Why, Holden, why?? Why did you have to throw out the reputation you had developed up to 1988 with the VN and this comedy festival of a motor?

I wonder what was wrong with the Skyline motor in the VL? With that, the Commodore could have developed into a worthy competitor to the Falcon. As it stands, compared to the Falcon, the Commodore is a joke.

Epic fail indeed.

The Yen soared during the VL's run and the costs of the Nissan 6 blew out, hence the switch to the washing machine full of spanners V6.

i was working at suttons just before the VN came along and remember seeing prototype VNs with rb30s and rb20s in them....i think they sold VNs in NZ with rb20 engines as well as the V6...if holden had continued with the rb would we be seeing commodores with nismo badges lol

Don't bag the commodore V6 too much - yes in VN-VR form they were far too rattly, but in ecotec form in the VS-VX they were fairly punchy, better on the fuel than the falcon and they didn't blow head gaskets as a matter of course!
If you want to bag a commodore V6 bag the alloytec in VZ form - I went from an ecotec VY work car to an alloytec VZ work car - I lost all overtaking confidence in the VZ. The ecotec was rough (just like everything else about holdens, rough) but at least it had torque.

I still drive a VX commodore, the engine is nothing to crow about. Does the job but still lame.

My wife as a VXII - good fuel economy but the engine is harsh and has no torque to speak of - it often changes down 2 gears to go up a hill with cruise control on - from 1500rpm to 4000rpm just to go up a hill...

And the seats are terrible for a 6 foot man - like sitting on a board - a friend had a Calais - it's seats were like leather covered boards - VX seats are an epic fail...

Yeah, I wouldn't think there would be room for a straight six in a VN - engine bay too short and bonnet too low..

It was "repaired", but they did a shody job. The boot would fill with water quite literally. Took it back, and the covered around the lights with Sikalfex!

Not happy at all, I complained to NRMA, and had it repaired down the coast. Southport Smash Repairs did a great job!

It is now a pity that the boot Archerfield Smash Repairs used has rust in it. So it will be going back again!

Many panel shops are an epic fail at doing real repairs....

And what about the VX Boot Hinges that chop down into the load area so you need to stack your stuff with gaps for the hinges to go into.
I'm not sure if other late model cars are the same but that is an epic fail...
