Just for comparisons sake the Merc C350 sedan starts about 4 grand less than the 4.6 Genesis in America.
In Aus the Merc seems to be about 90K+.

If it is sold for anymore than $55,000ish Hyundai can forget it, who in their right mind wouldn't buy an SS or GS or make the leap to a EURO

Any one of the majority of new car buyers in Australia who currently do not buy falcadores as well as a few who are sick of the "undocumented features".

Have you ever actually driven a high end Hyundai? They are not the low build quality plasticy bubbles that they were years ago. They also come with a 5 year unlimited km warranty and tend to hold much better resale value than our domestic offerings.

Drive a late model high spec Hyundai and then get back to us. Even the mrs 07 Elantra Elite has brilliant build quality. 4 years old and 80k and it feels and looks like it has just come off the showroom floor.

i doubt you`d be seeing the genesis competing for speed honors at the track with our locals, hy undies is targeting the upper market cars , bmw5 series, lexus, benz etc, etc, no doubt with the 8 speed and 5.0 it will still be quick, and like the ford 5.0, it`s 5.0 is also on wards 10 best engines list, it`s a good effort on the part of hyundai to come from korean pos car manufacturer some years ago, to making decent cars in a short time.

I highly doubt that buyers of prestige Euro brands would ever consider a Hyundai, no matter how good it is.

Would they have considered Toyota or Nissan a few years ago?

Before Lexus and Infinity ripped a big hole in their US markets of course......

Im not really convinced the US market psotion for this will translate to here. Alot of sports cars that are sold both there and here dont share relativity in the market. Judging from reactions here though it would seem if they had the content to back it up, they would be better off chasing sales being a falcadore competitor than being a euro competitor

Yes indeed...the comment from a big wig in the V8 Supercars arena many moons ago springs to mind...when a couple of other makers asked about being let in with thier factory V8 engined cars. I believe Lexus might have been one but some European brand springs to mind as well.
He angrily said "We've built this formula from the ground up and I'm buggered if any newcomer is going to get a free ride!", or words to that effect.

In other words, they were absolutely terrified of a rerun of the Godzilla R32 Skylines thrashing the lump old V8's using technology and upsetting the great unwashed...

But I wouldn't bother anyway as I couldn't care less.

Crize and captiva were probably GM test cars.

Don't see the problem with Korean products; they mean a great deal to Holden.

Hyundai will do well with this. Their only hurdle is the image, and as others have mentioned, it won't be long before they're accepted as being "up there".
I don't think they're after the locals' market share, either.

good news for car enthusiasts, having another choice in the market. not good for ford and their diminishing loyalists as this hyundai could cut into its sales.

that wouldnt happen in the current v8 supercar era. godzilla r32 would not
have dominated if it was forced to use the same engine specification as the "lump old v8s" instead of turbocharged engines.

they could easily let other manufacturers in to the sport now and make them run 5litre v8s like ford and holden, but at the moment they dont need to, as they are making enough money anyway.

the v8 series is one of the best in the world, in the 80s it was one of the best touring car series because it allowed such different engine calibrations, and allowed unlimited boost turbos to take on what you call lumpy v8s. the v8 teams were actually more impressive then the turbo teams to be able to beat them and keep up with them for so long. there is no "embarresment" there, it is just commonsense the the turbos would eventually beat them which they did. the sport then took the smart choice to make it a spec series, which created better racing as the cars were closer in performance, and it was also a smarter marketing move, as most aussies love the character of a lazy lumpy v8 engined car, rather then that of a drony asian turbo car that needs to be revved hard.
dont forget v8s could have had turbos too, please judge each car on their merits, not on stupid "Godzilla R32 Skylines thrashing the lump old V8's using technology" talk. that kind of trash talk shows you are not a car enthusiast but rather a car snob.

That was far more interesting than an endless procession of Falcon/Commodore/Falcon/Commodore/etc...

Anyhoo, back to the Hyundai. They sure have come a long way...I remember the first adverts for them in the American science magazine "OMNI" in the early eighties...this was before the Hyundai brand was sold in Australia. The two page advert had a street scene of two similar houses, with one driveway housing an anonymous large American sedan, and in the other driveway a "his and hers" pair of those real early boxy Excel hatchbacks. The tag line of the advert said "Why buy one car when for the same price you can have one for you and one for your wife?", with a price over each vehicle, about $12,000 over the big Yank sedan, and something like $5400 over each of the Hyundai hatchbacks.

Car industry should become like the computer industry. Same non-visible components with just the exterior/interior unique to the manufacturer. Ford should stick to just design/interior/panel work which they are pretty brilliant at (only Ford could have turned AU into BA) and bolt it onto a generic bare RWD skeleton from the likes of Hyundai. Problem solved.
