And what's more the US fuel economy figures on that engine (16/24 mpg) are no better than that achieved by the V8 Pontiac G8. The 5 series also has around 75 mm less shoulder room and rear leg room and that before we even start on the price of the Bimmer... |

If Holden can find 100kg of weight saving on an existing platform without something silly like a starfire in the engine bay, I'll eat my hat.
Thats no empty threat, I'll record a youtube clip of me, a dinner plate, knife and fork enjoying a cotton/polyester hat.

I dont know of any automotive company that wouldnt focus on reducing vehicle weights as a principle R+D objective.
For anyone to claim otherwise simply because they didnt come out and directly state it is simply silly. Holden claiming they're focusing on reducing weight is like them claiming they're trying to sell cars...... Its pointing out the obvious...

Ford worked on dropping weight on the FG (hence why it only went up very little when it was released). I also believe the AU was lighter then the EL.

I'm pretty sure all cars will be looking at weight loss, you know to save fuel and the earth. Except for American cars. They probably don't care. They are probably trying to add weight. Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ weighs only 1800kgs. And that's a 'luxury' mid-size 4x4 with a V8 engine. It weighs the same as a Falcon or Commodore sedan. I'm sure Ford and Holden will manage to knock a fair few kgs off their next model. |

Holden has been saying the Commodore will shed weight since before VE came out, it never happened, in fact their new spate of interior techno crap probably added a bit of weight. Removing weight will cost money and as we all know Holden/HSV are damn near broke.
But let's get serious. Maybe if HSV rip off those goofy vents, spoilers, gills and DRLs they might see a decent weight loss |

An E63 AMG (about the same size as a Falcon) weighs in at 1840kg which is pretty much the same as a new HSV GTS or FPV GT... I don't expect much weight saving being achieved by manufacturers these days, especially when there's so much emphasis being placed on vehicle safety. The current M3 is a prime example, BMW where really hoping to shave weight with the 4.0Litre V8 being lighter than the outgoing 3.2L straight-six and standard CF roof...it didn't happen, the E92 weighed in at 1655kg. That's right, a new 2-door M3 is only 50kg lighter than a base model FG !! Surprisingly, the current M5 weighed the same as their outgoing E39 M5 (5L V8), which isn't bad when you consider their 5L V10 weighs 240kg. While I do agree the current E-class and 5-series are lighter than our Aussie-made cars, they are also smaller in dimensions.

Is there actually a link of some sort to this declaration by HSV? I scanned the thread and couldn't find anything.

onto the next weight loss iteration evaporated with G8's $215 million loss... No doubt Holden will lose weight eventually but I think both Ford and Holden are doing it tougher than either likes to confess... |

You guys really don't get it do you......
Up until this month HSV had a HEAVY reputation as being the HEAVY hitter in the Australian sports saloon arena. Now the new coyote GT has been released that huge burden has been aquired by FPV taking all the WEIGHT of that responsibility. Some have stated that the new FPV is ugly and not even close to as wonderful as HSV so FPV as a company have taken the moral responsibility to ensure that during any drag race the period of time you can see the FPV is much less than the time you can see the HSV allowing you to drool over its stylish looks as it flounders down the track while the FPV enthusiasts are forced to gather around the FPV vehicle which has already returned to the staging area ready for the next run..... |

Nothing good will come of this,
Holden only had to win one race, the only one that matters in Australia.... and they did that yesterday..... |

You are aware that the majority of car buyers in Australia think Bathurst used to be a race track or something back the olden days. |
