I finally made a purchase.
Didnt really clean up on this one, but i could get out of it in the clear if i needed to thanks to a 15k price reduction on what was already a pretty reasonable price.
Its definitly a buyers market at the moment. And if the mrs hadnt fallen totally in love with the car aswell i think i couldve sunk the heels in and got another 5k off it, although at the risk of losing it.

Probably the most frustrating thing you always see with aussie muscle is the genius that blows apart a good car over a weekend, strips the paint off it with a grinder, then puts it outside for a year and loses/sells/breaks all the hard to get parts. Then they reckon theyve done you a favour by doing "most of the hard work". "Just needs floors" etc. And the good old "too many projects, dont have time" when its obvious they ran out of talent and cant work out how to put it back together.

Another good one I always see with rust buckets is 'easy fix'

In the 80's I was looking at buying a XY GT HO Ph3, the car was sitting in storage on blocks in mint condition in a 'wog' mansion in Greystanes. Asking price was $20,000ono, the Greek guy that owned it had just retired and was going to Greece.

I was single, earning almost drug money working at Clyde Oil refinery, had the cash sitting in my bank account and then some.

My father went mental, 'why would you buy a 20K rust bucket' (his words not mine, there was no rust). Even though I was an adult I respected his opinion and bought a Mazda 323 instead.

Back in 2003ish I'd been working a couple of years and had a reasonable 1st car daily and some cash in the bank, started looking at cars, XY GT Replicas and V8 Torana Replicas all in the 7k range, Dads only advice was get whatever you want as long as it is legitimate (ie not replica), ended up with my unrestored Valiant Pacer Hardtop and still driving it these days with my son, turned out to be decent advice.

That's a sign of the current market for sure. Things will get worse in that price bracket as well I think.

After watching the latest auction on grays online last night, I now have to agree, the classic car market has crashed. There is no money anywhere atm and understandably considering what is going on in our country atm.. Just about every car going up on the auctions atm are not only not making reserve, they are not getting anywhere near reserve…..
Great time to buy I guess…..

I talked with a lot of sellers, made good offers etc, one bloke said "I agree its crashed, but most people with high dollar classics dont need the money".
A fair point and the exact attitude i came up against multiple times.

Im not sure but i dont think they charge if it doesnt sell, so theyll just run it through again and again. That is what i seen anyway. Same crap over and over again.

Yes so you need to find the seller that is holding on for no good reason, a bloke selling one of multiple cars sitting in the shed probably doesnt care much.

Cars are the start, it will be interesting to see where this all goes but people for the moment seem to be hanging on. I dont know how in some cases.

At a macro level trends here generally lag the US by several months unless there is some sort of economic shock happening in one place or the other

Most of the enthusiasts I know don't spend any time worrying about the perceived value of their cars, they own them outright and are just busy enjoying them for what they are, a piece of nostalgia and escapism.

For me parts have slowed down alot. I had a stocktake and clearout recently. I listed up a heap of hard to find Cortina GT stuff at cheap prices (I'm happy to help out others with projects)
I haven't had a single bite on things that would have flown out the door a couple of years ago. I'm also noticing alot of other bits sitting online for weeks or until the ads presumably expire.

Haha, that's nothing, I still think about the XY GT HO, I was 19 and working in the oil refinery earning crazy $$ living at home, Had just crashed / written off an XB GS Coupe (not my fault) and was looking for a car.

Looked at a GT HO owned by a Greek bloke wanting to sell for 20K, I had the cash in the bank, dad said you are not bringing another shoebox into the house. Get a proper car, so I ended up buying a Mazda 323 to keep dad happy.
