The problem for older people is very complex as they degenerate at different rates but there still is the issue that they are the biggest menace, their knowledge of laws is outdated and their knowledge of cars is outdated (some like my grandad still double declutches every gear change). The complexity is that some (like p platers) are perfectly good drivers but the advantage older people have is political power. Australia is an ageing population so older people are well represented and get angry easy and can actually be bothered writing letters to the editor. I should also point out that a lot of the p platers you are swearing at aren't neccesarily 18-25. I am actually suprised at the number of p platers in their 30's and 40's on the road and not to mention the menace of p plater Asians. Back to the point of the article wholeheartedly. I learnt to drive fanging Datsuns and Falcons around an abandoned quarry as did my missus and any mates I brang round. And of all the people in my year who learnt to drive at my quarry or on their own bush tracks not a single one has crashed and I'm talking all p platers, all going on 2 years plus with licence and all driving modified rear wheel drive cars such as VL Turbo, RX7, XR6 Ute, XR8 Ute, VS SS, VT Supercharged and all fanging down the most windy dodgy goatracks. Oh and has anyone else come across "hoon" mums in Territory's? they can fly and are good to sit behind if you wanna get somewhere in a hurry! |

All I have to say for MO and anyone else who has that view is what exactly can you expect? To quote the victorian learners book "driving is a complex task" and two years for learning is enough to get some experience but realistically nothing can prepare you for every situation. Driving is not learnt overnight or in a few lessons, it changes with age im 20 now and I can drive better then when I was learning how to drive (before I had my licence) but I will never stop learning like everyone on the road.
And yes they do only really teach you mostly how to pass the test What young people are saying about the old is for those that have lost confidence in driving and it does happen. Maybe everyone should be tested every 5-10 years to make sure they still know the rules (they can change) and if there still competent in driving......... |

yeah the professor made a good point but like the government etc is going to listen to him...
ill give him 1000000000000000 points for trying tho.. but dead set i know alot of people as myself who enjoy doing the illegal stuff in the street, going to big backstreets, industrial places and frying tyres, drifting corners, doing tandom burnouts, drags etc and none of us have ver had a accident that has related to bad injury or death or hurting others.. maybe the car gets a litle bit of a dent gutter the wheel but tahts the risk... ill bet $10000 that my group of amtes are better drivers then alot of older people etc out their, and im saying this with confidence. if it was wet and ur car kicked out sidewayzz will you be able to controll it. people who "HOON" majority of their time are sued to it so it becomes second nature. i know for isntance my mum has no idea how to controll a vehicle when sidewayz thats y she doesnt drive nemore because she is scared lol.. neways you probably think im just an 18 eyar old who thinks about burnouts and hi-powerd vehicles etc. but u gotta look at it in alot of ways. if you learn on cars and little things like excels etc, when u get off them cars u ahve a bigger chance of wrapping yourself around a poll. if u enjoy the culture and like your burnouts etc you not going to do it in peak traffic coz everybody i know that is what use call "HOONS" do it at respectable places and not during peak traffic times.. newayss tahts my 2c...sorry for beeing a winger kid lol

I know the Driving laws as well as any 17-20y/o , I've taught my Daughters "How to Drive" (not just get their licence) in the last 3 years , I went through the book with them numerous times , I also taught them car control , emergency stops on "Wet Tar roads , Dry & Wet gravel roads , cornering smoothly & general Defensive Driving , then took them both to a Driving School to get the "finer points" , One lesson each & driving instructor said they were "more than ready" . The Good Stuff .. The good "Professor" has gut's for most of what he said , I agree for more Legal Skidpans , Strips & Tracks , been there done that , Raced for 12 years with a Car Club doing Lap-Dashes Club Sprints - Hillclimbs , should be more of it . Man , what a BUZZ . Tiapan , these are the places to get going . Nearly ALL racetracks have street car day's , take advantage of it while the tracks are still there . In Sydney they closed down Amaroo Park , Oran Park nearly got closed down , Westmead speedway got closed down , so make use of a safe and purpose built place "While You Can". I love speed as much as any 20+y/o , nothing like an old 192 screaming at 8,000 rev's ( the power band in my racecar is 3,000 - 8,500 rev's) BUT in the right place Industrial estates would be great too , as long as there were a few safety fences and "Insurance" , That I would agree with ... xygthop3 , Mmmm wonder why your mum is too scared to drive anymore ? Geesh , Glad I'm only going to post here ONCE . I've said my bit .
