Wing reminds me of the Turbo Supra.

I'll have my 86 sans huge ironing board wing please.

I think this will be one car that will cop a lot of ricing up.

Honda drivers will have something to move onto now that Honda make nothing but whitegoods.

Toyota have released a turbo and supercharged concept with 240 kw and 400nm, but apparently the manual gearbox can't handle that sort of torque. Might very well be previewing the supercharged version though, doesn't look like getting a turbo.

Polo GTI ftw. Those things are like go karts And if you're getting the DSG... well nothing matches it for smoothness. You wont regret getting the Polo.

Yeah, they stopped making them in manual when the 1.4TSI engine came out I think last year for the MY11 model.

It is always worth a test drive. They are slightly cheaper and a 2 door RWD coupe with a clutch whereas the Polo is a 4 door FWD hatch with no clutch.

Totally different in almost every way so just go and see which you like more.

I think most people would be pleasantly surprised at this car. Especially in manual. Having only driven the auto, I'm reasonably impressed with it and know that I'd absolutely love it in a manual.

Wouldn't be such a bad car if they didn't put such weak components in it. It all adds up when you can't extract more power without having to fork out huge $$. But I'm not here to throw some dirt on it, it was a wonderful venture from both Subaru and Toyota and from what I've heard it's a great drivers car.

Question Re: Toyota 86 price $29,990!

Why would one buy a totally brand new untested model?

ALWAYS buy the S2 update, don't do and be the testing bunny for motor-companies

So now we know why no one bought the FG, they were all waiting for MK2...

Why cant we see through the smog? Its a corolla sportivo in a fancy dress. 200nm of torque wont make for much of a drive. 147kw power? Didnt the vt commodore get 147kw.

Sure it looks pretty but surely noone is fooled.

Buy a falcon fg xt with a set of rims and it would bolt away from it from a set of lights.200kw and 391nm.

Lol...wow...lights...you'll go far kid. Sounds like "the smog" has stung your eyes...

Comparing a sports car with a Taxi ford a traffic like drag?

Come back when you have a general idea about what the point of a car like this is.

Also I dont know why some of you are comparing a boring VW Golf or Polo GTi to one of these things! The power is mind numbingly boring in those cars. Cant stand flat torque curves. No fun in that. Real fun cars have to be pedalled!

Do you know anything about Power to weight ratio?
how much did the VT weigh?
the 86 weighs approx 1260Kg

It shares nothing with the Corolla,
Corolla: FWD, inline 4cyl
GT-86: RWD, Subaru Boxer 4cyl

These cars aren't built for traffic light drags
but try and keep up to an 86 in an FG XT or a VT(or even VE) on a tight twisty mountain road

You don't know why a Polo GTi might be cross shopped with a Toyota 86? Really?? I'd say it might have something to do with the fact that they're both around $30k, both are small sports cars that are a hoot to drive, can be driven every day, then taken to the track on the weekend. Only one makes brilliant torque all over the rev range and has a top of the line DSG gearbox, and the other one makes no torque till 6,000rpm and has an optional slushbox automatic.

I'm just guessing though.

The amount of sooks who have have posted in this thread is truly amazing.

If you dont understand the point of a car such as the 86, fine, but please stop bringing up hopelessly missguided comparisons to falcons and commodores. The argument is old, clapped out and just plain aggravating.

As motoring enthusiasts (supposedly in some cases) we should be thankful for having another option out there when it comes to buying a new car, instead of picking the thing to pieces.

Ummm, ones a rear wheel drive built SPECIFICALLY for being balanced, and to teach the dynamics of drifting, the other is a front wheel drive hatchback.
Seriously, those not understanding what this car is about, PLEASE GO AND WATCH INITIAL D. Once you learn about Tak, the Fujiwara Tofu shop, and the Takahashi brothers, come back and discuss why this car is such a good idea.

The car this one was supposed to be a tribute off was a Corolla, the AE86.

Wtf does a VT commodore have to do with this. Stop your trolling. You don't get it, then it's not for you.
It's not for traffic light warriors like you.

while i like the sound of the 86, i do think some are perhaps over stating how good this thing will be.
much like the original, it will require time and money to be spent on it to be the mad drifter. what it does have, is the base dna to make it a worthy drifter/track car/ weekend toy

some i think have let themselves get a bit caught up in the hype.

Saw one of these on the road today and they do look good.

The only thing that I could pick on was the hideous tail lights, they look like cheap **** Altezza lights.

Other than that a very nice looking car.
