Fox Racing Shox and feature 46.6mm pistons front and rear as well as internal bypass technology. Securing them are a set of forged aluminium upper arms and cast aluminium lower arms.

Such is the stroke and travel of the dampers that Ford claims to be able to offer a ‘limousine-type’ ride on-road. That’s a pretty big claim for a dual-cab ute, when the current best in the class is only just about acceptable on tarmac. “The standout experience of the Ranger Raptor, hands down, is how far you can push it off-road versus any other available production road vehicle in our markets, and still ride like a millionaire on-road,” said Damien Ross, Chief Program Engineer, Ranger Raptor, Ford Motor Company.

You see its this sort of attitude, that see us with a diesel Ranger Raptor..

Raptor is supposed to be a vehicle driven really fast over snow and desert, the current model has a Baja mode..

Its sits far to high to hook up a trailer, and can you only need top look at one to know that


But I suppose you can look at what we are getting and think about how much it can tow cos its no Raptor
