World leaders come and go, celebrities come and go. Different politicians and religious leaders will always have a place. But to truly have influence you need to change the way people live their lives.

My pick goes to Mark Zuckerberg.

The social media revolution, Facebook has changed Generation Y. From using social networking at home & on your phone, it even allowed for the evolution of Twitter and the re-enforcement a lot of what was established with youtube and alike, or at least gave a vehicle for these medians to became a lot more common place.

Outside of tweens, teenagers & 20-somethings updating their status daily, it's changed marketing and broadcasting. Watch any show today, and they'll ask you to " join the conversation on Facebook / Twitter "

Like Print & Radio coming before television, other social media / networks came before Facebook. Yet the ease, connectivity and simplicity made it successful. Like television to the baby boomer generation, social networking will be to Generation Y and beyond.

Only within 10-15 years people will truly understand how much Zuckerberg changed their lives. It sounds corny. But just think back to a World prior to Facebook.

Another for Mark Zuckerberg. Whether you know his name or not, or whether you have a facebook account or not is irrelevant. Facebook has changed the way the world thinks, communicates and behaves.

Facebook is the CB radio of the early 21st century. It is a fad that will go the way of Geocities, MySpace, Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo, AOL and all the other trendy chewing gum for the brain.

As this is a motor forum, how many remember when the panel van the the super cool transport of choice and the only people who drove utes were farmers and actual tradesmen?
Or when 4WDs were tractors with cabs and were never seen anywhere near schools even in the country. The world constantly changes and it is human nature for those who are directly effected by something to believe that it is a watershed and they are the way of the future.

If you really want a list of people who have changed the world:

In recent history:
Hitler
Osama bin Laden
Stalin

We are still wearing the problems and interference to freedom caused by the over reaction of bureaucrats and weak politicians to what these people have done.

Going further back is difficult as they are all religious leaders and T&C precludes this.

Yes but it was his idea to create facebook, although I do agree with flappist that it could just be a passing fad. That being said no one can deny his influence through facebook on the world today.

'Facebook' while not a person is run by people. Lets assume Mark Z still has control of the goings on in the Facebook business.

HE therefore has the ability to control what 800 MILLION people see, be it by email, message, picture, link, clip, sound file... whatever... at the stroke of a key, at any time.

Pretty powerful stuff.... sure, it may be a passing fad, but still very near the top of influential people.

But just think back to a World prior to Facebook.[/QUOTE]

Sounds like bliss...Example....My lunch room at work....6 people under the age of 25 ( all of which are tappin away on their phones or what ever ) in the room amongst 6 others who are older. The older people are talking to each other. If the older people try to talk to the under 25's, this is the response...(eyes up for a second "Hu..What?" eyes back down, continue tappin. This happens for the entire 45 minutes of lunch break.

This maybe off topic a bit, sorry. I am 38 years old

Osama Bin Laden. The world has never been the same since he orchestrated 9/11, and we will for ever feel the effects of it.

A very close second is Mark Z. Facebook isn't like MySpace, AOL, Yahoo ect. It's actually ingrained in our lives now, and while it may not always have the take up rate as it now has, it will never go away.

Facebook launched in February 4, 2004 now in 2011 have over 800 million active users.
According to Social Media Today, in April 2010 an estimated 41.6% of the U.S. population had a Facebook account.

http://roywells.com/2010/08/15/7-of-...s-on-facebook/

In 2010, with the world population estimated to be at 6.8 billion, and with Facebook reporting around 500 million accounts, the world’s population logging into Facebook calculates out to be about 7%.

Now, with 800 million active users, whats that.. roughly 11.7% of the World population in 2011.

That's pretty damn influential.
