i probulbly safe to say that most drivers these days dont understand/dont care if a car is front or rwd.
most would appreciate fwd because they have more interior room.

rwd was the go in the 20 years because there were no decent fwd's but in this day in age it is mattering less and less.

most performance enthusiests would still want rwd but 90% of customers arnt enthusiests, there just mums and das who want a reliable and efficient car.

Would you prefer your Focus ST to be front or rear wheel drive?

Not sure if the percentages are correct but I would be in the 10% category of performance enthusiasts then.

oh ok yeah sorry bout that.
I think it must just be that Im one of those enthusiasts from the old school that bmr is talkin about...personal driving preference & an old school concept that a car is not really a true performance car unless it has RWD.
I guess nowadays that concept has changed a lot? at least in some quarters anyway.
I spose if you grow up with front wheel drive it becomes the norm anyway, & certainly the more recent generation of cars are that way.
Maybe we'll eventually see large Fords & Holdens racing each other at Bathurst with front wheel drive ???

Better weight distribution,
Better steering,
Better power down for high performance engines
Better balance
Better towing
Better tyre wear
Better styling proportions not having to house a front transaxle...

Is that enough?

most customers probulbly wont notice the better steering, power down, balance etc as they dont spend there days driving to the limit.

if the better styling was true why isnt commodore or falcon number 1 on the sales charts anymore instead of the fwd mazda 3?

most fwd drive cars are usually better on fuel and cheaper to buy in the 1st place, they normally do wear tyres faster but what would you rather do, have a focus and replace the tyres every 30,000km or have a falcon were you replace tyres and diff bushes every 60,000

falcon, thanks.
& my diff bushes are fine :-)

EDIT: Sorry, I don't mean that as derogatory towards the focus. I heard they are a very nice car. It's just that the Falcon is my personal preference & it ticks all my boxes.

W/O turning this into a which is better, fitting a quaife (LSD) to a FWD car makes a world of difference. But until one is fitted all thats needed is a change of driving style.
Anyway im not bothered my car does what i need, thats why i dont need a Falcon.

yeah I understand that but it just felt odd, we both couldnt get used to it and prefer the feel of rear wheel drive. I only posted in reply to the earlier question of why someone might prefer a RWD.

not trying to start anything... Im sure the most people wouldnt be able to tell the difference between the two, but I certainly could.

Can't say I've driven a modern FWD car. More like early naughties era. They also have a numb... disconnected feel. And a wider turning circle.

Whilst i can agree with the turning circle, IMO i dont see it as a deal breaker.
When you have driven a decent well sorted FWD car come and let us know, until then.
I could have bought a falcon, but as i said i dont need it and i cant see myself buying another.
When are you going to buy a new Ford?

Having a front and rear diff, with the gearbox at the back allows for pretty much 50:50 weight distribution.

Evo's of all kilt have probably the best and most direct steering of anything this side of a $100k Porsche. Evo's are AWD.

Power down is much more efficient in an AWD car.

Again, balance of an AWD car is superior.

Towing? No. All the good tow vehicles (Landcruiser etc) are all AWD.

Tyre wear... Okay?

Styling... No need to comment on that really.

Okay. What qualifies as: 'a decent well sorted FWD car'?

Wide turning circle's are so irritating. A medium rear driver can slot into tighter parking spaces and whip around with greater ease than equivalent sized FWD cars. That's why you seem 'em all parked at angles in car parks. That's a deal breaker for me.

And you didn't really reply to my opinion on numb feeling disconnectedness with FWD.

Everything you just said is subjective to particular cars only. Just because an AWD Skyline is superior to say.... A Corvette. Doesn't mean that a suped up Volvo S80 with transverse FWD/AWD layout is again superior. Because it's very much heavier than a Mondeo to which it's loosely based, particularly up front.

Balance is in blueprints of the car being designed... not it's drivetrain.

Parked at angles? are you on. I can park mine no worries.
GTi, MPS, XR5, RS, Megane... shall i go on.
Sorry but i think you might need a little more real world experience, rather then looking and reading on the internet.

I dont feel disconnected, only thing i dont like that gives me a disconnected feel has nothing to do with steering but the electronic throttle. And i do get a little torque steer with my current tune.
