Guys, if you don’t know the phone number let it go through to voice mail. If it’s important, who ever rang will leave a message. 99% of the time they don’t,. |

Stuff leaving a voice mail. If someone doesn’t answer I send a text telling them who I am and why I rang But I answer all calls. Turned of voice mail so I don’t get messages from the old dudes at work saying ‘it’s me glen. Call me back’. Yes glen I saw your name next to missed call |

I have both mobile and home phone and I do not bother answering any unlisted numbers, if callers are legit they will leave message and in the last five years I think I have had only 3 scammers leave a message.

Had the ATO ring me once, I had never had the ATO ring me before, Indian sounding woman wanted me to verify myself ( phone number, full name, address and DOB ), gave her a mouth full told her she was a scamming dog, called her every name under the sun, only to get home and have a message on my My Gov account telling me to contact them.
When I rang to find out what they wanted, I told the person on the other end to apologise to her for me if they knew who she was, they were pretty good about it and had a bit of a chuckle, they cop it all the time they reckon as the scammers make it hard to differentiate from the real ATO. |

A couple of months back, when my father suffered a fatal injury (but I was not yet aware of this), I had a number of calls from private numbers - which I ignored, and they did not leave voice messages. In the end, I answered one.
Turned out to be the ER doctor desperately trying to reach me. They obviously have - perhaps from experience or policy - a disinclination to leave confronting or distressing messages. |

I had one just yesterday, an sms about a parcel being returned to sender followed by a link. Incidentally it arrived minutes after posting a new gumtree ad, its getting pretty dodgy using gumtree nowadays.
If I don't know the number I usually check it first. Plenty of info here. https://www.numberlookup.com.au/

My uncle was called by a scammer.
Told him his PC was infected and wanted to take control of his computer. Uncle allowed him and was then told I fee of $10 was required to clean the virus out. He paid and then was told its worse than thought and they now need $320. He agreed to pay after confirming he would be paid back once the virus was gone. Of course this was all a scam, they took his money and left his PC buggered. His bank sorted him out and replaced the money he was scammed out of but ended up needing a new computer. So out of pocket by about a thousand dollars. I don't feel sorry for him. I did the first time. And the 2nd time he let a stranger on the phone take control of his computer I still felt bad for him. But geez, how many lessons do you need? I give up, if you haven't learnt by now, you never will. His bank has been incredibly nice to him, but you would imagine there's a point where they stop being nice. |

They use private numbers so you can't ring them back.

Hi Guy's
way back on 2009 on christmas eve i went to the bank to get some money out to get xmas presents' I had only $500 dollars left in my account after scammers took out $2,000 from my account. I don't understand how they got my pin number as i am usually very carefull and that buggered up my xmas that year. I need in the end i did get my money back from the bank and of course got a new card and changed my pin number. These scammer's don't give up. A few week's ago i was getting phone calls saying "it was the Taxation Department. then it was The Police with over due fine's. I said before " the older people are at risk more so because some of them are taken in by theses phone calls". The scammer's don't give a rats who they hurt, who hey ripe off, as long as they get what there after. |

The imagination of the scammers is incredible. The latest message is about "your photos have been uploaded , there is an issue etc ". No doubt they want the recipient to log into their scam site BUT I have never used facebook which I understand is where users have photos stored.

i know many people who have received calls from numbers very close to their own: spoofed
I've personally had calls from scammers doing the arrest warrant thing. They tell you that the local police or AFP will be calling very shortly and ask you to look up the number. A minute later you receive a call showing that number. Number spoofing is just too easy to do. Best YouTube videos playing with scammers are by Kitboga or Jim Browning. Both are legends who are even famous in the scammer community. |

I love scammers that call. If I'm bored or free to talk I just put it on speaker and blab away till they give up.
One guy called me back 4 or 5 times, each call was 30-60 minutes. I spoke to 3 supervisors, all nice people trying to help me with my PC problems. The crap they put up with from my end to earn a buck was mind boggling. Clearly they had more free time to burn than me. I recorded the calls. One day I'll fish them out and put then online for a laugh. There is method to my madness - the more time they waste with me the less time they have with others.

I did something similar. When they asked for a residential address I gave them the address of the local area command.

Most of them bank with the big 4 banks, use Telstra for phone and NRMA for insurance. They also don't want to get in trouble with the law or the ATO. So scammers prey on these people and rip off millions each year. And that really pi55es me off. Everything is computerised now. Every fake number must go some sort of electronic server, every transaction must flow through electronic means. Why can't they do more to stop these mongrels? I know that Telstra block several thousand calls each month from scammers but how do they keep re-hashing new ones that appear to be local landline numbers or mobile numbers? As soon as a number is reported it should be instantly blocked. Bit like people getting prank calls. How is that resolved? Change your number. When I'm sure a 1 minute phone call would have found the person making the call.... Scammers and rip off artists prosper in an environment that allows them to.

I had a call today, which I shouldn't have answered as it was from an 02 Sydney area code and no one would be ringing me from Sydney.
It was a recorded message, serious-sounding female voice (synthesised?) from Border Force or whatever ... there'a a package from O/S for me, containing illicit substances ... I hung up. |

Wednesday's Age newspaper and I also saw it on TV: Sanjay Joseph bought a property in Sydney ... received an email from what looked like his conveyancer asking him to transfer $100K to complete purchase ... talking to conveyancer a few days later, they hadn't asked for the $$$ ... conveyancing system used by the seller had been hacked ... $$$ had gone into UBank, owned by NAB ... seems the $$$ was distributed to Westpac and neobank 86 400 (?) accounts and withdrawn from Malaysian ATMs. Eventually, lawyers helped him to recover the $$$ through insurers. Police, NAB, Aust. Financial Complaints Authority couldn't/wouldn't help him.
