Anyone could see this coming as soon as the news items started to appear some years back about how many people were taking advantage of government subsidies and changing thier cars to gas...they weren't going to let such a revenue stream go to waste, especially when they export LPG for cents a liter to overseas customers...

Same with that ethanol crap...wait and see how popular it is when the massive subsidies are removed and the true cost of producing that energy-negative fuel is realised at the pump...

Ummm... It's LNG (i.e. liquefied natural gas a.k.a. liquid methane) that we export for cents a litre, not LPG.

A little OT, but no idea. However, I'm very much looking forward to seeing Westport Innovations' direct-injection natural gas technology. Also, anyone for liquid-phase methane injection?

anything to raise extra dollars......... (inserted sarcasm)
I know the subject is on petrol. but being an added tax are we alowed to chat about it?

Expensive enough to ride in a taxi as it is! for a paying passenger let alone someone trying to make a living driving them..
Sydney city to my house in Colyton is $110. and thats at a 10% discount.

To reduce your confusion.

Talking about tax or laws etc. is not a problem. Reference to political parties or individuals is.

And the cycle happens again. I've seen this cycle many times over many years - people will complain that LPG just isn't worth it, APA will go in to liquidation AGAIN, but before too long petrol will get close to $2/litre and you just watch all the punters complaining about how long it takes to get a conversion.

If you ain't in LPG in the bad times, you don't deserve it in the good times IMO.
I bought my car pre-rebate FYI.

Meh, I'm guessing that the cabs will pass the costs onto to fares.

'The cabs' don't get the choice. The fare price (in QLD at least) is set by the government (department of transport) after a submission of figures from the dispatch companies largely surrounding their own costs to run their in-house cars.
So 100% of drivers and 90% of taxi operators just simply have to accept the fare rates, no matter what.

Oh, quite so. But fuelling costs are only account for about 11% of the metered fare, and this increase will only account for a 4% jump of that 11% portion - so if all other costs of running a cab stay the same, fares should, by rights, jump by less than one cent per kilometre.

Not quite sure what the cost of LPG is down south but here in Darwin we pay $1.50c / litre for 91 ron and about 90 - 95 c / litre for LPG

Exactly.

I really can't see this having a major negative impact on the introduction of EcoLPI.
What does concern me is the recommendations in the Henry Comission which was
to equalise the fuel excise on LPG, petrol and Diesel but I wonder if that would be
modified to a carbon producing excise, that kind of thing must surely be on the cards...

Anyone who does their sums rather than listening to populist hype would work out that the excise on LPG, even in its fullest form in 5 years time, is still very, very worthwhile. As it stands, LPG would need to reach a dollar a litre before it becomes no longer a money saving exercise for the majority of gas falcon owners.

Awesome. Bus fleets will be hit hard by the excise on CNG, considering that a typical 12.5m CNG-fuelled bus uses between 60-70m³/100km.

did someone mention FLEETS ? many companies are suddenly withdrawing operating leases and upping the base salaries . ( i wonder why)
and novated leases well i would like to see the % drop on these since may this year .
me smells a RAT . I do believe that fuel excises will equalise in this country , as we appear to be living in the best country in the world ,as i'm told by many , our leaders arent going to have us get anything cheap .

That document was prepared in 2004, much has changed since that time
and the Henry Tax Review has recommended equalization of fuel excise,
now whether the government follows through or not is yet to be seen...

I think the greens will be pushing for further excise increases on fuels as
witnessed by the the government new tax on carbon and not meaning to
bring politics into this but I suspect more tax and excises are on the cards...

Petrol changes 20 cents per litre in 5 days ...... LPG is changing 12 cents per litre in 1,100 days ......

Will promise you that the % increase of petrol will outstrip LPG over the next few years. Never happy with increases in taxes but to fill the LTD costs up to $32.00 ..... it will now be around $35.00 a week. 8 cents off takes it under $30.00 ..... no complaints from me until I have to fill the FG with Premium at $100.00 a pop!

jpd80, the henry review was one of those 'good idea in theory, doesn't really work in practice' in a number of scenarios (mainly due to an unfair distribution of taxation, either less revenue for the govt or more expense for small business) and is one of the many reasons why very, very little of it has been and will be implemented. Do you have govt legislation that defines these significant changes you speak of?

Well until the MP's in Govco are made to pay for their own fuel and expenses like normal people, nothing is every going to change. It's unfortunate, but it's reality.

It's ridiculous that LPG even got taxed in the first place considering how much more 'greener' it is compared to petrol and diesel. But hey, they gotta get more money out of the people somehow.

At least it's still cheaper than running a car on 91 octane unleaded petrol & diesel (for now) and it's definitely way cheaper than premium unleaded.

But people in this country will never rise up against anything anyway. So nothing would ever be done. They just sit there and put up with it as usual. Other countries must be more passionate.

The taxi industry has known about the tax for a long time and should have already been prepared. Just depends on how much fare gouging they intend to do. I guess only time will tell.
