Vaseline is highly refined and acid free; Porsche even recommend its use:

It was also recommended by Porsche in maintenance training documentation for lubrication (after cleaning) of "Weatherstrips on Doors, Hood, Tailgate, Sun Roof". The publication states "…before applying a new coat of lubricant…" "Only acid-free lubricants may be used, for example: glycerine, Vaseline, tire mounting paste, etc. These lubricants should be rubbed in, and excessive lubricant wiped off with a soft cloth."[

And notice all the rubber used in fuel systems and in direct contact with all those hydrocarbons; fuel pump diaphragms, fuel lines, carburettor seals etc.

Don't tell everyone this as super cheap want to sell rubber and tyre products for $20 a bottle not a $3 jar of Vaso.

The majority of rubber used in automotive including the tyres is synthetic biggest ingredient in manufacture is oil. Like say rubber fuel lines….. but to use Vaso as lubricant on say a condom which is a natural based rubber product made of Latex that would be bad as Damo said very bad….

Does the current pass through the Vaseline etc of you coat the post first then slip everything over it and tighten? I don't have anything on mine and don't have problems with the white powder on any of my cars, especially my Wife's SS that thing eats batteries well before any powder can form!!!

Ive done the exact same thing on a 253 after a rebuild, Couldn't get oil pressure off the starter, so packed the oil pump to the gills with vasoline and applied spark. Oil pressure spiked, I gave it a solid rev and she was steady for ever after

Still gets around in a Stephens flat bottom at 60mph no worries. Sure did take a leap of faith giving it that rev though!

There are of course placed where Vaseline or any mineral-oil greases or greases based on synthetic hydrocarbons should not be used. One particular case is elastomers used with brake fluid (especially polygylcol based) as in that situation in contact with the fluid it will cause substantial swelling of the elastomers and likely brake failure (a small amount - less than 10% is actually desirable and this is achieved through the brake fluid and its additives). And generally if there is a special lubricant available for a particular purpose, it should be used over Vaseline or any other general purpose lubricant.

Yes; Vaseline does dissolve pure latex so there some risk if used as a personal lubricant with a latex condom (but the Pope may approve). Also note on Page 41 of this document http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rc...xgW9IHrI-F9WKA BTR recommend the use of Vaseline on the transmission sump gasket. It is often recommended in such situations as it provides a temporary adhesion with some improved sealing and once heated any excess is dissolved harmlessly into the transmission fluid. It's also water repelling. Similarly, when used to prime an oil pump it will dissolve harmlessly into the oil once the oil gets warm. Generally where fuel, oil or similar natural oil based products are involved Vaseline is a safe assembly lubricant for elastomer/rubber parts and seals.

At the end of the day what we are trying to do is keep oxygen away from the terminals. Most of the above will do that and so most work.
You clamp your terminals, metal to metal, then coat to keep oxygen away.

Worst stuff evar. Cause it’s fuel based you can’t wash it off hands, body parts and any body hair easily. Water just beads on it necessitating a lengthy and decent scrub in the shower. Found this out when I was 16.

I can't say I have used it or any other lubricant on those bits but it seems it was a common domestic application pre 1960's before more specialised replacement products came along (all the sex education books I was given in the 1960's as a teenager referred to it) and, as it is one of those readily available products that most people have in their bathroom cupboards, it apparently still gets called into service by some people when an urgent need arises and nothing more suitable is on hand. Lots of discussion on the Internet of the pros and cons and it does seems that the cons outweigh any pros.
