Coupes - you decide the fails.... so here goes 1975 XB coupe and a Landau both converted to convertables... both sitting for a long time under tarps

The Landau

Easy fail for the coupes... while removing the roof makes it look good, it ruins the little strength the body has. Large full length box steel needs to be added to the bottom of the chassis, but this doesnt cure the massive twist the body will still go through when it goes around a corner.

Also when the roof is up it truely looks awful as can be seen in the bottom picture. Saw one in the flesh a few years ago and it was rubbish.

Not to mention that it would probably leak like a sieve.

BTW, what's that thing on the centre console just behind the shifter?

The XB has a Queensland Transport Blue plate for the convertible modification ...... I wonder if he knew someone,

Apparently the Landau was registered as a convertible years ago in NSW and there should be no probs getting it re registered..... do ya think?

I cry that they would have both been great coupes on the road and not a Frankenvehicle

The one I saw in Townsville had box steel chassis rail re-enforcements.
In order to stop torsional twist it really needs a roll bar added behind the rear seats, as well as strut tower bars etc....

Remember that back in the 1970s at the Melbourne car show Ford had chopped the roof of a coupe to turn it into a targa roof. The next day they couldnt open the doors as the car had collapsed that much.

Wow there's one up here? I note the background, at a wrecking yard? That would have been a really nice coupe if they had not cut the roof off. How long ago was this taken?

My XP Coupe's been convertibleised and i reckon it looks good!
Each to their own, but, the XB with the roof up looks dicey because of the highish C pillars!! Mine on the other hand looks ok because of the straight lines of the quarter panel are maintained thru to the front guards which then rake downwards (XM). Mine looks more hot rod whilst the XB just looks, er, wrong!!

The XB w/out the soft top and an A1 interior would look the ducks guts! Cheers

Coming home from work...saw a copper on the side of the road who pulled over a two tone VN which has seen better days..had chopped rear springs, the rear looked to be sitting way low, front was stock height....had the manditory stockies on the back...and a full hektic driver!

Laughed out loud.

I was looking more at what looks very like a CM/CL Valiant "GXL" beside it...you can easily tell it's a GXL by the black trim around the windows and most importantly the way the black trim continues onto the top of the doors...Ok OK...so I'm a real Valiant nut...

There's also the little matter of the XP actually being available...in the USA...as a convertible. Like you say, the bodyline gos straight from front to back, and they really look the goods when converted to a convertible. Same with the old two door Valiants you see made into convertibles. They also work because the Dodge Dart and Valiant sedan in the USA were available as convertibles.

Chopping the top of a Monaro or Falcon coupe just doesn't work...the huge fat rising area towards the c-pillar just makes the body the wrong shape to look like anything but "a car that's had the roof chopped off".

Number plate is YFE-846; it could be that the guy who owns it in that video did not build it as it was for sale on Oct 4 2010 and maybe sold around Jan 14 2011 and that video was posted Jan 28 2011 (or it could just be that the video was uploaded after he sold it)

http://www.boostcruising.com/forums/...pic=641196#top

Either way the ****** in the videos needs his licence taken off him
