i'd rather go from my real life example then simply comparing specs. and i wasnt beaten by a SP23, just a normal 3. show me where you've had or seen similar experiement and i'll beleive you I'm not sayin the EF will lose all the time, simply that the 3 has a bit more go in it then everyones giving it credit for.

Well owning both an SP23 sedan manual, and an EFII Fairmont Ghia Manual with extractors and Cam, I can vouch for which is faster in my stable
But compared to a stock EF, the SP23 is much more fun. However from my Garage, each has its own good points. EF - straight line car, SP23 - Hills thrash car. Why do people insist on comparing cars designed for different purposes? ie. Mazda KNOWN for good handling, Ford KNOWN for straight line and towing.

Well my wife's car is an SP23 and my previous car was an AU 111 VCT Tickford Fairmont Ghia ( now an F6 ). We live on Tamborine Mountain and I can tell you the SP23 ate the AU for breakfast going up the mountain.

i'm agreeing with EFFalcon on this one. my mum has a STOCK Manual Mazda 3 (not SP23) and i've got the ED with T5 and exhaust. when we have a run (my dad driving the mazda) we are dead even then i only just pull away in the top end. if your talking an auto falcon the stock mazda 3 will eat it up.

It heavily depends on the driver to, 1/4 falcons wins no worries, but around town on off the lights the 3 will lick you. These new 4 cyinders have alot more go than people give them credit for. Ive never really driven a hot hatch, but my GF's 2000 model Barina (thats the opel one) feels quickish off the mark when no one else is in with me. To be honest I have more fun these days zipping around in her car than mine....I really need a T5 again :

I'd go with the Mazda 3 in this instance.
However, if you are talking about a manual EF in the right hands then the Falcon will win but an auto falcon will get beaten by a manual mazda 3. Just like EFFalcon said, I also go by real world experience rather than "on paper" comparisons. |

Mazda 3 Neo manual weighs a minimum of 2214kg if we want to be more technical....
I'd put money on the Mazda. |

Dad has a Mazda 3 and I drive it around a fair bit. If you think you can easily beat one youd be surprised. They are bloody quick. Dads is the 3 maxx so it has slightly bigger tyres as well. Just that little bit more traction.
I had a short run with an ef/l xr8 entering onto roe highway from great eastern (turning left up the bridge for those who know the area) and i was infront of him untill I slowed at 110 and he kept going. Sure down the quarter the falcon would probably win, but on the street I think thanks to the gearing (talking manual here) I think many a time the falcon would get beaten. |

I own a new model manual Focus, before that I came out of a EF 4L auto
Now considering the 2.0 Focus and 3 2.0 Engines are the same (Mazda has VCT, where the Focus has 107kw from a cam to suit 2500+rpm power), on the quarter mile it would be very very close. 0-130 Focus way out front, due to the close ratio gearbox (100kmh is around 3000rpm) as well as a peaky powerband (power from 2500 to 6000+), whereas the Falcon after 130 starts reeling in the Focus due to having more torque around the rev range. Depending on the driver it can go either way. |

You'd be surprised at how nimble a manual 3 is. My mate did a track day with his 3 at Sandown and was posting lap times within a few seconds of a modded XR6T (220rwkw). As you'd expect the T would eat him down the straights but the 3 could brake later and hold more speed through the corners. Having been in the thing i can tell you it sticks to the ground very very well. EF vs 3? In the twisties the 3 would most likely win but straight line might be a different story..

If you think the Mazda3 is good now, well apparently there is a Mazda3 MPS comming out. 184kw and 0-100 in 6.1 secs. Mazda sure knows how to build a car. I should know how good, I own one and it's a ripper. I hope the MPS is not to expensive cause I will get one if I can afford it.

AWD territory vs mazda 3 auto
Territory 1 mazda none ;) done at a private race track x3 just to make sure...:P in manual he would have eaten me alive i have driven a few to know how these things go, and in SP23 would wave bye bye to any stock falcon and give an ef xr6 auto a hurry up.

the mazda 3 mps is due sometime in the next month or two, and will be around 40 grand, little less then the xr5 turbo...
wont be 4wd though, so imagine the torque steer... unless theyve done something about it... |

id reakon technology difference doesnt always matter. me and a few mates were drinving around in a 2001 BMW 320i and came to a set of traffic lights. we were up against a 98 lancer, a normal lancer with mags a spoiler. we asked the guy what gearbox he was running (something you usually wouldnt do but we did anyways) we were both auto's. strangly enough, the lancer pulled away from us. and now ill wait for someone to disagree with me and say how it isnt possible.

Mazda 3s suck. THey're little bombs that everybody loves, but where's the culture? Where's the cult?
That's why I love Ford. Because the cult continues, and I have the opportunity to be part of it. |

When you pick apart a Mazda 3 you'll find... A Ford 2.0 Duratec engine from the Focus or a Ford 2.3 Duratec engine in the SP23, and a Turbo version of that 2.3 Duratec in the MPS. A Ford manual or automatic transmission, Ford Focus chassis, Ford Focus brakes, they even share the same size tyres. The car is a Ford Focus. Oh and... talk about thread mining :yeees:

It's all about the gearing...
The 4spd autos in the non-XR falcons are mediocre. The only way an EF could be a manual mazda 3 is if it were exceed the legal limit. I raced a '99 Merc E240 (my dad) in my '02 BA and we were pretty much lineball to 80 and then I caned it. So unless I exceed the speed limit of 80 then my falc isn't much faster at all. Reason: BA falc - diff ratio 3.23/extremely tall 1st gear. Merc E240 - diff ratio - 3.67 - 5spd auto |

I have a SP23 and they are quick enough...In stock form with a good driver low 15s are possible. In the US they are getting low 14s with bolt ons. I easily stay neck to neck with my old man's XR6 and then kill him through the twisties : On a EuroFord cruise we compared the new focus with my 3 and there are lots a similarities down to crease lines, doors, etc there are so many its not funny.
