Funny I used one of those Pregios as a delivery van for just over 10 years.Pretty agricultural and gutless, but it did run up 420,000 kms, with very few problems.Couple of alternators, starter solenoid contacts and a set of disc pads at about 280,000.Finally died because of a blown headgasket or cracked head

And in other news last month:

Australia produced more cow**** than Black Truffles,
Big-macs outsold Fillet Mignons, etc.

Your average punter, when buying a car, will buy the cheapest shiniest pos that has Apple Carplay.

And lets be honest, "beating Ford" doesn't really amount to much these days.

Kia is not a newcomer to Australian buyers, it and Hyundai have built up a solid
reputation of reliability and services that don’t cost an Armand a leg.

So yeah, you’re now seeing second and maybe third generation buyers flock to
their products and that’s mostly because of all the things they have done right
by customers for at least a decade or more. A reasonably priced product that
checks most boxes is always going to get decent sales, the hard part for Ford
is transferring buyer attitude from Ranger, Everest and Mustang to what should
be volume selling products, that is where Ford needs to do more work convincing
buyers to pay more for better products. Offering more products wouldn’t hurt…..

Their 7 year warranty is a huge selling point. If anyone comes after that they will go longer.

Pure speculation on my part but look at Kia and Hyundai’s history. They are sister companies and share development costs.

I'm not convinced it is even close to coming here. The language used by Kia execs when asked about it has really thrown cold water on it coming here any time soon. It's still years away if it actually exists.

They have come a long way,
I wonder if its because Hyundai offer the iLoad/iMax vans they don't tread in that market

You can’t have it both ways mate, in one breath you say that the Koreans have
steadily improved their products versus the competition and then refer to them

They’re actually not that bad, I can get more comfortable in a Sportage than
in anything Mitsubishi or Toyota, I’d gladly own a CX-5 but not fussed on Honda.

Commercially, they had sucess with KIA buses and trucks, the bus was a Mazda T3500 body with a Toyota Coaster-like front clip and used the Mazda/Perkins diesel.

Hyundai can currently lay claim to one of the most expensive recalls in history...every one of their electric cars are having to have their batteries replaced due to fire risk.

Oh, and 150000 Tuscons and Sportages in Australia have just been recalled also for fire risk in the abs wiring.
They advised people to park away from homes and buildings until they are fixed, Umm that's not exactly practical.

No manufacturer is perfect.

Long bow to draw - most expensive EV recall. I think GM Holds most expensive actual recall with their faulty airbags and another for their ignition issue.
The actual recall here is due to the LG batteries which is what the cost is for, each is around 11k to replace, multiply that by the number of cars (not huge) and there is the "most expensive recall."
I suspect it will hurt Hyundai in the reputation stakes but the actual cost of replacing will likely be paid for by LG or at least a share of that cost.

That's a bit like saying the Focus gearbox issues had nothing to do with Ford, it was a getrag issue.
(And if you look into it, the battery manufacturer is claiming its a hyundai software issue, not the batteries) .

"In a statement to Automotive News USA, the battery company claimed Hyundai “misapplied LG’s suggestions for fast-charging logic in the battery management system” and said the battery cell “should not be seen as the direct cause of the fire risks”.

However, South Korea's transport ministry claimed some defects had been found in certain battery cells produced by LG’s factory in China.

While Hyundai and LG appear to be in dispute over the cause of the fault, it is likely both brands will need to foot the enormous recall repair bill."

https://www.caradvice.com.au/928558/...-to-fire-risk/

As I indicated, likely both will foot the bill. In the end if it is found LG have made the error then it will be Hyundai seeking compensation from them.

In My opinion, The thing that has earnt KIA a huge amount of Goodwill here in Australia. Is;
they don't go out of their way to weasel out of each & every Warranty Claim the way that Ford (& others) Do...

If you look at the statistics regarding warranty returns they are near the top with the least warranty issues.

Bettering Lexus, BMW and MB if I recall?

Having a well built product resulting in fewer warranty issues must have something to do with it? Right?

You are wrong about ford trying to get out of paying warranty. 8 years ago, maybe. But they have learned their lesson and are happy for dealers to fix the cars or even attempt to fix them and actually pay them. From personal experience I can tell you they are currently far better than some other manufacturers. Don’t believe everything John Cadogen says. He’s living in the past.

But the way they acted 8 years ago has stuck for many people. Buying a new car is most often the second largest purchase a person makes and to be treated the way they were isn’t easy to get buyers to move on from.

To clarify, this is the fault of the dealers too. Westpoint Ford were terrible to deal with while Rex Gorell Ford went out of their way to make a deal happen. Guess it depends which dealer is lucky (or unlucky) enough to experience.

I have to support this, my last two warranty claims were more about me making time to get the cars back or waiting for a loan vehicle to be available. The actual approval by Ford for the dealer to go ahead was the easy part. In fact one claim was picked up by the dealer during a service which we never realised.

This is true. Ford have made huge efforts to improve in this area. They know their previous efforts were **** poor and has cost them sales. It's been one of their highest priorities for a number of years now. It's worked too, going off the most recent customer satisfaction surveys that had Ford at the top along with Mazda.

Should have been done long before that though. But you can't change the past.

it is almost certainly the dealer experience that has a big factor with the whole experience. The dealer I bought my Falcons from bent over backwards to help me with the ongoing issues i had with them. They even absorbed the cost to replacing components that were a few months out of warranty. When the dealer changed ownership and key staff left so did the service. I never bought another Ford after my Focus.
My father bought a RS from them, when it came time for a warranty claim on an issue with the tailgate they refused on the grounds the label on the tail gate didn't have Focus RS on it. They accused my father of changing the tailgate to a standard Focus one (never been in accident or had a claim on it). After a lot of discussion they agreed to fix the issue under warranty.

We should also remember that Ford switched to a proper automatic in focus six years ago
and while that doesn’t completely erase the stink of Powershift, it went a long way towards
putting it in the rear view mirror. By now, most Powershift Focus are on 2nd or 3rd owners
and now being resolved.

OK, I stand corrected regarding Ford..

But the Point i was trying to make Is..
KIA's aftersales support of Their Product & in Particular their No quibble 7 year warranty. have earnt them a large amount of Goodwill among the car buying Public..

as cheap shiny merchandise.
There was a time when if you wanted build quality, it had to be German.
Then the Japanese made up a lot of ground, and due to their relatively cheaper pricing, become the goto choice.

I still find that on average (Western) European cars are better, but as I said, so many "European" cars are now coming out of Asia anyway.

Now even many of the "Japanese" models are actually built in Thailand, so Hyundai quality is at least as good, if not better.

Kias ARE cheap (as in inexpensive) and that appeals to the market.
As for whether they're a "good car" or even "good value" depends entirely on your definitions and personal perspective.
They clearly deliver a lot of what many people want, and do it in an affordable manner.

They've also been very clever with their warranties and servicing. You can now buy a new car, keep it for 7(?) years, throw it away when you're done, and never have to worry about repairs

Did you know Kias and Hyundai’s are essentially the same? Same platforms, same motors, same tech with different styling and (to a point) specs?
