So i do enjoy spending time with my kid. I say he's my little unit, but he's 13 and 5"10'. So my little big unit. We did rc cars this arvo before dinner. He never brings out his own gear because even though I'll fund any breakage, he just doesnt want to break anything. So he likes running my stuff because I have 2 rules. Rule 1. If you break something i have before i will not be upset. Rule 2. If you break something i have not before i will be impressed. Pretty simple.
So a good time was had, nothing broke. I did also gift my kid an olight torch. He liked it. |

A guy I know just got his car back from having a new engine it in and came around to go for a blast.
It's a mid 90's Toyota Starlet (yeah I know). 1300 turbo putting out 150hp, real wolf in sheep's clothing. Looks like a POS on the outside but underneath it's got a trick fuel injection, fuel pump, upgraded discs etc. This thing was a rocket, like driving a go cart. Put a big kids grin on my face.

Everytime I mow my lawn "must service the mower, next time, next time..."
Well today was that day. The air filter was choked. Good to get that little job out of the way for the next 12,18,24 months.

Was visited by a friend this afternoon who had been isolated by flooding since Saturday. The relief and exhaustion very evident.

My kid gets my sense of humour and now rolls with it. So he had an operation last wednesday, thats irrelevant, but on thursday he sent me a link to an rgb controller for his pc. He has a pc with the clear case and rgb LEDs in it and crap, just no controller so theyd just cycle colours.
Yes i think its stupid, but he thinks its cool. Anyhow. Ordered him the controller. No express post, he can survive the time in the mail and i wasnt willing to pay postage. Thing came overnight. That was a tad weird. But it came via startrack in a dangerous good satchel with a sticker on it saying it had a signed declaration and signiture required by the person who ordered it. So that was me. So i told my kid i had his thing and we joked about the dangerous goods thing. Silly stuff like maybe they took an rgb controller as an rpg controller. This is where he showed his comedic value. My mum picked him up to come for dinner tonight. My son told my mum i have a package for him labelled dangerous goods. My kid left it at that. My mum was stressing out and started to have a go at me, but my kid kicked in showing her it was a harmless computer part. Both my kid and I stayed composed and he wisely said he needed to go to the bathroom. I knew that was i lie so i went there with him so we could both have a laugh. |

Thing about my sense of humour. You omit things. So no lies. Just turn it into a good story. Like my kid and the dangerous goods package. Years back i had a work experience kid. The job was pulling cables in a hospital. Nothing sus there. At the end of the day i said to the bloke call your mum and ask her to pick you up from the hospital. He knew full well id drop him off at the nearest train station, but said if he called his mum and said that she'd have a heart attack.
Later that night, talking to my mum i said i had a work experience bloke that day. He was good at what he did etc, ended up in the hospital. Yeah, factual, my mum freaked out. We were working in a hospital. The young bloke was not a patient. Last edited by .:4:.; 23-10-2022 at 11:20 PM. |

Years ago, I had a work experience kid from one of those “Christian” schools. I spent the whole week minding my tongue, didn’t want him bringing ideas home that might cause trouble. On the last day, a couple of mates dropped in, stoned off their nuts and promptly began raving about some pornographic film they’d been watching.
My heart sank; they’d launched before I could politely deflect any of their enthusiastic commentary. After a few seconds, Work Experience Kid pipes up: “I’ve seen that one, too!”. |

Anyhow, we had an apprentice who was an absolute grot when not around clients. What came out of his mouth at times had you thinking who raised him? I knew his dad, he was a nice guy so maybe the apple falls further from the tree then you think. At smoko one day the little grot was talking about something grotty, the italian bloke googled and his results didnt match up with the topic. The 'job' did not involve changing the rim on a car. So the italian bloke moved over here to live, not a working holiday, so he was taking english classes. So he had homework as such, he'd often ask during work about the meaning of words and we'd all help out. He was working with the grot apprentice. He came in one morning very annoyed at the grot apprentice. His teacher got very offended at his answer to the question 'explain the word spread?'. He did not answer putting butter on toast. In his heavy accent his answer was 'like the woman and her legs'. |

Picked up my dog from the vet.
Thought she had a small bit of stick stuck in her throat. Endoscopy might be needed, would cost about $2500. They did an examination under anesthetic, found a grass seed stuck in her gum and had drilled it's way in deep. Bill was $500, bloody happy about that, better than 2.5k.

It seems that NSW is banning single-use plastics next week (?), which is a positive, but the other states have their own timetables ...

And this is what is banned in NSW as of 1 Nov: From 1 November, the NSW Government is banning single-use items including: plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, chopsticks, plates, bowls and cotton buds food ware and cups made from expanded polystyrene rinse-off personal care products containing plastic microbeads.

So I was in Myer checking out a clearance rack in menswear.
Spotted a really nice cashmere style coat, thought "I'll have that". Checked the price, $270 down to $49, definitely have that. Then I saw the size 5 XL, no wonder it was cheap. So looking around a bit more then I see this big guy asking the assistant if they had any coats. "No sorry all our winter stock is gone, best look on line". He starts to walk off, I call him over and show him and he's liking it. I walked off, about 10 minutes later I see him carrying a bag, "I got it, thanks bro, exactly what I was looking for." My good deed for the day.

Hallowe’en… All these people decking their houses out with fake cobwebs and whatnot to make them festively “creepy”.
I bet any kiddies doing the “trick or treat” caper in my street give the house a miss because the overdue lawn, unregistered cars and pile of scrap metal make it look… creepy? |

Yesterday at the shopping strip there was a sign writer painting Christmas wishes/Seasons Greetings stuff on the butcher's window - brushes and paint. He must have been 75, trained in it a long time ago, still enjoys it, does hot rods too.
Also, a local house has as yard art an old cement/mortar mixer on wheels (small wheels, like wheelbarrow wheels); long, long ago it would have been towed behind a vehicle to building sites by the bricklayer; petrol engine to power it or maybe an electric motor. Can't imagine towing one of them today. |
