While the basic Ford Six was code named Barra, the Turbo version clearly deserved its very own moniker – again enter Gordon Barfield.
We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

Terrific wasn't it! happened right over the top of the town. I went up on the roof of this joint to watch. They use this joint as a vector for these fly overs.

Yes burnout, they are more popular than gas planes now, my P51 will do 140km/h no worries, some of the electric fan jets are 200km/h+

Peuty the hustler has got to be one of the coolest aircraft of all atime.... Like many great aircraft it was prodigiously expensive to operate, temperemental and apparently very difficult to fly. But it was one hell of a machine when you look at its capabilities compared to its contermpories it was in another league. A mach 2 capable bomber in the 1960s...amazing.

Only 100 odd made and serving for less than a decade in front line service. If you flew one them you were in a select group indeed. It had a crew escape pod.....beat that with a stick LOL!

Was eventualy killed off by that notoriously rational Secretery of Defense Rober S Mcnamarra....the guy that used to run Ford Motor Company. Still, he did push hard to replace it (at least in part) via the TFX program, which gave us that other favourite aircraft of aviation buffs....the FB-111. Sadly, as of the coming week it will be all over for that aircaft too. At least it had a 40+year run rather than the decade of the B-58. I fear aircraft like the JSF will never be quite as cool as the old tanks they will replace...

Quite right. I think this is because the F111 and Co. were designed during the Cold War etc and actually had a very real purpose to serve. That's what makes them very cool as warplanes, as well as being as menacing as hell even sitting still. The current gen stuff seems very generic to me....

RIP F-111, Thanks for the 37 years of diligent service. and for of course the countless taxpayers dollars being burned up in such an awesome way with the many Dump and Burn's over the years.

Yep, i will be on the roof with the camera shortly hoping to catch a few departing shots when they do there final flyover today....

From yesterdays Courier Mail....
Quote:
The jets will leave their Amberley base at about 11.20am (3rd Dec) and fly over Ipswich, Brisbane, northern NSW and the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

They'll fly at a relatively low speed and altitude to allow photographs and video to be taken, an RAAF spokesman said.

They are expected to pass over Laidley, Rosewood, Amberley, Ipswich and Brisbane at about 11.50am.

The group will then split, with the aircraft flying over Sandgate, Redcliffe, Bribie Island, Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa.

F-111s on the souther route will fly over the Gold coast, Coolangatta, Byron bay, Ballina and Evans Head.

The best vantage points include Mt Coot-tha, Red Hill church, Victoria Park, Toowong Reach, South Bank, the Story Bridge, Kangaroo Point cliffs and Mt Gravatt.

The aircraft will land for the last time at Amberley at about 12.45pm

Spent some of the day out at Amberley attending the Pig Tales F111 farewell, here's some shots. Reposted from my photo thread, just incase you don't go over there.

Here's some of my shots from today out at the base.

Here we go....

I'm upside down, bitches! aka "I was Inverted"

And finally, the precise moment of Australia no longer having a long range strike bomber that actually does the job....Oh well.
