As well as the obvious Angry Birds games, I've got another addictive game called Abduction, where you have to jump up platforms to the top without falling. Quite fun. I've got it on my HTC Desire

HTC Wildfire and HTC Aria (work phone) - both on 2.2

Must have - sms pop up
Free. does what it says, you can then reply direct from the pop up rather than having to go into msgs.

Beautiful widgets free or paid - gives you a weather, location and time widget.

Seesmic - if you use twitter, its probably the best android based twitter ap

F1.com - free - if you love F1 like me, you can get live timing.

Trip View (lite or paid) very spot on cityrail ap - if sadly you need to catch trains to work...

got a HTC last week...desire or legend, cant remember. last thing i needed was to see this thread :-) now i will spend even less time working at work :-)

have downloaded a few of the suggested apps already.

I find it handy to search apps on the pc and to queue them for install on your phone for the next time you sync.

That one looks similar to what I can do with the one I got called "More Icons Widget".

And damn good work on the QR code - in fact, everyone sharing apps here should put up a QR code. Just paste the URL of the app into a generator, http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ - and share the QR - we then only have to snap the thing with the code readers on our phone and whammo, we're there!

One has 6 legs.

All widgets are apps, but not all apps are widgets. A widget is always running, an app requires you to run it by clicking an icon etc (obviously you can switch a widget off too). I kind of think of widgets like a batch file or shortcut or similar which auto function like weather updates. Time saving apps, as in no need to go to menus and find the icon and click it do whatever it is the app does. If the widget is running it just keeps doing what it does in the background, and maybe displaying data..

Something like that anyway.

Or in auto speak, a widget is the auto parking feature of some cars. While an app is just a steering wheel, you got to do it yourself everytime you want it done.

My wife has gone from a N95 to Desire this week to, so thanks for asking the stupid question. We were not too sure ourselves .hahahhaha

I myself have jsut bough a Tesltra Smartouch, cheap as , and perfect for my needs

Check out post 37 by Jason71, pretty much the big clock with weather and date is an example of a Widget. ie always open and displaying.
And, the icons below are the apps, you actually have to press them to open them up.

aha, i'm not that game, battery is bad enough stock! Had a little play with a dev rom, ported from the new sensation with sense 3.0 some pretty cool stuff in there, bloody slow though.

I'm tossing up the idea of running Ubuntu (Gnome GUI) on the phone, saw an article on it and thought it might be fun, however I'm not sure how 'user friendly' it would be.

Also, whoever mentioned the "Drag Racing" game, I hate you, haven't stopped playing it since I downloaded it! Stuck on level 8 at present.

LOL. I am also an addict. Its insane how much battery life I chew through to play this game.

'root' is a linux term for what is basically a superuser profile.
To 'root' your phone is to gain 'root' access.
You do this so you can modify system files that you would normally not have access to.

"Rooted" is root access within Unix which is comparable to administrator access in Windows. Allows full control of the file system on the phone. If you've never come across the term then it's unlikely you'll need to bother with it on your phone. There's a lot of freedom within Android's OS so 99.9% of users won't need to do it. It's not like jailbreaking an iPhone which allowed you to do the most fundamental things that Apple didn't want you to do.

I rooted mine to stick a modified ROM - Froyo about 6 months before Telstra released it. Also one of the backup programs I use requires it.

For HTC Desire HD, stick it in your computer (not your pants) then execute some code... BAM! Rooted phone. (almost as simple as that)

For GalaxyS users with 2.1 or 2.2 there's an app in the market called z4root. It will do the work for you.

LOL I made that picture fit my screen exactly then handed it to my wife and told her something was wrong with the phone as every time I try and use an app the whole screen is frozen and moves around....

Ah thanks. So a Widget helps flatten the battery all the time, while an App only uses battery when started!

Pretty much, and in many cases will also increase data usage.

Ive had a few rooted phones, none of them had android either.
