'98 tp XP was a little taxing by comparison, but I think Vista outweighs that effect. Pardon the pun.

i pitty those using the basic version... it slows the computer just asmuch but without the ONLY good effects that vista has.

Not everyone went from 98/98SE to 2000 to XP (or even with ME in that sequence of events). Most people didn't have the resources to do so.

Personally I like Vista....a lot. However, as a tech I needed to be objective, and did make the jump back to XP until I felt the minor issues were addressed. Hopefully that will happen with SP1. Mainly, I feel it is too much of a memory hog.

I specced up and bought a new lappie in late October last year, giving it 1Gb of 667Mhz RAM, with a 1.83Ghz Core 2 Duo, and a 256Mb (dedicated) ATI 1600. I was surprised to find that it was a slug coming out of most applications, and took forever to shut down (although boot up was quite fast).

The really odd thing I found was that I never.....EVER.....had issues with IE7 under XP, but it crashed regularly under Vista, though once again I expect that to be resolved with SP1.

I still have my copy of Vista and will go back to it when I'm satisfied it will respond the way I believe it should.

I will second its rubbish , alot of hardware still doesn't even work with the recommended vista updates for that particular piece of hardware. I gave it about a week, then uninstalled it and put xp pro back on again , then turfed vista in the bin !.

My sis just bought a new Toshiba with Vista.

I'm not a fan to be honest. I would expect it to be similar in look to the previous versions (bit like Nokia phone menu's), but with better performance, and of course more options should people want them.

The file / folder viewing is not easy to follow, and I tried to do do a basic function like copy some mp3 files off a cd to her computer, and I kept getting an error saying that I was missing a file in word?.. now what Word has to do with moving mp3 files is beyond me...

Bit like the new hotmail format to be honest. Heaps of people hate the new look, but I guess after 6 months people with Vista won't even remember what XP looked like.

However i'll be staying with XP for now.

Xp ran faster than 2000 on the same hardware.. and was am improvement straight away..
Vista does have some nice stuff.. but 'nice stuff' is what Apple has allways relied on.... people always realise three weeks later that you can't actually do anything with their apple other than surf the net and make pretty pictures.

Vista has become serious bloatware.. with 700 + megabytes being allocated just to start up.. and even then another 15 seconds to open up basic dialogues such as the control panel or even my computer..

Apples have their Benefits - I use a PC but id rather have a dual 3.0ghz processor mac for sound editing and producing

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista and had many problems.

Well where do I start with my Vista problems:

*Wireless dissconected for no reason and the only way to fix it was to restart the computer.

*Slow to open any type of windows.

*Would reset and bring up the dreaded "blue screen of death" for no reason.

*DVD software I use to record TV didnt work properly.

I just changed back to XP and have had no problems at all.

I remember my first computer was a Pentium 200mhz with 32mb of SDRAM, a 2mb Video card and 2gb Quantum HDD, Installing Windows was a 3 hour job and 10 years ago when I got it, It was considered a big deal.

Now days Video card processors are 800mhz and can calculate 500 000 trillion pixels in 1/5 of a second.

Computer's have evolved at an astonishing compounding rate, its almost scary, it makes you wonder how advanced they will be in the next 10-20 years and what new roles they will play in Society.

Was the Terminator series just entertainment or a Vision into the future ?

But as far as no software is just not true nowdays, there is hardly any programs that i need windows for. and well gaming should be done on a console anyway, but even so the developers are starting to embrace OSX as a gaming platform.

Starting? Well, they're only about 15 years behind.

PC gaming and console gaming are completely different.

i am totally opposite to most

i have this computer ( desk top ) that is running xp

and it is a piece of crap cant do windows downloads

i also have a lap top that is running vista

and it is great no probs what so ever

This'll only end in tears. I use a Mac at home too, however you learn to keep your mouth shut quick in these situations...

My Work Lappy has Vista Professional (I think) on it. I was given the machine about a week ago, and haven't had any serious problems with it yet. Once I got over how different it was to XP, I was fine. I just don't get one thing - why is My Computer called 'Computer'? I spent the best part of an hour looking for the My, before I clicked on the Computer. If only I could get my head around Office 2007, then I'd be fine.

