You are very fortunate indeed. You get to work for a fantastic company that shows it's looking after it's employees. How many people can say that their employer gave them 3 and a half years to find a job when your work runs out?

Somehow, I don't see another three years happening. With Falcon sales diminishing month by month, Ford HQ will only let the local operation bleed red ink for so long. Unless the next model is somehow a roaring success, I see management closing the doors 2 years earlier than announced today.

Agreed. The death of the Australian Valiant and Chrysler pulling out of local production is probably a more apt comparison.

I wanna drive to broadmeadows the day it shuts. A cavalcade of Falcons to see off their birth place. That would be a sight to see.

With a good advertising campaign, it could have been marketed at people considering "foreign" cars.
They should have pushed...hard...the fuel economy and cheaper running costs.
I think this is where Ford went wrong.

There's no disputing the fact that large cars aren't selling, perhaps because of the view that they're heavy, thirsty and costs more to run, but he Ecoboost wasn't that heavy, it was nimble, and thrifty on fuel, and a great drive to boot. It's a Falcon, but not as the general public knew it.

The fact that they didn't spend more money to advertise the Falcon Ecoboost means that they had lost their opportunity to boost Falcon sales.

I like this bit:

Journalists crowded around a Holden VF Commodore, with Devereux in the front seat, listening via the car’s Bluetooth connection to the announcement that Ford will close its manufacturing operations in Australia from October 2016.

I don't really see that as funny at all. They gathered around an incredibly important car for the Australian car industry to hear about the death of another that has been so important to it. A poignant moment if you ask me.

If they weren't being forced to honor their commitments re funding for 2014 Falcon, I think you'd find them closing a lot sooner!

Oh the irony...given some of the rubbish I have read here today.

The best was definitely the suggestion we should drive Aussie made because we won the war.

As a Holden man it actually (On a genuine level) saddens me with this news, but like a family member with cancer you know the day will come.

The Falcon has been intwined within our fabric for over 50 years. I don't like them all, but it's a long and illustrious heritage any Australian should be proud of.

I'd imagine Holden will eventually follow suit. Tough times for us (the Australian product consumer I mean), but not much we can do.

I wonder how many people are making plans to buy a new Falcon before the 2016 closure now that they have announced the closure. There would be a lot of people who would have wanted to buy a new Falcon but just keep putting it off and buying used ones or waiting for the right time. I would also like to know if they plan on going out with a bang with regards to the FPV GT and maybe a GT HO. Even a limited edition XR6 Turbo with 310kw would be a fine way to farewell the XR6. This shut down needs to be about the car,the people who build the car and the loyal customer base that has stood by them year after year. It needs to be done with dignity and they have got off on the right foot by given such a long notice period.
