This is how strict Centerlink is now:

Example of waiving the liquid assets waiting period

When Jenny finished work she had $8,400 in savings. She has claimed JobSeeker Payment and has a 6 week liquid assets waiting period.

At her phone appointment, Jenny tells us she doesn’t have that much money any more. She has just spent $1,200 replacing the tyres on her car and $1,000 registering it. This reduced her liquid assets to $6,200.

This is still above the maximum fortnightly rate of JobSeeker Payment for a single person. We don’t consider her to be in severe financial hardship. Jenny will still have to wait the 6 week period.

Jenny calls us 4 weeks later to say she’s been in a car accident. She’s just paid $5,000 to repair her car. She’s also spent $1000 in the last 4 weeks on costs of living. She’s now got less than $200 to live on.

We now consider Jenny to be in severe financial hardship. We’ll waive her waiting period from the date she told us about her accident because she met all these conditions:

her available funds are now less than the maximum payment rate for a single person
she gave us receipts for the tyres, registration and car repairs
her reasonable costs of living are less than what she would get per fortnight for her maximum payment rate.

$200 to live on and now she qualifies.

They want you to burn through that money first then go after them crawling on all fours looking for a coat to tug on "Please sir, may I have some more?"

No handouts for me and my fam but I know people in a far better position than I working out whether to bank their extra $$$'s or put it back into the economy like, you know, its supposed to be used.


I know someone who owns 2 properties, who could buy a handful more tomorrow, deciding this right now. I lost 20% of my salary, no handouts, and remain grateful it wasn't 100%.

I'm so sorry to see the plight of Victoria at the moment . To every single person impacted by the strict new level four lockdown in Victoria I send you my wishes for the next few weeks and no less so to any fellow AFFers that'll be impacted financially or hopefully not medically .

I'm pleased to be in Tassie at the minute . Only one active case in the past 10 weeks and that was a Tasmanian returning from Victoria a bit over a week ago .

Premier Gutwein has just announced this arvo that our borders will remain closed to all the other States until at least the end of August when initially S.A , W.A , Queensland and the N.T were to start re-opening with us in about a weeks time ..

Looks like so many of us Taswegians who love travelling to Victoria , NSW and the other States will not be doing it any time soon and of course our own tourism industry reliant of great interstate and overseas visitors will keep struggling big time as well .

Can't wait to see the back of this crappy year ..Stay safe , distanced and protected from this dreadful virus everybody ...

Jesus Christ, how does reducing an abattoirs output by 30% reduce the risk of covid? It will still take the same amount off staff!! And more concerning, supermarket distribution centres to reduce staff by 30% this is a disaster, you thought empty shelves were scary before, just wait, this is not workable if we want supermarkets full of food and supplies.

There could be zombies and aliens roaming the streets and you'll still be able to get a Big Mac meal in the drive thru. Or at the very minimum, 24 nuggies.

Most small businesses are hurting from the first wave so i don't even know how they will survive this.

Food is a basic necessity and when you are restricted to only 5ks from home, and your local supermarket has nothing, what then?
And you’re right, there won’t be any local takeaways left to deliver to your door, they can’t afford another shutdown.
I don’t do conspiracy theories, but where does this stop? When we are all on a universal income? When you take your weekly government food ration?

I think those of us who are allowed to operate all have to reduce staff levels by 33% from the looks of it, I guess I'll find out more come Wednesday on what's going on.