I definately don't Hate Vista. You just have to have a fiddle, and get the hang of it, and you will be fine. It doesn't take long. For the Mac users - like going from OS 9 to OS X.

for experimental sake i just installed vista ultimate again...

core 2 duo, 1 gig ram (will upgrade in coming weeks) but ill see if after this amount of time it works. i already ran into small issues but nothing worth bitching about

I have vista at work and no problems.I actually think it is better..but going from IE6 to IE7 upgrade on home pc...don't even get me started!!! Bill Gates needs a punch in the face!!

This is like a time warp from 2000 - XP and all the bleating that went with that.
I have had Vista Business 64 on my main PC since about a month after launch. It's different.. it is harder on the hardware but it's fine. The only thing I had issues with was the audio card and eventually that sorted itself out too. I think 1 gig RAM is minimum, luckily it's cheap.
I run Ubuntu on an old laptop and Xp on this one and I don't have any problems with any of them. People need to embrace the change, it's going to happen anyway.

I find it to be ok, XP was better IMO, but only cause i was used to using it.

I only have two real problems at the moment.
1. One of my RAM sticks died, so its running a little slow.
2. Media Player 11 sounds like its under water after about 10-15mins of use.

I'm another Pro Vista.

I've had it and I make sure I argue constantly with anyone that tells me they've been told not to get Vista from somebody 'in the know'

Obviously they don't know .

I've had no problems finding drivers for anything, I haven't had 1 item not work due to hardware or software problems. It's not slow. It's the same to navigate as XP, the only thing that I've noticed is different is the Network Center, which I think is a good step compared to XP's labrynth.

Network and File Sharing gets a bit hairy but thats easily sorted.

Office 07 is a life saver for me, the only thing I'm not a fan of there is that nobody has 07 compatible MS offices around the place, everyone is still using 97-2003 format and everytime I save my work it has to be in that format, otherwise I turn up to work to open something and realise I have to go back home and re-save the copy.

But, with the way it displays everything, font changes, format changes, GRAPHS! the way it shows your graphs is a huge improvement, instead of going hmm I wonder what this would look like, drag your mouse across it and boom, there it is.. Displayed.

Vista and Office 07 - Do it.

well i have already ran into some issues...

FOR VISTA:
all my drivers apart from printer was installed
install was alot smoother this time around.
colours and fonts are great
AVG and other anti-virus programs more readily available
the little graph that tells you how full your HDD's are.. its cool

AGAINST VISTA:
wireless dropouts
wireless signal full strength yet windows said i was out of range.. WHAT THE!!!
file sharing... ok so i clicked the option to share it in the network but then you have another option for a closed network or some crap than you need to do otherwise no file will be shared... whats the point of the first one.

as i mentioned nothing major apart from the wireless... last night it dropped out every few seconds...

Oh i know what you mean, I was using 1gig and that was pretty bad then one of my 512 sticks died, so i threw in another 256 that was lying around and have been using 768 for the time being. Using vista ultimate and photoshop and what not sucks SO bad.

Just brought 2gig of Ram, so should be all fine once it arrives.

Was wondering whether that was just mine. Mine reguarly drops out and goes into local mode only. I then have to disconnect and reconnect.

no problems with vista for me. it came with my laptop, dual core amd with 1gb memory. close the laptop and it suspends the session, open it up, hit power and its up and running in 20seconds. on xp it used to take forever to start it up etc. i like the little visual things with vista as well. i love the option to use a flash drive as extra ram. makes a huge difference when my 2gb flash is plugged in.

i use wireless alot when i'm at school, no issues at all. even at home. it picks up the neighbours wireless as well lol

well i have had more fun with this... first up the wireless dropped out (card stopped responding) then the video card driver kept stuffing up (have had this issue with 2 video cards. all current and vista compatable.

then last but not least the CD drive stops working, light flashed but wouldnt eject... rebooted 3 times hitting the button just after boot up and right through and still nothing.

Your cd drive problem shouldnt have anything to do with vista...It should open/close at ANY point of operating even while reading a disc. Sounds like your cd drive is busted. Maybe stripped the teeth on the motor or something. Not software related though.
