I thought some Canter's could be swapped between GVM's due to the 2 different tyre sizes available.

I dont know what its called I just call it the GVM as it reduces the GVM so it can be used with a car licence, never paid attention to what it list's as, I dont think I have seen a NVR listed.

I dont have to change tyres, just the reduced GVM takes it into car licence territory.

Might be because its a Light rigid?

How about, when rego is paid they send you a small sticker with the month number on it to stick on your window to remind you?

From what I can gather, the Canter can be changed from 4.500kg GVM, which is car lic, to 9500kg GVM, Light rigid, this puts it into 2 different licence classes, as the tare weight does not change, the rego fee is the same.

On my Dot Direct it allows me to change the GVM between the 2, as I have a HC licence I am ok, but if my wife or son drive it I can swap it so they are legal with their C class licence, they cant carry much as the canter tares out at just under 3 ton, but I doubt if they would even use the tray

It was when I first purchased it with the ROPS and all the mining spec crap, its a little lighter now and quite able to meet the Car licence criteria

Yeah, what I meant earlier but I'm positive it is based on what tyres you are running.

Traders you can up the GVM but there are 2 different tyre sizes you are required to use but Canter's were unique to this change.

4500 to 9500 GVM seems really high, sure you don't mean 9500 GCM

This is how the authorities nab you, they merely look at the tyre specs on the side of the road.

I think if you have the higher spec tyres you can alternate between the two no problem, but you cant go up with the lower spec tyres, I have 285 x 70 x 19.5 super singles so they are rated for more than what I will ever need .

You might be right with the GCM, I always get them wrong

This is from a truck forum I'm on. but the Canter is unique in this respect.

The Mitsubishi Canter is either under or over the weight with only a tyre change. The factory door plate puts the max weight at 4450kg with 7.00-16 tyres. It is over (from memory 5500kg) if fitted with 7.50-16 tyres.

You can register legally for either weight. Brings up a question if you fit bigger tyres but still under the weight - do you need a truck licence?

Its not just Canter, I know that Hyundai and Isuzu offer the same as I test drove 2 before settling on the Canter, both salesmen quoted that they could be derated to a car licence if need be, think of all the hire van trucks around that can be driven on a car licence, Hino's, Isuzu, etc.

Im sure if it has a maximum rating for a specific tyre and was regoed for a lower rating with the max rated tyre, it would still be legal, I think if you want the lower rating the truck comes new with the lower rated tyres, and if you want to go up in rating you have to change the tyres.

My canter has undergone second stage compliance, so it came new already fitted with the 19.5 super singles that are rated to 3350 KG a tyre

I cant see why you would change to a lower spec tyre to lower the rating when the tyre that is already on it is more than up to the task?

The truck dealers can only de-rate it once, you can not pick and choose to uprate a truck whenever you want to.
Unless you get a engineer blue modification plate to up rate the GVM again with appropriate mods.
The dealers change to lower rated tyres to allow them the de rate the GVM so it fits under the 4495kg rating (car licence) that's the law.

Must of the hire truck pantecs and trays around are already built to car licence specs. ie lower rated tyres. usually 6.50 or 7.00's

Yes GVM is set by the manufacturer.

You can officially change tare to give you more payload rating.
With an authority ID slip, RWC and official weighbridge ticket, the rego authority can give you a lower tare weight but can not change the GVM. in these trucks.

I know it doesn't make sense but that what it is.

Over here we don't have the blue mod plate that I know of, or the RWC or ID slip, we just have a rego p[aper and thats it.

Im sure because my truck was registered at the max GCM or GVM, I can lower and put back to max when needed, I also know if I was caught with a load exceeding its registered capacity at the time I would be facing the standard fines that go along with overloading for any vehicle here.

I may be calling it the wrong thing GVM, GCM whatever its called , I cant get into my DOT direct account at the moment as there is some issue when logging in ?

That's cool, would be interested to know how you do it, whenever you can get back into the DOT site because I have that exact same issue.

Have a small Isuzu NPR300 pan with 6500gvm. I am sure you can get these with 4495gvm.

I have HC licence, so no probs for me. We carry bugger all weight in it - a stillage of scrap tyres a couple times a day to our yard around the corner.

I paid for one of my staff to do their HR licence, however if I could de-rate the GVM anyone could drive it.

I rang a couple of the engineers on the DOT website, but they were not much help

Companies, usually smaller privately owned concerns, that go to the bother of commissioning a website with all the bells and whistles but do absolutely nothing with it.

In particular, businesses who have contact details including an email address or a direct email enquiry on their Contact Us page, only to completely ignore enquiries made via that page.

I get it, a busy business may not prioritize reading emails over actually doing the work/service they provide. In which case, a phone call will be the best contact method. But if that's the case, don't bother including an email address on your website, business cards, Google listing ect if you have no interest monitoring and replying to email enquiries. Because you are otherwise wasting MY time.

And the above applies to a variety of industries, but as mentioned, typically smaller businesses who are stuck in 1987 in how they run and market their business, but also how they interact with existing and potential new customers. These people also tend to complain about how the big multi-nationals have run them out of town and stolen their customers. In which case, wouldn't you be buttoning down your customer communication skills to provide that point of difference?

Yes I have a DOT account - I have attached screen shots.

I can only change NHV category which I tried - changed it to SR2 2 axle truck with 1 x trailer with less than 5 axles - and got sent an invoice for $168

It didnt show any change to GVM, so I took a punt and changed it back - and thankfuly got a credit for $167

I wonder if I change it to 2 axle towing 2 or more trailers - maybe they reduce the GVM seeing as how the GCM is only 10,000kg?

Anywhooo - no real dramas, as I have the right licence and one of my guys does at the moment, just would have given more opportunity for the guys with just car licence.

Thanks again for the help!

He could easily be talking about Pick-a-Part in Dapto. No phone number any more and a chat function that goes straight to Narnia. Just under $50 in petrol for a round trip by myself and no way of knowing what’s there unless a local tells you in advance.

They probably have a list of blocked chat names, you might be on it. Accidentally of course.

I should add, this particular issue exists because they refuse to publish a price list or price guide. Not even “From $XX” or “$XX-$XXX”.

Disappointed to note the Beehive Hotel is still closed.

A few months back the truck stop servo burned down (reviews prior offer perhaps a few pointers) so basically Coolac is dead. That’s a bit sad. It was struggling before the bypass, now it’s finished.

As to Pick-a-Part…

While I’m on a roll, herpetic eye lesions and blepharitis. Cannot recommend!

A&E where I’m waiting is currently tied up with a nasty workplace injury - plasterer who only speaks Chinese - his workmates have clearly been ordered in to wait together while the boss arrives, so they can synchronise their fibbing. Dodgy as, and doesn’t bode well for builder accountability in terms of construction either.

Maybe, it was done by a different mechanic. I will worry about chasing that up later, just need the car on the road.
The rad that just failed was a flokool, it was one for fpv's as there was no available rads at the time for a non turbo. It is/was significantly thicker then the factory rad that failed after 14 years...
