Got an old iphone? Get a prepaid sim for it keep it charged up when you leave your car, put it in a hidden spot and if someone takes your car the find your iphone app will lead you/cops straight to the scum

Thanks for the ideas guys. I am with shannons for third party damage but they don't offer a fire and theft option and I don't want to change insurers as they have my other insurances as well.

Jack, what you earlier proposed to do with the dash switch hooked up to the fuel relay and horn is a great idea. It wont stop grubs from getting into your ute but will stop them from taking it. What is even better with the horn idea you have is that you have a chance of catching them.

I had a VL V8 pinched years ago by opportunistic grubs who obviously did their homework on mine. I had a fuel pump kill switch but the bugger didn't work because I left the car switched on LPG overnight. I would've loved to have caught them in the act armed with my slazenger cricket bat that morning I'll tell you!!

A good alarm would do. My bronco had the most piercing alarm and motion sensors in the cab.
It went of one night early hours in the morning, i was more worried about finding the keys than if anyone was trying to steel it.

I've always wanted to install a timed kill switch.
One that allows enough time to get in to traffic before it cuts the fuel and leaves them stranded.

I figure the panic of being stuck like that would most likely result in abandonment.

As was said a couple of decades ago in a comprehensive article in Wheels magazine about car theft, Who will drive past and even look twice at some guys in overalls hooking a car up to a tow truck or putting it on a tilt-tray...?

Kill switches are pretty good...harder to do with modern cars as you don't really want to go hacking into the wiring loom without knowing exactly what you're doing.
My Celica has a car alarm, hooked to the two doors and bonnet...but oddly not to the huge rear hatch...
A friend bought me a motorcycle alarm...she said it was kind of a joke for when we moved from the little country town down to "the big smoke" of Gracemere....
I haven't put in in yet, but as well as the usual voltage-drop sensor it has a mercury switch which senses if the bike is moved, so that's not a bad idea.

Alarms...again an idea from decades ago. Someone said in an article maybe you could put the horn/siren inside the car, under the seat or under the dash if there's room...sensible given how often people hear a car alarm and just shrug and think "Huh..a car alarm" and don't do anything more.
I thought of this years later when I read an industrial catalog that had a "warning siren" that was only the size of a Coke can, 12 volt, and putting out 140dB...
Put that inside your car and no one, but no one, is going to be able to sit inside with it...more than a few seconds would be irreversible hearing damage. Just have to pray it never false-triggers while you're in there...

That's just a standard fuel cut off, that is how they work had one in a car 30 years ago.

Some of the things we used to do in the early eighties were the following which were common around Bundaberg back then...usually only if you were going to Brisbane or something...not a lot of car theft in Bundy back then...

1: Kill switch...these were very common. I had one on all our cars, usually tucked up under the dash and simply connected to the wire from the coil to the distributor.
2: Fuel cut offs of one sort of another...either a simple manual tap or an electronic switch type for the more well-heeled.
3: Take your distributor rotor out. This was a pretty damn good one...who carries around a selection of rotor buttons to suit various cars?
4: Steering wheel locks..."The Club" type things.
5: Alarms...again for the more dedicated or those with expensive cars.
6: One or two oddities...a couple of guys had quick release steering wheel type things fitted. I vaguely remember them being available in magazine adverts...but I don't think they were exactly legal.

I knew one guy who when he was going away would remove the wheels from his car and take them to a friends place...that's pretty extreme...

Had break ins in my area, Mrs car had the dodgy Ford cog and the guy tested the door handles found the one that unlocked it and nicked a brand new dash cam, a month later I was in the kitchen grabbing a drink at 130 in the morning and the guy came back, he went to my car which had the lock fixed then went to a car down the road which he also got into a month ago and went through it (they never lock the car), I chased him off and later found him down another street whole driving and followed him into the crap neighborhood he lives in, he hasn't come around since, they are usually attacks of opportunity on unlocked cars and if you have a locked car, unless they want to smash a window you're fine, the cops came quick but as I had to run home to call them they didn't catch him (I was only in boxers so didn't want to run too far from home ha-ha), put up security cameras as it was most likely the camera he saw at my house the second time round that made him keep walking without coming all the way up my driveway

You could dyna bolt a chain to the driveway and loop it through your wheel, they won't get it into a truck easily if they can't move it. And it's just a deterrent

My dad used to have a length of real heavy chain under the seat. When parked, he would loop it around the front seat mount of his XF and through the steering wheel.

There's actually a device you can buy for motorcycle security just like what you mention...it's a hardened steel eye that bolts into the floor with massive dynabolts that has a tempered steel cover so the bolts cannot be reached. Then another hardened steel chain (plastic coated so it doesn't scratch the bike paint or chrome) goes up through the frame and/or wheels and back to the shackle with a steel pin and lock in each end of the chain, again tempered steel. No reason it couldn't be used on a car, say around a suspension arm or diff...something solid. A wheel could always be removed if you put it through a spoke of the mags.

I remember advertising some years back for a steel frame that bolted in to the garage floor and had a similar principal...you drove your car in over it and then rose it up and locked it into position behind your vehicle, making it unable to be towed out.

I used to do to take the rotor button out of my coupe and my fairlane when I had those. Was a good trick. I still like my electronic idea, but I realised I dont know enough about electronics to make it work, and Jaycar wont tell me anything. Apparently I have to pay someone to prototype a circuit.

Quite a few years ago I was reading of some who owned one of the early GTHO's .
Apparently he fitted a smoke flare under the passenger seat, if you didn't flick the correct switch within 60sec of starting the car the flare would go off.

He never had the car completely stolen (found a few hundred yards away it seems) but had to replace the carpets 3 times

This *might* be a little odd, and probably only work if you were prepared to run after whoever has got your car.... You can get little tags for your dogs collar that link to your smartphone, and you can set a pre-determined boundary, ie: your house fenceline, driveway, etc,so if you dog leaves the preset boundary, you get a text message immediately saying your dog has gone awol.... cant see why you couldnt hide a tag in your car.
I looked into this for a friend whos dog was impossible to contain. Kinda like the trackers they use on pig dogs but waaay smaller. Prob only good for a ten second heads up its on its way out the driveway/shed tho... :/

Herc-alloy chain and lock box assy. Plasma cutter needed or huge hydraulic bolt cutters. Lock box 6mm wall 100mm square tube about 150mm long weld one link inside the tube wrap the chain around what you want to keep and preferably an RSJ, telegraph pole, house pier etc.. and put the other end inside the box and fit abloy lock. I suggest at least 15mm dia. links or larger. What ever you locked up should be there when you return. (Lock box prevents bolt cutters being used on lock).
Herc alloy is lifting chain or heavy vehicle recovery equipment very hard to cut. Bigger diameter links the better but too big a link and you won't pick it up …lol.. they drag broken D10 dozers with this stuff.

Add some artificial dents, etc so it's not so valuable ..
