The 18 deaths represent Costa Rica’s deadliest day during the coronavirus crisis. For reference, Costa Rica confirmed 23 total deaths due to respiratory viruses in all of 2018, according to the Health Ministry.
“Let’s not look at this as just statistics,” said Health Minister Daniel Salas. “They are people — people who three months ago were watching these press conferences and are no longer with us. That hurts.” The Health Ministry has confirmed 22,081 cumulative known coronavirus cases. This represents 1,011 more cases compared to Thursday. Of these, 496 people resulted positive via a PCR test over the past 24 hours. For the first time, the amount of new cases includes people who were not tested for the coronavirus. Rather, Friday’s figure sums 515 people who, since August 2, have begun exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms and live with someone who has tested positive. “If another person within the same family circle starts showing symptoms, it’s almost 100% certain that they have COVID. It’s a matter of practicality,” Salas has explained. Friday, 229 more people were classified by health authorities as recovered. Costa Rica has 14,596 known active cases and 7,267 recoveries.

Sorry... that was quoted from Tico Times News...
I think more to the point, with the above example, is just WHAT the true World picture is? Costa Rica is definitely not 3rd world, has been extremely transparent & pro-active through this whole thing (totally unlike our northern, and to a lesser extent, southern neighbors!) I’d suggest a huge percentage of the world’s statistics are utter BS, and submitted to “save face” Vietnam a classic example. Gunna hurt big time, for a bloody long time regardless!

I'm more interested in what happens in 2025 when the economic position of the country still sucks and there's huge unemployment, we had dramas with crime in parts of Melbourne before, it's going to kick into overdrive.
Or our ever worsening relationship with China - are we heading towards war? |

Here's today's story of self-sacrifice for the public good:
https://www.theage.com.au/national/v...07-p55jmg.html "In recent weeks, the Mount Buller community has been abuzz with stories of Melburnians sneaking into the village late at night, some even chartering a helicopter to a base near the resort, in defiance of travel bans and the lockdown." total fquits Edit: "One woman, who had contracted COVID-19 during a ski holiday to Aspen in March and refused to isolate on her return to Melbourne, was recently confronted on Mount Buller about her behaviour. The rumours caused tensions with long-term residents and business owners, but most were reluctant to notify authorities and potentially jeopardise their lifestyles and livelihoods. On July 28, Mount Buller Racing Club urged its members to contact police."

And this one is heartbreaking:
https://www.theage.com.au/politics/v....html#comments I dont wanna get political at all, but what a poor, poor, poor decision. Even if made by the other side it would be terrible. Unbelievable.

What we know so far is that the responsibility for training staff sat with the private companies hired to do the job, as stated in the contract. Social inclusion or not, if you are not appropriately trained, you are likely to have had the same result given how highly infectious it is. Then you have the blatant flouting of rules by security guards that had nothing to do with lack of training or social background. Then you add the family gatherings.....and so on and so on..... I'd like to know if the Vic government did anything drastically different to other states. And what control failures occurred that was directly under the government's ownership. Dan has already said he takes full responsibility, not sure what else the journos expect him to do until findings and recommendations are released. |

Reading some reports of medical papers, we're beginning to get an idea of what this thing does - including to the cases where it is not so severe:
https://www.cardiovascularbusiness.c...amage-recovery Patients had a wide variety of outcomes after diagnosis, but 78% had damage to their hearts. https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/202...-brain-damage/ "In this follow-up stage, neurological symptoms were presented in 55% COVID-19 patients." https://www.smh.com.au/national/seiz...02-p55hqj.html A Sydney doctor's experience; although fit and a cyclist, he has heart scarring, epileptic seizures. "But as soon as he had cleared the virus he found he struggled to ride the one-kilometre flat road to his local hairdresser and, as he sat outside the barber, his chest was “bouncing around”." - That last bit sounds like heart attack recovery tbh. Wish him well and hope he notices a gradual recovery.

426 new cases for Australia and 8 deaths sees the CMR rise to 1.343% and active cases rise to 9,100. NSW recorded 9 with the balance in Victoria. Victoria had a better week than the last few with only a 7% increase in case numbers for the week.
No new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.402% and active cases remain at 23. The UK recorded 758 new cases and 55 deaths yesterday so the CMR drops to 15.033%. Just over 63k new cases in the USA yesterday and 1,290 deaths sees CMR down to 3.220% and active cases at 45.4% with the raw numbers rising. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences. Other notable points: Italy passes 250k cases; Brazil passes 3M cases and 100k deaths; The UK completes 18M, India 23M and the USA 64M tests; North America passes 6M cases; Libya (404), Poland (843), Venezuela (981), Morocco (1,345), Romania (1,378), Ukraine (1,489) and India (65,516) recorded new daily highs, those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

VIC has 394 new positive cases and 17 further deaths since 11am yesterday. Two of whom are in their 30's. I think (if not mistaken) that is the highest recorded number of deaths in a 24hr period in VIC.
More global studies releasing data that COVID-19 recovered people (with or without symptoms) have permanent damage to heart and/or lung tissue (and possibly other vital organs). They cannot fully understand how the damage is occurring, and further research is needed. The question being asked by many, if there is indeed permanent damage to heart and/or lungs of people who have recovered from COVID infection, does it also reduce their expected lifespan? I would have to think yes. If one has heart or lung damage, and later in life were to fall ill with a related problem, their chances of recovery would be reduced would it not? If not for the damage, they may have had a better change of recovery? |

I've not heard the Vic numbers today but if it is 17 deaths then yes it's more than the 15 of a few days ago.
Without counting those, Australia had 77 deaths this last week, far and away the worst week yet and 38% higher than last week and there will sadly be slightly higher mortality numbers again this week given the case numbers over the last three weeks. The chart below depicts the case and mortality data since March for Australia - note that the case data is logarithmic so that both data sets can be scaled on the one graph: .. and the same chart for the last month only which shows that the trend for case numbers is starting to turn downward although the trend for deaths isn't and probably won't given the lag between case identification and death.

Of the 273 deaths in Australia, 123 (45%) of them have been in aged care facilities and 29 (11%) came from cruise ships.
In terms of infections, the split is slightly impacting females more (50.4%) but the deaths are a 55/45 split with more males dying. 65% of cases are still under 50's but they only make up 1.5% of the deaths. Conversely, 65.6% of the deaths are amongst the over 80's but they only represent 6.4% of the actual cases.

Very little difference between some cruises and age care facilities as far as age of participants is concerned. |

I've already lost lung capacity as a result of smoking several years ago I quit though so if I get COVID-19 I'll probably either die or need an oxygen concentrator. yes/no?
Same goes for my brother. Would like to know for sure if the damage is permanent or temporary, ie if the lungs can fix the damage. |

That's what makes the actions of the (statistically) younger community stupid, they are more likely hurting people likely not themselves.
The 6 week lockdown seems unlikely with the ignorant minority whinging about staying at home, masks etc. not to mention 'sovereign citizens' that don't understand containment (and taking it personally). Many Asian countries historically wear masks out of respect for others, acknowledged that we are in new territory. My Dad is in the same risk category having pneumonia twice in the past, stay safe ! |
