That would be your best defence. If the signs were obstructed by a truck or bus or something, how could you be expected to know that the limit was 40. If that is the case then I would dispute the fine. It is obviuos that you were not hooning since you were only doing 50 in what you thought was a 60 zone. This is the problem with speed camera's, they are dumb as planks and are only meant to be a source of revenue.

OWNERSHIP

Try living in Vic where you dont get the 3 warning signs and when you actually "Drift" over the speed limit by 3 kph you get done. 10kph is a little bit too much. I dont agree with the way governments approach the whole camera thing but still if you speed you have to exspect to get caught.

For the record I normally speed (a little) and I have not had a ticket for a few years (touch wood!) but if I do speed AND I get caught then I have to cope it on the chin, like you should.

I live and work around the corner from there, if your coming from the city most cars are doing 70+kms on the bend getting to the camera, visibility for signage is not the best nor is the fact that everyone's going pretty fast around the bend being a main road, before you hit the cameras.

It's funny how they haven't put cameras on Gardeners Road, (school is on corner between the two main roads.)simply because there are a set of lights before you get to the school which by that time your only doing 40-50kms max and won't be speeding on approach, this is where there is the main entry and exit point for the kids and vehicles that's where the camera really should be. Where the camers are there are no entry or exit points to the school which makes it obvious that it's there to make the cash and not protect the kids at that school including my nieces.

In Roseberry where there is a lot of 40km/h 24 hrs.
The one which i know a lot of people who get caught is where RTA is,
i think it is Rothchild Ave where IBM used to be and RTA is just across the road.

I have seen a cop was there and within an hour he have got over
30 people doing over 40km/h some even doing 80km/h!!!

Well signs regardless, its safe to say that you should slow down to 40 between the times of 8:00am – 9:30am and 2:30pm – 4:00pm near any school just to be on the safe side. I'd just pay the fine and move on seeing you were going over (regardless if you could see the signs or not).

I know that spot and yes it should be at least 50k zone, unfortunately there are alot of 40 zones all day with no schools in site.

I agree wholeheartedly. I may do the odd km or so over the limit on the open road, but in 40 zones (school zones), I make sure I am doing 40 before the sign, and don't speed up to 60 again until I reach the 60 sign. I have 3 young kids, so I drive through school zones as if it were one of my 4 year olds who went to that school - they would have no idea of road safety (well some, but not as much as someone who is old enough to drive).

The problem is a lot of people haven't got kids that they have to
drive them to school everyday, so the 40km/h doesn't apply to them
as that's what they think.

Some of the people their kids have already grown up way before the
40km/h limit comes in.

I respect the 40km/h zone all the time during school hrs.
After school hours is a different story.

i noticed that and was going to take some photos of the other direction, but it was dangerous enough getting the ones i did so left it at that.at one school i passed recently there where kids that had got off the bus not five meters from the crossing and in a very dangerous manner dodged all the cars going at forty to get to the other side .going at forty allows these (high school)kids to try and dodge between traffic making it more dangerous that if we were gonig at sixty because they could not do this so easily at 60 and would have to wait till the cars had passed.has anyone else experienced this or wot? and a couple of weeks back i had 2 stupid high school aged girls on mobiles step straight on to the road in front of me without looking whatsoever.luckily for them i was watching.should,nt they be the ones watching.it is their life after all.

Don't assume the authorities are always right, because some motorists questioned their "speeding" tickets the cameras on the Ring road were found to be inaccurate and eventually shut down till the problem was fixed. The Victorian Govt had to be dragged kicking and screaming before they would admit there was a fault in their system. A lot of people had their fines refunded, lost licences and points regained. If in doubt question.
cheers
Bill.

If all those people in the photos aren't getting their photo taken during school times (I don't know for a fact they aren't, but highly doubtful)...it can't be that hard not to speed in the school zone...funny how the signs are hard to see but other people manage fine....is it the first time you have travelled along that road? If it was, I can almost understand...if it's a regular route...come on...take it on the chin.

Oh man, this happened to me yesterday coming home from work. Except i'm in a 40 year old car with non power assisted drums all round and can't really pull up quick! I knocked off early from work to get some stuff done on the car and drove *near* a school (not near, so it's still 60 or 80k on that part of the road), 3 girls just walked straight out in front of me without looking and then acted like it was my fault?! I gave them a good piece of mind.

