I've sort of gotten used to it

The one that's giving me trouble coming to grips with ATM is the Malibu

This is how I know a Chevy Malibu

I know there's been plenty of models since the 68 but thats how I remember the name plate

Or is it just me... are Australians just Pseudo yanks so we don't care about our car names?

LEXUS = luxury export to the US...

The trend is to drop names and go with letters and numbers (Tucsons and Santa Fe's became 'i' whatever's as one example) but what other yank names can you think of that were or are clearly aimed at the US market and dumped on us?
Santa Fe's are still called Santa Fe's in Australia too

Ford Aust butchered the vehicle known as falcon years ago with names like TS50 ,TE50 , G6E ,GTE ,GTP AND G6 just to name a few of the modern slaughter they committed , and there was GXL ESP etc .By stating this do I ridicule any of these fine cars , they all simply deserved better names and history has been unkind to them . Actually FORD Aust marketing have IMO

No, Yank car names don't give me the *****, as it were. I don't care where the name comes from, so long as it sounds good. That being said, I do generally have a preference for European names than American ones, just as I have a preference for European Fords over American ones.

Subaru renamed their legacy to liberty in Australia only.

Magna was Australian only, anywhere else its diamanté.

Toyota used to have a Lexcen (re-badged crumbledoor, I know).

Might be time for the Ford 'Warney'
The Holden 'Shazza'

Better than the Skoda Superb and the Sssssssangyong Chairman.

Liberty only happened because the RSL had issues with the word Legacy.

Hyundai tried to introduce its world car Elantra, but at the time it was deemed too close to Mitsubishi Magna Elante (trademark), called Lantra for the AU market - a few years down the line this is no longer a problem, so Elantra it is.

Nowadays, with the world getting smaller, the same car should be badged the same everywhere, this increases the reach of your branding, rather than watering it down with multiple names.

I think what the thread starter is more referring to well known American location names as car names.

Names like Falcon or mustang don't really count as one is a bird and the other a horse. Whereas as Colorado and Malibu are very American.

I kinda get where the OP is coming from....Colorado seems like a silly name in Oz, but then again Rodeo wasnt much better. As for Malibu.....doesnt get more yankee than that. On the other hand, would anyone have gotten excited for a brand new Epica?

Cool Re: Do cars with yanks names give anyone else the *****?

Naming the Holden Canbra
well that reminds me back in 1965 just before decimal currency came out in Feb 66 our PM Bob Menzies wanted to call the new 10 shilling note a Royal
but the rest of the government saw the light and called it the Dollar
good idea looking at car names
what about Leyland P76 didnt even have a name just a number
John

We're likely to get Australia before either of those other two!

Chrysler used to make an Imperial, you know.

What about the Miami Engine?

Also Known as Coyote in the US.

Neither is relevant to autstraliana, but either one is a cool name.

Who cares?

Nissan's Maxima was Cefiro in South East Asia and then with the current body shape was changed to Teana.