Then driving back home there were two little tackers (prob 5 or 6) sitting on the side of the road at a blind apex of a corner. Legs were on the road (and you hug the inside of the corner as cars coming the other way often drift into the middle of the road) and they were throwing hand fulls of pebbles in front of/at cars! I yelled at them too but felt bad afterwards.

I don't think kids are being taught anything these days :togo:

"Look Right , Look Left , Look Right Again" .... I was taught that from Kindergarten . that was 1959 (bugga , showing I'm an Old Phart) , at a small country school , part of "School Road Safety". It made the kids aware of traffic and also gave drivers time to see kids crossing . Nobody ever got hit while I was at Primary school . 35mph (60k) in those day's .

These day's some kids just walk out without looking at all , do they still teach the old rule? ...because "they have right of way".

On the other hand , a friend of our's is a "Lollypop Lady" and has been hit in the middle of the road and the limit is 40k with plenty of signage around . I'm afraid I'm at a loss as to where the the problem lies . There are 3 schools in a row , Primary school , easily seen on the left , then the crossing on the "top of a hill" (easily seen both ways) then 1+k down the hill past the other 2 schools . A clearly Marked Police car parks halfway down the hill and picks up heaps each day at 50+ . One problem is they are All on the main drag/H-way into town .

Is it lack of School Road Safety , Driver inattention , lack of signs (in some places) ?

Sorry Dave , can't comment on your prob , but is that the sign 3-4 cars down , very hard to see , specially if your watching traffic too ! If there's bigger signs further down , I don't think you'll have much luck .
There's a Big crackdown on 40k+ in school zones up here at the moment , maybe thats it .

Like I said I'm at a loss who/which one is at fault ....

It's everyone at fault in some way or another.

1) People believe it's acceptable to speed that few extra km over. then it climbs. (Me included)
2) Society is so impatient or always in a rush we are led back to point 1.
3) Children aren't taught the same values as before, like "Look Right, Look Left, Look Right Again" they believe they rule the world and that they also have the right to walk on our roads around cars. (ALthough I agree with 40k around Primary Schools/Kindergardens)
4) Goverments for pushing thier own agendas for re-election and revenue. They knew points 1 and 2 were correct, they knew parents wanted lower speed limits around schools.
5) Some parents who are to lazy to teach the values of road safety and expect road users to slow down for thier children. Who time and time again are proven to speed through other school zones, and some cases there own childs school zone.
6) Building Schools near 4 lane highways, thats a bright idea.

Speed camera - now you have been caught - i'm tipping when you come to a school zone it will remind you a hell of a lot more to slow down- and you more than likely will....
It is possible to enter some school zones without seeing a sign ie..entering from a side street. The locals may know about it, but the tourists don't.

Wouldn't you be aware enough though to think, hey that looks like a school to my left/right? Its during school zone time and I should slow down to 40 anyway without having to be told by numerous signs?

Nowadays a lot of signs have been up on side street way before
you enter the main road to tell you it is a school zone.

Officer: "Dave289, why did you run these kids over?"
Dave289: "Well officer, I was doing 40 and I'm absolutely sure of that because my eyes were fixed to the speedo when I hit them. They should have used the crossing, and in that case, you should ask them why they hit my car.... so can you give them the fine for damaging my car with the bodies... I hope these kids are insured."

Dave, I really feel your frustration especially after I just lost all my points courtesy to a new camera and the poor signs they have for it, all in the space of a few weeks lol (the stupid thing was, I was driving responsibly just like yourself - it doesn't take much to go 10 over if you're driving to the conditions instead of having your eyes fixed to the speedo...).
No advice from me champ other than to raise your hands to the heavens and prayto God The Almighty all these cameras (and the people behind them) get hit by lightning... in reality, the only thing that'll stop this MADNESS is a miracle.

I wish they'd have flashing lights at least in ALL the school zones... it'll keep it clear and keep it CONSISTENT

while looking for the school, while looking at your watch to see if its still3.59,and looking for all these signs many sometimes burried behind trucks and trees ,its amazing you have time to look at the road.

i have never been done in a school zone and this time saw no warning signs.because they were obscured someway or another.(look at the photos and possibilities of trucks covering the already covered signs).i dont know wher everyschool is thats why they have signs.but some people think that everyone should.very very unrealistic and to go on and on about what people should and should not do.

Exactly. I'm sure most people have this awareness and common sense. No need for heavy hitting fines and loss of licences. It appears the authorities have gone about this the wrong way, instead of having flashing lights to remind motorists of the potential risks and dangers ahead, they're happier to send you a ticket in the mail, as if to say "this fine has saved a kids life..."
